A Microsoft está apostando alto no Windows ARM mais uma vez, mas, desta vez, com um novo e sofisticado processador Snapdragon da Qualcomm, alimentado por IA. Embora seja muito bom em alguns aspectos, o novo chip tem problemas para acompanhar as novidades da Intel, AMD e Apple em algumas áreas importantes.

O HP EliteBook Ultra G1p 14 foi um dos muitos modelos de laptop revelados no evento Surface da Microsoft no mês passado em Seattle. O anúncio foi particularmente importante, pois marcaria o início da terceira tentativa da empresa de levar o Windows para plataformas ARM. Desta vez, no entanto, o fabricante do Windows tem o apoio do processador Snapdragon da Qualcomm pronto para IA e de grandes fabricantes como HP, Dell, Lenovo e Asus para impulsionar a plataforma.

Nossa unidade de análise de hoje é o EliteBook Ultra G1p 14 voltado para negócios, com o SoC Snapdragon X Elite X1E-78-100, 16 GB de RAM LPDDR5x-8400 soldada e SSD de 512 GB por US$ 1.700 no varejo. Não há outras SKUs disponíveis no momento em que este artigo foi escrito. Um modelo da HP relacionado, mas separado, chamado OmniBook X 14, vem com especificações muito semelhantes por US$ 500 a menos em um design mais voltado para o consumidor.

Estojo - Fabricado de forma responsável com alumínio e plástico reciclados

O EliteBook Ultra G1q 14 pode ter um novo e sofisticado processador ARM, mas sua estrutura parece ter sido fortemente inspirada no Dragonfly Pro. Tudo, desde a cor do chassi, o layout do teclado, o design da dobradiça e os toques visuais lembram mais a série Dragonfly de 14 polegadas do que o EliteBook 1040 de 14 polegadas. Isso significa que a máquina da Qualcomm parece igualmente premium, apesar do design superleve e fino.

Infelizmente, as pequenas dobradiças são o aspecto mais fraco de um chassi rígido. Também observamos isso em nossa análise do Dragonfly Pro e é um pouco decepcionante ver o mesmo problema no EliteBook Ultra G1q 14. A rigidez da dobradiça simplesmente não é muito forte em ângulos mais amplos e a tampa tende a balançar bastante ao ajustar os ângulos. Temos uma sensação melhor de longevidade com as dobradiças mais rígidas do Dell Latitude 9450 em comparação.

O tamanho e o peso são os destaques do EliteBook Ultra G1q 14, pois o modelo é visivelmente mais fino e mais leve do que muitos de seus concorrentes, incluindo o Latitude 9450 2 em 1, XPS 14 9440ou o MacBook Pro 14. No entanto, os usuários podem ficar ainda mais leves optando pelo ThinkPad X1 Carbon G12 ou LG Gram 14 e, portanto, nossa máquina baseada na Qualcomm não é necessariamente a mais leve que existe.

Conectividade

O sistema inclui uma porta USB-A, enquanto a maioria dos outros subnotebooks de 14 polegadas não a oferece, incluindo até mesmo a própria série Dragonfly da HP. Felizmente, o USB4 é suportado para compatibilidade com uma variedade maior de estações de acoplamento e monitores.

Manutenção

O painel inferior é fixado por apenas quatro parafusos Torx para uma manutenção relativamente fácil. No entanto, a capacidade de atualização é limitada ao slot SSD M.2 2280 PCIe4 e ao módulo M.2 WLAN, pois a RAM é soldada. O design de resfriamento de ventilador único é semelhante à maioria dos outros modelos EliteBook, como o EliteBook 845, enquanto os modelos Dragonfly normalmente utilizam designs de ventilador duplo.

Não há extras na caixa de varejo além do adaptador CA e da documentação. Teria sido bom ver uma capa protetora, considerando o preço pedido pelo modelo.

A garantia de três anos do fabricante é padrão, juntamente com um ano de proteção do software HP Wolf Security Pro. A garantia básica mais longa é um diferencial importante entre o OmniBook X 14, voltado para o consumidor, e o EliteBook Ultra G1q 14, voltado para a empresa.

Teclado

O layout do teclado é mais parecido com o do Dragonfly Pro do que com o do EliteBook 845 especialmente em termos de tamanho e fonte das teclas. O deslocamento parece muito superficial, incluindo as teclas Espaço e Enter, que poderiam ter se beneficiado de um feedback mais forte.

Todas as teclas e símbolos ficam iluminados quando a luz de fundo está ativa.

Touchpad

A área da superfície é ligeiramente maior do que a do Dragonfly Pro (12,5 x 8 cm vs. 12,0 x 8 cm) para ser ainda mais espaçosa e permitir entradas multitoque confortáveis. A tração é suave, com apenas um pouco de aderência ao deslizar em velocidades mais lentas para maior precisão. O feedback ao pressionar a superfície também é mais nítido, mais firme e mais alto do que nas séries XPS ou Lenovo IdeaPad. Esse é um dos clickpads mais satisfatórios e confiáveis disponíveis, pelo menos se não considerarmos os trackpads com botões dedicados.

Tela - IPS padrão de 60 Hz

Por mais especial que a CPU possa ser, a tela sensível ao toque é bastante comum. O painel IPS oferece cores sRGB completas, resolução sub QHD e tempos de resposta preto-branco e cinza-cinza mais rápidos do que o painel de 14 polegadas do Dragonfly Pro. Por outro lado, ele não possui recursos encontrados em painéis mais avançados, como suporte a HDR, taxas de atualização mais altas e Windows VRR.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

To dim the screen, some notebooks will simply cycle the backlight on and off in rapid succession - a method called Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) . This cycling frequency should ideally be undetectable to the human eye. If said frequency is too low, users with sensitive eyes may experience strain or headaches or even notice the flickering altogether.

In comparison: 53 % of all tested devices do not use PWM to dim the display. If PWM was detected, an average of 8706 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 343500) Hz was measured.

O brilho máximo de 350 a 400 nits é mais fraco do que o do Macbook Pro 14 ou do EliteBook 830, onde os níveis de brilho podem chegar a 600 nits ou 1000 nits, respectivamente. Embora ~350 nits seja ótimo para ambientes internos, a iluminação e as condições externas sobrecarregarão a tela do EliteBook Ultra.

Desempenho - Bom desde o início, mas não o suficiente

Condições de teste

Definimos o Windows para o modo Desempenho antes de executar os benchmarks abaixo. Muitos dos benchmarks precisam ser emulados para serem executados, inclusive o 3DMark, o que pode dificultar as comparações diretas com os chips da Intel ou da AMD.

Processador

O desempenho bruto de vários núcleos está no mesmo nível dos concorrentes Core Ultra 7 165U na melhor das hipóteses, ficando cerca de 15 a 20 por cento atrás do Ryzen 7 7840U ou 8840U. Os resultados se tornam ainda piores para operações de núcleo único, em que nosso Snapdragon X Elite X1E-78-100 pode ser até 35 a 40 por cento mais lento do que as alternativas da Intel e da AMD mencionadas anteriormente. Resultados semelhantes podem ser encontrados ao comparar o chip da Qualcomm com o Apple M2 ou mais recente.

O desempenho cai ao longo do tempo quando é estressado, pois as altas taxas de clock não são sustentáveis por longos períodos. Embora isso não seja incomum, a queda no desempenho é mais acentuada quando comparada a muitas alternativas Core-U ou Ryzen-U. Ao executar o CineBench R15 xT em um loop, por exemplo, a pontuação inicial de 2175 pontos cairia 27% após seis loops, em comparação com apenas 12% no Dragonfly Pro. Suspeitamos que isso se deva à menor solução de resfriamento do design do EliteBook Ultra G1q, já que o maior Vivobook S 15 OLED maior, com a mesma CPU Qualcomm, consegue manter consistentemente pontuações mais altas em condições de teste semelhantes.

Desempenho do sistema

Naturalmente, vários dos nossos aplicativos de benchmark usuais não seriam executados em um ambiente ARM, o que é de se esperar:

  1. Far Cry 5: Falha ao iniciar
  2. X-Plane: Somente configurações baixas; falha nas configurações médias e altas
  3. Baldur's Gate 3: falha ao iniciar no modo DX12
  4. HWiNFO64: Versão ARM em breve
  5. i1Profiler: Falha ao reconhecer o colorímetro
  6. LatencyMon: Nenhuma versão ARM
  7. 3DMark06: Erro SysInfo; pode ser contornado
  8. Geekbench 6.2: Falha ao iniciar

Vale a pena mencionar que a maioria dos aplicativos acima é para fins de benchmarking que a maioria dos compradores não executará. Os aplicativos de produtividade do dia a dia, como navegadores, reprodutores de vídeo e Microsoft Office, são executados sem problemas.

O PCMark 10 Standard também é incompatível com ARM e, por isso, executamos o PCMark 10 Applications. Nossas pontuações na tabela acima seriam mais altas do que as registradas no Latitude 7350 equipado com o Core Ultra 5 135U para sugerir que a máquina da Qualcomm é mais comparável à série Core Ultra 7 do que a uma SKU de baixo custo quando se trata de aplicativos do dia a dia.

Curiosamente, as pontuações do WebXPRT e do Kraken seriam muito mais baixas em nosso sistema HP do que em nosso sistema Asus, apesar de repetirmos os testes.

Isso significa que as mais recentes GPUs integradas da Intel e da AMD podem ser de 50% a 80% mais rápidas do que a solução da Qualcomm em termos de potência gráfica bruta.

Aparentemente, não há déficit de desempenho quando se executa no modo Balanced em vez do modo Performance, como mostra a tabela de resultados do site Fire Strike acima. Entretanto, a execução com a energia da bateria reduz significativamente o desempenho do processador, ao contrário da maioria dos subnotebooks com Core-U ou Ryzen-U, em que déficits de desempenho menores são mais comuns. O Lenovo ThinkBook 14 2 em 1 G4por exemplo, não apresentaria nenhum déficit entre os modos Desempenho e Bateria. Também não observamos grandes quedas de desempenho ao executar o Asus VivoBook com tecnologia ARM com a energia da bateria. Desempenho em jogos

Os usuários interessados em um PC Windows com ARM para fins de jogos não estão procurando o lugar certo, pois esse chip Snapdragon não foi projetado para jogadores. Dito isso, a Qualcomm se gabou notoriamente da capacidade de executar o Baldur's Gate 3 a 1080p e 30 FPS, o que imediatamente chamou a atenção da maioria dos analistas. No entanto, sem a ajuda do FSR, só conseguimos atingir uma média de 23 FPS e 35 FPS nas configurações 1080p Low e 720p Low, respectivamente. O desempenho em outros jogos seria igualmente decepcionante, com resultados muito mais lentos do que o Arc 8 ou a Radeon 680M da concorrência, conforme previsto pelos resultados sintéticos do 3DMark acima.

Talvez o pior e mais perceptível problema no momento seja o ritmo irregular dos quadros ou o salto de quadros que experimentamos na maioria dos jogos testados. Mesmo que as taxas médias de quadros sejam decentes, como em Tiny Tina's Wonderlands, os saltos de quadros ocorrem com muito mais frequência do que em uma alternativa da Intel ou da AMD, a ponto de causar distração. Definitivamente, a Qualcomm tem um longo caminho a percorrer antes que seus drivers se tornem tão maduros quanto os da concorrência.

O ruído do ventilador é mais silencioso do que a maioria dos outros subnotebooks de 14 polegadas. O ventilador interno tende a se estabilizar em apenas 25 dB(A) ao navegar na Web ou fazer streaming de vídeo contra um fundo silencioso de 23,4 dB(A) para ser essencialmente inaudível durante o uso. Na pior das hipóteses, o sistema fica um pouco abaixo de 35 dB(A) ao jogar ou executar tarefas muito exigentes, o que ainda é visivelmente mais silencioso do que a maioria das alternativas tradicionais, como o MacBook Pro 14 ou o ThinkPad X1 Carbon G12.

Temperatura

A metade esquerda do sistema é sempre mais quente do que a direita devido à solução de resfriamento assimétrica. O ponto de aquecimento próximo às teclas WASD pode chegar a mais de 40 °C quando pressionado, em comparação com o lado direito do teclado, que pode ser quase 10 °C mais frio. As diferenças de temperatura entre as duas metades do chassi são perceptíveis durante o uso, mas nunca desconfortáveis.

As temperaturas médias da superfície são bem próximas das que registramos no Dragonfly Pro, sugerindo que o EliteBook Ultra G1q não funciona mais frio ou mais quente, apesar das diferenças significativas entre as placas-mãe.

Se o senhor quiser convencer um leigo a escolher o Windows on ARM em vez das alternativas tradicionais do Apple ou de outros, ele terá que se destacar em várias categorias, incluindo desempenho, preço, duração da bateria e formato. Vamos dar uma olhada em cada uma delas:

Desempenho. O desempenho é comparável ao do Core Ultra 7 155U/165U, na melhor das hipóteses, e é tão lento quanto o do antigo Core i7-1165G7, na pior, principalmente quando se trata de operações de núcleo único. O desempenho gráfico também não é satisfatório quando comparado com as mais recentes soluções integradas Arc e Radeon da Intel e da AMD, respectivamente.

Preço. Por US$ 1.700, o HP EliteBook Ultra G1q 14 custa quase o mesmo que outros subnotebooks Core Ultra 7 voltados para empresas, como o Dell Latitude 7350 ou Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon.

Duração da bateria. Os tempos de execução são excelentes e mais longos do que a maioria dos subnotebooks da Intel ou da AMD devido ao alto desempenho por watt. No entanto, estão disponíveis alternativas da Intel e da AMD com resultados comparáveis, incluindo o 2023 Dragonfly Pro ou o Dell Latitude 9450 2 em 1.

Fator de forma. O tamanho pequeno, o peso portátil e o ruído silencioso do ventilador são os destaques da máquina HP Qualcomm. Entretanto, modelos como o LG Gram 14, Samsung Galaxy Book4 Proou o ThinkPad X1 Carbon G12 podem ser menores ou até mais leves.

O desafio do EliteBook Ultra G1q 14 não é que ele seja uma máquina ruim, mas que a concorrência atual entre as máquinas Intel/AMD é extremamente acirrada. Os compradores já têm um punhado de excelentes subnotebooks para escolher (inclusive do próprio portfólio da HP) que podem igualar ou exceder os recursos e as capacidades do EliteBook Ultra G1q 14, especialmente quando se trata de compatibilidade. Portanto, é mais difícil recomendar o EliteBook Ultra G1q 14 do que muitas das alternativas mencionadas acima para a grande maioria dos usuários.

O EliteBook Ultra G1q 14 é um bom começo para a Qualcomm, mas ela precisará fazer muito mais, já que as últimas novidades da Intel e da AMD estão um passo à frente pelo mesmo preço.

Muitas das deficiências do EliteBook Ultra G1q 14 poderiam ter sido perdoadas se ele tivesse sido lançado por um preço inicial muito mais baixo do que a concorrência. Infelizmente, ele custa praticamente o mesmo preço e não oferece grandes vantagens em termos de desempenho ou recursos. É um ótimo começo, mas a Qualcomm e os fabricantes de PCs têm um longo caminho a percorrer antes que o Windows sobre ARM possa convencer os usuários a dar o salto.
