Complete Amazon experience. Amazon caught the tablet world by storm when the retailer announced its first multimedia tablet for just $199 USD. Is the performance and hardware reflective of the budget price? or is the Kindle Fire greater than the sum of its parts?

The Fire has thinner borders around the screen than the Fire HD, and looks less clunky and old fashioned. It still won't win any style awards, and it's not especially light at 400g - the same weight as the Fire HD, give or take. The Fire measures 189 x 120 x 11.5mm, making it 17mm shorter and a fraction thicker. Its design is different to the Fire HD in that it's very similar to a traditional E-ink Kindle, and designed to be used in portrait mode.

The Kindle Fire HD wasn't the best 7in tablet when it launched in 2012, and even at the new lower price, it can't really compete with newcomers including Tesco's Hudl. The Fire HD locks you into Amazon's world, which still lacks the breadth of choice compared with Google Play.

Although a £129 tablet sounds tempting, the Kindle Fire isn't nearly as good as the Fire HD. It really is a no-brainer to spend the extra £30, since you get an extra 8GB of storage, a higher-resolution screen, better speakers, volume buttons, an HDMI output and twin antennae for the Wi-Fi radio (and Wi-Fi also works on 5GHz, which means it's much faster if you own a compatible router). Bear in mind that Google's Nexus 7 is more versatile than both Kindles and doesn't lock you into buying content from Amazon.

Overall it looks as if the Nexus tablet has got its main competition licked, although like every new player in this market it will struggle to take on Apple's iPad. Perhaps it's just down to Microsoft and its Surface tablets to challenge the Cupertino giant.

When reviewing the Amazon Kindle Fire we found ourselves constantly revisiting the price point and, with that firmly in mind, were probably willing to cut it more slack than we might have had it cost the same as the Motorola Xoom, or Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1.

For Rs 14,000, the tab offers a good capacitive touchscreen, a long battery life, and decent multimedia options. However, the lack of an app store and Cloud support (for India) is a letdown. Moreover the sparse connectivity options also weakens the device's case as a good tablet. However, if you are looking for a budget tablet, the Kindle Fire is definitely is a better option than Reliance 3G Tab and the Spice Tab Mi-720.

Unless you have someone begging you for a tablet for the holidays, we suggest holding-off until after the new year, and waiting for Amazon's next tablet offering. Purchasing the Fire will make you an early adopter, rushing to buy a tablet from a company that is new to this game. Plus, with quad-core tablets like the Asus Transformer Prime now and/or soon hitting the market, you might be thankful that you waited.

The Kindle Fire is a nice-looking tablet, and, at 200 bucks, Amazon is going to sell a shedload of them. Its flaws are well balanced by the low price, and it's a logical upgrade if you're already a Kindle owner and you want to buy videos, music and apps from Amazon, not just books.

Overall, the Fire strikes me as a tablet for people who don’t like tablets. It’s for the person who would never think of connecting an external keyboard. It’s for the person who doesn’t see the point of holding up a screen and swiping around to navigate the web when they can plop down in front of a PC. It’s for the person who wouldn’t touch Android gaming with a ten-foot pole. For this user, most of the Fire’s downsides are irrelevant, and it all comes down to watching movies, listening to music and reading books. My only question is - how many consumers fit this niche? I guess we’ll find out.

My out of the box experience with the Kindle Fire was not as good as I had expected. Sure, the very initial setup was a breeze, since it logged in my Amazon account automatically (which it won't do with devices bought at retail stores or ordered from Amazon as gifts), but the user interface somewhat got in my way, and the touchscreen didn't always seem to respond well in my first hour of use. Having to hunt down the missing hardware button functionality for home and volume also took some getting used to. But after a day or so of using it, I'm pretty much settled in. I initially thought I would end up returning the Kindle Fire, but now I think I'm going to keep it. I like its media consumption abilities, and I like the compact form factor.

The Kindle Fire is a device that does exactly what Amazon wanted it to: it is affordable and provides an easy way to consume more content from Amazon. This is definitely not a “killer” for larger and faster tablets, but at the very basic level, it is a good multimedia player with a store access, and it is basically the best mobile interface to Amazon.com.

Amazon have really struck gold with the Kindle Fire. They have managed to produce a high quality tablet at a price that many thought impossible. Sure, the Fire isn’t as feature packed as the iPad, lacking a camera and other features such as GPS, but when you compare $199 to $500+ it really is quite remarkable just what you get for your money.

The Amazon Kindle Fire makes trade-offs to achieve a $200 price. The Kindle Fire is one of a kind, at least this week. It's the first affordable, easy-to-use general-purpose tablet. It doesn't replace the Apple iPad: It complements the iPad, which is bigger, more powerful, more expensive, and has far more apps. While there are other good small tablets out there, most notably the Acer Iconia Tab A100, they're also more expensive and just more fiddly. While geeks have more options with a "generic" Honeycomb tablet, non-geeks get less guidance as to what to do with them.

At the end of the day you have to decide what your needs are and which tablet device might suit you better. Sure, there are a ton of other tablet options out there, but frankly I think it’s going to come down to Apple and Amazon being the big players in the tablet market. If you’re starting to shop for a tablet these are the two to start with when looking. If you need a fully fledged tablet that would allow for video chat, using productivity apps and taking advantage of a vast library of software already available then the iPad is the way to go if you can afford it. If you just want something for being able to browse the web or watch movies on the go, so long as you know you’ll have access to wi-fi where you plan to use it, the Amazon Kindle Fire is a good fit.

It's a tough choice. On one hand, the Kindle is perfect for those on a budget as it's cheap, has a long battery life and plenty of content. However, for an extra £25, we're tempted to go with the Sony Reader as it's lighter, has better build quality and touch-screen functionality that makes it so much easier to use.

"Twice the memory, three times the performance, four times the gaming power". Not a bad place to start, but how has Amazon earned the right to that impressive marketing sound bite? Well, both Kindle Fire HDX models sport Qualcomm's mighty quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor (the same silicon powering the beastly LG G2, Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and Sony Xperia Z Ultra), which is clocked in at 2.2GHz: the fastest of any tablet on the market.

Presently, this is the only premium, dual-core 9-inch tablet available in the market at this price. For almost the same price, you can opt for an iPad 2 or the iPad mini, but you will have sacrifice on the display resolution. Or you can opt for an iPad 3 or the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 at a higher price. For enthusiasts, here is a bit of news—the tablet can be rooted and custom Android ROMs installed, but you could void the warranty while doing that. Should you choose the Kindle Fire HD or the Kindle Fire HD 8.9? There are three key factors: price, screen size and weight. The 7in Kindle Fire HD costs £159 for a 16GB device, and £199 for 32GB. Move up to 8.9in and the prices are £229 and £259. For that extra cash you get a bigger screen that has better resolution - so if watching HD movies is your thing it may be worth the outlay. But if you are a bookworm, the 7in device will offer a better, lighter reading experience. And save you some pennies.

It would be easy to criticise the Kindle Fire HD 8.9 for lacking numerous features available on rival tablets, but that would be missing the point. While the likes of Samsung and Sony offer similar digital media services with their tablets, Amazon is the only rival that comes close to matching the sense of calm, security and family-friendliness that's been such a major selling point of the iPad. For some, the Wild West nature of Android is its greatest asset, but for others, quite the opposite. With the Fire HDX, the Kindle acquires the first early pangs of an identity crisis. If it has the form of a full-size productivity device, shouldn’t it try to be one? Naw. It has its own identity and it has a valuable role to play. Apple described the case of the iPhone 5c as not just “plastic,” but “unapologetically plastic.” Amazon should do the same with the Kindle. It’s unapologetically content-driven. They’ve improved the screen and the sound and the OS features to make this the most pleasant device for enjoying other people’s creativity. It’s definitely not the best full-size tablet for sweating through a full day of work. But it might be the best tablet for recovering from one.

Priced from $379 for the WiFi-only model (add $100 if you want LTE support) it’s competitively priced, and it could handle anything we threw at it; Amazon’s roadmap of feature updates like second-screen support will only make it better, particularly if you’re a Prime customer.

If you are heavily invested (intellectually and financially) in Amazon's content ecosystem of books, music, film, magazines and audio books, then the Kindle Fire HDX will deliver a rich experience. If you've spread your content around or don't really want to haul it out of other silos, or are just looking for a handy pocket-sized tablet, then you might find it somewhat claustrophobic.

The Fire HDX is a great tablet with excellent performance and a great screen, but one that suffers from a couple of problematic flaws. The blue light leakage will annoy some people who like to read a lot, while the lack of apps will trip up anyone expecting the choice you get on an iPad or Nexus 7.It's a great choice for undemanding users who will benefit from the closed, safe, easy-to-use ecosystem and the free tech support via the Mayday button.

For the right kind of customer, the Kindle Fire HDX is the perfect tablet. And who is that customer? Someone who doesn't want to much more than consume content on their tablet. If you're a Prime subscriber, or heavily invested in Amazon's ecosystem, the Kindle Fire HDX is a smart purchase. For those who want a little more functionality, reach for a Nexus 7, and for those with deeper pockets, consider an Apple tablet.

The Kindle HDX is a brilliant piece of hardware, of that there is no doubt. It's slick, quick and very easy to use. However, for us, it falls just short of greatness. We'd rather have the open approach and broader selection of features on the Nexus 7 than the faster performance of the HDX, especially since the price is exactly the same.

This is a real Nexus 7 alternative. As long as standing at the cutting edge of new apps isn’t a big priority the HDX has you well and truly covered, from browsing to cloud storage to buying books, music and magazines. Bringing a new, pepped up Fire OS, zinging along on a Snapdragon 800 and with a crisp, dazzling screen, this 7in Kindle Fire is even up there with the iPad Mini for the best hardware we’ve seen on a small tablet. But in a world that already includes the Nexus 7 and iPad Mini it takes something special to standout, and the Kindle Fire HDX certainly does that. That's thanks in no small part to the genius Mayday button, which is probably what every other Android tablet manufacturer is hitting right about now.

The Amazon Kindle Fire HDX is Amazon’s most powerful tablet yet, boasting specs that can match the Google Nexus 7 and the iPad Mini without even breaking a sweat. What it boils down to then is what you’re after. If you like being able to tinker, customise and use your tablet as a portable all-in-one, then Android and the Nexus 7 are probably your best bet. If on the other hand you want the simple life and you want a true media player that will give you an almost inexhaustible supply of books, music and video then the Kindle is the tablet for you.

The Kindle Fire HDX. It wins on the strength of its superior interface and software/content, though it excels in other matters, too. I found myself using the Fire HDX more often than the Nexus 7 to watch movies and to read on the train ride home. Its smaller size and convenient content carousel help guide you to exactly what you’re most likely to use a tablet for, without having to sift through a library of apps or spend hours setting it up. The HDX is also a keen choice for technologically challenged family members, as it offers better out-of-the-box functionality.

The difference between the Kindle Fire and Google's Nexus 7 is really one of philosophy. The Nexus 7 is a blank slate which you can customize to your whims. The Kindle Fire is a cheerful personal shopper. We're PCMag.com, so the Editors' Choice goes to the more flexible Nexus 7. But if configuring and supporting Android 4.3 on the Nexus 7 is a bit too much of a pill to swallow, the Kindle Fire (with its Mayday advisors always just a touch away) will go down as easy as a spoonful of sugar.

The increasing number of very good sub-$200 tablets is making it harder to justify the premium for more expensive devices such as the Amazon Kindle Fire HDX. There’s another shoe waiting to drop: a likely iPad refresh. I don’t expect to see Apple lower the price of the 16GB iPad mini below its current $329. For the life of me, I don’t know what Apple could do to enhance the iPad mini to make me recommend it over the Fire HDX, provided that the person asking my advice had little interest in productivity or gaming. A 7-inch Fire HDX will give you a superior content experience and leave $100 in your pocket—which you can spend on books, music, and movies.

Luckily for Amazon, the potential audience of its customers keeps growing, though. The Kindle Fire HDX ticks the right boxes across the board, in that case: ebooks look great and can be read for longer; movies and TV shows will soon have the clever Second Screen functionality; and Prime subscribers get the benefit of offline playback. It’s fast, portable, and well constructed, and if you’ve bought into the Amazon ecosystem – or are looking for a one-stop-shop in which to set up your digital life, that isn’t Apple – then the Kindle Fire HDX makes a compelling argument to be that shopfront.

The Fire HD feels like a step backwards from the model it replaces: there's no camera, no HDMI output, half the storage and shorter battery life. It's faster, though, and has a slicker operating system which is now child friendly thanks to FreeTime. You're still limited to Amazon's app store which lacks the choice you get with Google Play, but it still makes a great kids' tablet.

However, the plastic chassis and huge screen air gap does remind you that you're buying a very cheap tablet, and the locked-down operating system will be crippling for some users. If you are already an Amazon Prime subscriber and buy your music and eBooks from Amazon, the Kindle Fire HD 6 makes for a great central hub for all your content, but we'd still rather save up for the Tesco Hudl2.

The Fire HD 6 is perfect for someone who has never bought a tablet because they cost too much. Ditto for families that want an extra slate floating around for when the iPad is already taken, or someone looking for a good stocking stuffer for the holidays. And again, it isn't a bad e-reader alternative either.

The Amazon Fire HD 6 is a niche tablet, with a seriously compact screen that makes it almost as small as some smartphones (along it’s a bit of a chunky beast). However, if your priority is affordable portability or you’re just after something your kids can mess around on, there’s plenty of value packed in - assuming you’re an Amazon advocate, of course.

For those looking to get a tablet for very little, it is hard to top the value that the Fire HD 6 has to offer. Sure, it has to compromise on features, particularly storage space on the device and running time but the design offers a great display and build quality for under $100. And those looking to get one for the kids should really consider the $149 kids version simply for the two year worry-free warranty.

Heralding a new age of good budget tablets, the Amazon Fire HD 6 boasts a great mix of features, design and performance for just $99. It is a bit smaller than the $150 ASUS MeMO Pad 7 and $130 Acer Iconia One 7 but offers better battery life and a brighter screen with an easy-to-use interface. All that's good, but it's the detailed parental controls that make the Fire HD 6 a must-have tablet.

For its price point of $140, it’s hard to go wrong with Amazon’s Fire HD 7 – as long as you know what you’re getting into. This is the first Amazon tablet I’ve been able to put some serious time into, and having had owned a bunch of other Android tablets in the past, I’d be fibbing if I said there wasn’t a big learning-curve. One of the most important bullet points buyers need to bear in mind is that Google’s Play Store is not included on Amazon’s tablets. For some, that might not matter, but for me, it’d be a deal-breaker if this was meant to be a primary tablet. But, I’m someone who’s tied into Google’s ecosystem tight.

While it's relatively easy to recommend the HD 6 at £79 or £99, it's significantly harder to like the HD 7 at £119 or £139. For £129, Tesco's larger Hudl 2 is a much better deal, even if you're buying it for your kids.

At £119 for the ad-supported 8GB model (if you don't want adverts then you need to pay an extra £10), the Amazon Fire HD 7 might be affordable but struggles against a Tesco 16GB tablet that's faster, has a higher resolution screen and the full Android experience for just £10 more. Even without ads, the 8GB Amazon model at the same price as the Tesco model pales in comparison. If you would rather keep things simple, it's worth giving Amazon's latest slate a try. There's a sense of Amazon resting on its laurels, but what's worked well before continues to do so now. If only it was a little more affordable given the current competition - but with that in mind the 6-inch Amazon Fire HD 6, priced at £79, is perhaps the better option if you're looking for a bargain.

Sporting a vivid display, a zippy processor and access to a wealth of Amazon content, the Amazon Fire HD 7 is one of the better tablets you can get for under $150. The slate's FreeTime parental controls make it the perfect gadget to share with your little one, and its long battery life allows the whole family to get plenty of use out of the tablet on a single charge.

Fire and Origami. Once again, the fourth generation of the Fire HDX 8.9 is a tablet with great multimedia capabilities. However, the software limitations are still significant. So is it a tablet only for Amazon fans?

As a media and all-round entertainment machine, the Amazon Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 is a solid rival for the iPad Air 2. However, there is a caveat, and that’s the tablet’s deep roots in Amazon’s ecosystem. Prime members will delight in the Instant Video integration while anyone with a sizeable Kindle library can access all of their books with a tap, but anyone less convinced should maybe look elsewhere.

Good things about the new HDX 8.9: great screen, excellent battery life, quick-as-blazes processor and superb graphics. The speakers are very good too. Bad things: no Google apps, no Google Play Store, no storage expansion and Fire OS, even in its latest iteration, looks a wee bit dated compared with stock Android even if it is piss-easy to use. Impressive the hardware aside, as with the Fire Phone the more in bed you are with Amazon as a content provider the more you’ll get on with, and out of, the new Fire HDX 8.9.

In the end, if you’re not dissuaded by some of the limitations of Amazon’s Fire OS and, better still, if you’re an Amazon Prime subscriber or buy a lot of content from Amazon such as Kindle eBooks, the new Fire HDX 8.9 is by far the best tablet Amazon has produced to date. Its battery life is incredible, its display is fantastic and it looks and feels great in your hands.

Tack-sharp, vibrant screen. Superb battery life. Top-notch stereo speakers. An immersive headphone experience with Dolby Atmos. Great integration with Amazon services. Unlimited cloud storage for Amazon content makes the 16GB version doable. 24/7 video help. Firefly is neat-o. App ecosystem lags behind iOS and Android, and Google apps could fill in big gaps. The best deal is an 16GB version with lock-screen ads, but the an ad-free 32GB HDX jumps up to $444. Doesn’t look any different than the last one. Firefly doesn’t always work.

The 2014 Kindle Fire HDX 8.9, much like last year’s model, is a great tablet for entertainment. That's really where it excels. It ticks those all-important boxes you want in a larger tablet as well: it’s light and comfortable to use, has fantastic speakers and a gorgeous screen. The new Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 sticks with much of the same great hardware but with a few improvements that make it a fantastic tablet for video and reading. Its only downfall is an operating system that still needs some fine-tuning.

Amazon's updated 2014 Fire HDX 8.9-inch tablet seems to be a bit of a reactionary one. The device hasn't really changed much other than a faster processor and improved networking. Meanwhile, the competition has made some significant changes. This is still a good tablet, just not as great as it was when first released.

In using the HDX 8.9, I find myself able to do core things I want in a tablet, like email or gaming, and watching movies is a breeze. The screen on the HDX 8.9 is phenomenal, which only makes you want to watch movies and TV on it. The touchscreen is responsive, too. Interacting with the device is a pleasure.

That's the plus and the minus of the Fire tablet series in a nutshell. Amazon makes it clear: This is not an Android tablet. It's an Amazon?tablet. And while that may give a lot of geeks the heebie-jeebies, it's a simple, clear path for people who don't want to worry about the technical details of their tablets. The Amazon media stores, FreeTime, and Mayday all come together in one theme, which is creating a tablet experience with even more hand-holding (and thus less flexibility) than Apple provides.
