With the Xperia 1 Sony plays to its strengths and, despite some small issues, the results are impressive. The 4K, HDR, 21:9 aspect ratio OLED screen is a thing of true beauty and makes watching movies on the go a best-in-the-world experience, for example. While with the flagship Qualcomm Snapdraon 855 processor installed in the heart of its hardware suite, performance is rapid and power high. Below flagship-level battery life and fingerprint sensor performance, as well as some small camera system and charging niggles, take some sheen off the finished package, though.

Sony’s path through the smartphone market over the last decade has been full of peaks and valleys. I hoped the Xperia 1 would represent one of those peaks. Sadly, it’s somewhere halfway up (or down) the hill. The phone’s hardware is outstanding where quality is concerned. You’ve got nearly everything you could want: Gorilla Glass 6, metal frame, waterproof housing, 4K screen, triple cameras, and more. The Xperia 1 falls short in a few places, including battery life, camera performance, and general usability thanks to the odd shape. Further, there’s not enough 21:9 content (both videos and apps) to make sense of the stretched aspect ratio. Would I recommend this phone? Only to people specifically looking for something unique, or those who place an emphasis on media consumption. The $949 price tag is simply too high for what the phone delivers.

Let’s face it, Sony has had a hard time in the mobile space. When they left the Southeast Asian market awhile ago, I didn’t think they’d be back–at least, not so soon. But it looks like they’re not done yet because the company is back with a brand new flagship smartphone, and it’s going all in on being a cinematic experience.

Sony has clearly invested a lot in the Xperia 1’s audio feature set. Unfortunately, that investment doesn’t shine through when using the device to play music or movies through its speakers at the default settings. (Users should definitely experiment with enabling the phone’s Dolby Atmos functionality.) However, clarity is good even in default mode, which gives it a leg up for gamers. For those recording videos or audio with the phone, the news is better, as the Xperia 1 holds its own in all our use cases.

The Xperia 1 comes with a few pretty unique movie features, including a 21:9 aspect ratio, 24fps recording, and color management presets, which were not assessed under our test protocol. If you think those features could help lift your mobile videography to the next level, the Xperia 1 might well be worth a closer look. That said, the Sony Xperia 1’s image quality performance is surprisingly on par only with older or less expensive smartphones, demonstrating that camera software must be also be carefully tuned in order to optimize hardware performance and successfully compete in the high-end smartphone market.

Aside from that, it’s been a joy. The screen ratio makes certain aspects of usage great. For instance, watching movies and playing games that are sized for 21:9 look amazing. Also reading news or blogs is nicer too because there’s less scrolling involved as you’ll see more of the page. I’m also a huge fan of the dual speakers. It provides just the right amount of loudness for my needs and when I need to get more intimate with my movies or music, I just use my headphones.

Since this is not a full review, these aren’t my final thoughts and this might change later down the line. For now, this is how I feel after a few days of usage. For starters, I’m really digging the extra tall and narrow design of the Xperia 1. The narrowness makes it easier to hold and the tall screen means I can actually see more when I’m reading news or info on a website. It however can make one handed use a little tricky with things up top, but I can live with that.

Overall, I’m not convinced by the Xperia 1. I started this page by mentioning it’s a $949 phone, and at that price level I’m expecting excellence at most aspects of the phone. Unfortunately, the new Sony phone doesn’t showcase that. The screen and form-factor great, however is calibration issues, its higher power draw resulting in worse off battery performance, and the phone’s many problems with the cameras just don’t make it appealing as a purchase. This is especially in the face of the competition released earlier in the year which has seen larger price drops with which you’ll definitely end up as getting more value out of your purchase. Sony’s product development needs to focus on actually delivering a more solid and robust phone, rather than trying to upsell it via marketing buzz-words – here’s to hoping they’ll manage to get there.

The Xperia 1 has a near-perfect display, but its size makes the phone feel (and look) bizarre. If the company ditched the thick bezels around the camera and chin of the device, it could maintain that super-wide aspect ratio while looking more modern.

At the end of it all, the Xperia 1 is a powerful device, and I have to give Sony credit for bucking just about every smartphone trend out there to build something truly unique. But that uniqueness comes at a cost: Between its oddball screen and some puzzling decisions, this just isn't a sensible purchase for most people. We're all spoiled for choice when it comes to expensive flagship devices, and while the Xperia 1 definitely has its charms, they don't quite make sense for the masses.

As I said in my full Sony Xperia 1 review, I’m stunned at how poorly the Xperia 1’s camera performs. Not only is it not up to snuff when compared to other flagships, such as the Samsung Galaxy S10, Huawei P30 Pro, and Google Pixel 3 XL, it doesn’t even compare to the budget Google Pixel 3a XL. It’s hard to recommend a $949 phone when a $479 phone beats the snot out of it in the core category of photography. Bottom line, if you thought Sony’s adoption of the triple-camera setup would lead to a dramatic improvement in imaging quality, I’m here to tell you that’s not the case.

An interesting phone with a 21:9 aspect ratio 4K display that lends itself watching movies, which is where this Xperia sets itself apart from the masses. There's plenty of power and enough elsewhere to keep this phone competitive, but the camera app is muddled and in general this Sony struggles to lift itself to the top flight of flagship phone pile.

The Xperia 1 resolves those problems — mostly. The software is significantly improved, even with misses like Side Sense. The cameras use the branding and even some of the tech of its mirrorless cameras, but they aren’t the best you can get. Sony’s design is still great and, compared to other massive phones, much easier to hold in one hand. I really do like this form factor, and I’m glad Sony is giving it a shot.

Sony's mobile business is supposedly headed in a new direction, but one crucial aspect doesn't seem to have changed – pricing. In the US, the Sony Xperia 1 can be only pre-ordered for $949 on Amazon, and it won't ship until July 12. A Galaxy S10+ costs $50 less and you can have one today, either unlocked or through a carrier. Had Sony bundled it with a pair of premium earphones, the Xperia 1 would have been a great deal, but as things stand right now, it's going to be another tough sell for a Sony flagship in the US. And this is unfortunate at a point in time when Sony desperately needs a phone that sells.

The Sony Xperia 1 is a fitting flagship for 2019. It has one of the best displays ever on smartphone, much improved rear cameras, slick performance and attractively clean software. If you value the unique display above features like face unlock or wireless charging, then it's a good fit for you.

The Xperia 1 has one-of-a-kind 4K display, HDR OLED at that. The triple camera, the stereo speakers, latest Snapdragon chip, stylish design, and the IP68 ingress protection all add to an overall great package. The camera experience is a little bit rough around the edges but finally on par with the competition in the things that matter. Battery life could have been better, but we guess that the 4K screen needs its juice. We have no doubts anyone who buys the Xperia 1 will be as happy as we are with it. The Xperia 1 is priced like just about any other flagship smartphone at launch - it's not cheap by any margin but its price will only get better from here on making it a better deal down the line. But even as things stand right now, we think it deserves serious consideration by anyone looking for a high-end smartphone.

The Xperia 1 is a supermodel smartphone. After a week reviewing it, more squat phones just feel a bit weird. Its premium design and lithe frame shine, the screen is seriously good, there’s a clean interface, a great stills camera and it’s class-leading when it comes to video capabilities. It’s both the most expensive and the best Sony phone to date. Having said that, in the face of stiff competition from more affordable phones like the OnePlus 7 Pro and Honor 20 Pro, while it’s excellent, the Xperia 1 isn’t necessarily good value and its oddball size won't appeal to everyone. So if you’re a mobile gamer, watch more 16:9 shows than 21:9 movies, and care more about stills more than video, then there are other better phones out there that cost less. If, on the other hand, you’re a video enthusiast, edit a lot of documents, watch films when out and about, need a good camera and split-screen multitask a lot, this is cream of the crop.

This could – as we always seem to write – be Sony’s best phone yet. It most likely is. But we are still curious as to who this phone will appeal to. Sony doesn’t have the brand clout or marketing budget of Samsung so we do respect it for trying something different to appeal to niche buyers. But it seems like it’s fully slipped into the rut that LG is in, redesigning its phones twice a year to try and hang on to dwindling sales. It’s frustrating to us, then, that Sony had an event where loads of tech journalists could only look at a specs sheet and not even unlock the phone.

The Sony Xperia 1 is a little different and we love that about it. In a market where many flagship smartphones take on similar forms, it's good to see some variation. That 21:9 aspect ratio has some serious potential for those that love to watch films on their devices, as does that 4K HDR OLED display.

But I digress, Sony smartphones have been a huge part of Malaysia, most of us grew up using at least one of Sony's mobile phones (mine was one the Cybershot series, loved it). On one hand, it's kind of hard to be too surprised about Sony's new device announcements, purely on the grounds of the avalanche of leaks that preceded the MWC keynote. Then again, many of said rumors turned out to be nothing more than smoke and mirrors. Whether intentional or not on Sony's part, all that matters is that the devices the Japanese giant did unveil at the Barcelona event still managed to turn quite a few heads.
