O OnePlus Nord CE 2 tem uma proposta simples: oferecer experiência razoável a preço mais baixo. Para isso, tem hardware mais modesto que celulares topo de linha e conjunto fotográfico intermediário. Mas o celular atende bem à própria proposta e deve satisfazer o usuário que prefere apostar em um modelo chinês importado em vez de confiar na garantia dos smartphones vendidos oficialmente no Brasil. Pelo preço pode valer bastante a pena, ainda mais se considerar que dá para usá-lo tranquilamente por até 3 anos. O grande ponto forte do Nord CE 2 é seu tempo de uso. A bateria dura mais que os principais concorrentes, e ainda tem uma recarga bastante veloz. Mesmo que não chegue ao tempo divulgado pela fabricante, ainda fica abaixo de uma hora, e dá para ter um dia de uso com apenas 10 minutos na tomada. Outros fatores que pesam a favor são o processador veloz e estável para um intermediário, e o conjunto de câmeras. Neste segundo caso, porém, as fotos com baixa luminosidade podem não agradar tanto. E a gravação de vídeo ficou devendo um pouco, a meu ver.

The OnePlus Nord CE 2 doesn’t give you too many reasons to love it. Sure, the design is borrowed, but it’s an improvement over its predecessor. Likewise, the main camera is solid, it’s fast to charge, and the interface remains bloat-free. However, those aren’t big enough reasons to look past the glaring drabness of the Nord CE 2, and that’s before you factor in the outdated software, tinny mono speaker, and poor secondary cameras. As the Oppo-ification of OnePlus continues, derivative hardware is starting to become a theme. The OnePlus Nord CE 2 isn’t the worst phone you can buy for just shy of £300, but it does nothing to reverse the tide and is, unfortunately, yet another example of an uninspired budget smartphone from OnePlus amongst a sea of better alternatives. The Samsung A32 5G (£249) is still an easy recommendation that loses some processing power but melds quality cameras with a classy design and excellent software support. There’s also the Poco M4 Pro (£239) to consider with its IP53 rating, slick design, and superb battery life.

The OnePlus Nord CE 2 is good update to the original and if you haven't already bought the previous model, I'd say the new one is worth buying. It's basically a lower-priced Oppo Reno 7 without the spammy apps, which is not a bad deal. The Nord CE 2 offers a premium design, good performance, solid battery life, very fast charging, and decent cameras for still photography. Video recording is not its strong suit, but other than that, it's hard to complain. The OnePlus Nord CE 2 is by no means perfect and there are a couple of features that are missing, that other phones in this segment do offer. These aren't deal-breakers but would have been nice to have. For instance, if you're looking for an IP rating for dust and water resistance, the Motorola Edge 20 Fusion (Review) is a very good option. On the other hand, if you need good stereo speakers, it would be hard to beat the Realme 9 Pro+ which starts at around Rs. 25,000.

It has an attractive design, good display, relatively clean and simple UI with good performance, good main camera quality, decent battery life with fast charging, and even includes a few bells and whistles that have become increasingly rare, such as a headphone jack and expandable storage. The phone is also basically just the Oppo Reno7 5G with different software. While that may have been a valid strategy in the past, with the software between the two companies merging even that one difference wouldn't really be relevant in the future. At which point, why even have the two phones in the same market anymore. Moreover, why should the customer pick one over the other?

Leading the challengers is Xiaomi’s recently launched Xiaomi 11i, which comes with a larger 5,000 mAh battery, a 108-megapixel camera and a Dimensity 920 processor. Those willing to spend slightly more will also be tempted by the likes of the Realme GT and the Poco F3 GT, both of which come with Dimensity 1200 chips, and very eye-catching designs. At the end of the day, a lot is going to depend on how well the OnePlus Nord CE 2 5G actually performs. It has the looks, but with those specs, needs to deliver more than just a core experience to make it big in the category.

We need to spend more time with the OnePlus Nord CE 2, but early on, it feels like one of the best cheap phones I've personally tried. I don't know how long that will last, given that the Redmi Note 11 just launched, and the iPhone SE 3 is looming on the horizon, too. For now, though, the OnePlus Nord CE 2 is hoping to make a name for itself, and it seems off to a good start.
