As CPUs ULV Intel estão ficando cada vez melhores a cada ano, mesmo que suas diferenças de desempenho possam ser marginais. No entanto, esses pequenos ganhos estão se aproximando dos níveis de desempenho Core H, onde pensamos que as CPUs Core U podem ter um lugar no nível básico até os laptops de gama média para jogos.

A grande maioria dos laptops para jogos no mercado no momento vem com CPUs de 35 W a 45 W série Core H e GeForce GTX ou opções gráficas RTX. Além de um pequeno punhado de exceções, a maioria dos fabricantes não oferece opções Core U em nenhum de seus laptops para jogos, uma vez que o desempenho mais lento da CPU pode estrangular os gráficos de alto desempenho. Entretanto, a recente MSI Stealth 15M é o melhor exemplo que vimos até agora de uma CPU Core U funcionando extremamente bem com uma GPU GeForce RTX.

Como detalhado em nossa análise, o sistema MSI vem com uma CPU ULV Intel 11th gen Core i7-1185G7 que é um dos processadores mais rápidos disponíveis na família Tiger Lake-U. O desempenho bruto multi-tarefa é cerca de 3 a 15% mais lento que o Core i7-9750H, enquanto o desempenho de rosca única pode ser até 20 a 30% mais rápido. O Core i7-9750H alimentou a maioria dos laptops para jogos de 2019 e o Core i7-1185G7 já está de um pescoço a pescoço em desempenho bruto enquanto consome cerca da metade da energia.

Ao rodar jogos reais, o Stealth 15M e seu GeForce RTX 2060 Max-Q GPU apresentam apenas alguns pontos percentuais mais lento que a média GeForce GTX 1660 Ti laptop, embora a maioria destes sistemas concorrentes venha com CPUs Core H mais exigentes. Não estamos dizendo que todos os laptops para jogos com GeForce RTX 3070 ou 3080 GPUs devem vir com CPUs Core U, mas o déficit de desempenho entre os laptops para jogos Core H e os potenciais laptops para jogos Core U parece ser menor do que o esperado. Nossa experiência com a última Intel NUC equipada com a mesma CPU Core i7-1185G7, mas uma CPU ainda mais potente GeForce GPU RTX 3080 é mais uma prova de que a maioria dos jogos está muito mais vinculada à GPU do que à CPU ao ponto em que a última CPU Core U pode funcionar quase tão bem em muitos casos. Se os OEMs podem projetar laptops mais finos ou mais silenciosos com CPU Core U, então o déficit de desempenho relativamente pequeno pode valer a pena para alguns jogadores.
