Nvidia Tegra 4
O NVIDIA Tegra 4 é um SoC (System on a Chip) baseado em ARM, projetado principalmente para tablets e smartphones Android e Windows RT. Foi formalmente anunciado em Janeiro de 2013 e contém um CPU quad-core baseado na arquitetura Cortex-A15, uma placa de vídeo GeForce de 72 núcleos, um motor de vídeo, e um controlador de memória de dois canais DDR3L 1833. É fabricado na TSMC em HPL de 28nm (baixa potência com Alto-K + portões de metal otimizado para baixa fuga). Os chamados núcleos de processador 4-plus-1 são na verdade cinco núcleos do CPU ARM Cortex-A15 onde o quinto núcleo é usado em grande parte para fins de economia de energia. Como com o Tegra 3, este recurso não funcionará com o Windows RT dado que os quatro núcleos centrais estão sempre ativos. Os núcleos podem funcionar com uma frequência de até 1,9 GHz (dependendo do modelo) e a Nvidia afirma níveis de desempenho acima dos atuais SoCs de gama alta, como o Apple A6, quad-core Krait ou Exynos A15 dual-core. A placa de vídeo GeForce ULP integrada oferece 72 núcleos que ainda estão divididos em shaders de pixels e vertex distintos (sem núcleos CUDA unificados). Mesmo assim, o elevado número de núcleos deve proporcionar 6x o desempenho de um Tegra 3 e 1,6x do Apple A6 no GLBenchmark 2.5, de acordo com a Nvidia. Além disso, o motor de vídeo foi melhorado e agora oferece suporte para codificação e decodificação 1440p VP8 e H.264 HP. Alguns modelos suportam USB 3.0, e espera-se que todos suportem e.MMC 4.5. O consumo de energia deve estar no mesmo patamar do chip Tegra 3 de acordo com a Nvidia. O gerenciamento de cores PRISM 2 pode ajudar a economizar energia, diminuindo o brilho da tela sem sacrificar a visibilidade. Além disso, o processo de 28nm permite menos consumo de energia geral. Os modelos T40S e T40K estão destinados para super telefones, tablets, e clamshells, enquanto que o AP40 e AP43 estão destinados para smartphones convencionais. Espera-se diferenças nas frequências máximas e, possivelmente, nos recursos de conectividade (como USB 3.0).
