The Moto G is available now for $200 on Motorola's website. It's a steal at that price, especially if you're not a hardcore gamer who demands the best graphical performance. This is a great mid-range phone with solid hardware, and I recommend it to anyone hunting for a bargain. If you're open to alternatives, consider the new Moto G Power. It has many of the same features but supports 15W wireless charging and boasts a more durable design. If you love exploring the outdoors, the Moto G Power will be the better partner.

The real problem is that the Motorola Moto G (2025) will get left behind. I think it lags badly enough in day-to-day life that people who buy it will ultimately end up frustrated and looking for something else. During my weeks with the phone, I’ve missed more camera shots than I can count, I’ve had my notification shade slowed to a crawl by ads for a service that I’m not going to use, and I’ve had apps quit on themselves simply because RAM Boost hasn’t kicked in yet. Eventually, the Moto G (2025) kicks into gear and runs a little smoother, but I’d hate to see it struggle in the face of an emergency. Also, whether Motorola likes it or not, other cheap Android phones keep improving. Even though I much prefer the design of the Moto G (2025) to something like Samsung’s Galaxy A16 5G ($199.99 at Samsung), it’s much easier to recommend the latter for one main reason: Android updates.

Ultimately, the Moto G 2025 delivers what you’d expect from a $200 smartphone. It isn’t trying to compete with flagship devices or even mid-range options. It’s designed for those who need an affordable device without frills or high expectations. For those who value design and battery life above all else, this could be an excellent choice at an unbeatable price. But if smooth performance or great cameras are non-negotiable for you, it might be worth spending more on something a bit higher up the chain. The nothing Nothing CMF Phone 1 ($239) features an improved Mediatek Dimensity 7300 processor, 8GB of RAM, an AMOLED display, and a 50-megapixel camera.

I have a soft spot for phones in the sub-$200 range as they’re often more than enough for what consumers need. Sure, there’s plenty we might want, but when it comes down to it, most folks could get something like this to last a year or two. We’ve seen considerably lesser-quality experiences at higher prices over the years so I dig where the Moto G (2025) fits. The Moto G (2025) offers a budget-friendly option with a large battery, vegan leather design, and Android 15 out of the box. However, its low-resolution display, sluggish performance, and somewhat limited camera capabilities make it a bit less competitive. I love where Motorola’s heart is with the G series but I might suggest it checks in with its head on future models. At $200, the Moto G (2025) is still a decent value proposition for an unlocked phone, but I’d feel a lot more confident recommending it if you could snag it for around $175. At that price, the compromises would feel a lot easier to swallow.

If you’re in the market for a low-cost, no-frills Android phone that does the basics well, the Moto G (2025) is a good option. It is well-designed and has phenomenal battery life. The display can be off-putting for some, although it shouldn’t, as it’s enough for daily use. I also enjoyed the stock Android experience of the Moto G. The main aspects holding the Moto G back are its lackluster performance, Motorola’s poor update history, and mediocre camera performance. No phone is perfect, and that’s evident here.

The Moto G 2025 is a return to form for Motorola, delivering a solid $200 entry-level phone to the U.S. market and a marked improvement over last year's Moto G. It improves nearly everything without raising the price tag, something that's even more impressive since Moto lowered the price tag by $50 last year. You'll need to separately purchase a charging brick for the best charging performance and the macro camera is still an unnecessary addition, but the rest of the package is a real winner at this price.

The Moto G (2025) is not exactly an inspiring phone and we are let down by Motorola's slow progress with the series. At $200, it's a cheap phone, there is no denying that, but we feel that rivals like the Samsung Galaxy A16 5G give you more bang for the buck. The Galaxy has a more vibrant screen, longer software support, and a slightly better camera, all while having roughly the same performance. Motorola is relying more on its brand name with the Moto G and its software tricks and solid battery life. The phone will get the job done for basic tasks, so we cannot recommend against it entirely. You should consider it if you find a great deal, knocking the price further down, but ultimately, the Galaxy A16 5G seems like the more sensible option.

Motorola hasn't done enough to differentiate the 2025 Moto G from its predecessor or from its competitors. We appreciate the simple design aesthetic, the large screen, and the long battery life, but little else. The phone's performance has not improved, the radios remain outdated, and the cameras generate the same just-average photos. While the Motorola Moto G remains affordable, the Samsung Galaxy A15 is better in nearly every way despite its age. And if you can wait, we expect the newer Galaxy A16 to be a top pick once we get a chance to test it.

While I wish Motorola would have used a brighter display for this year's version of the Moto G and while the performance won't wow anyone, these are the sorts of things you expect from a phone in this price range. What you don't expect is a phone this cheap to have such a decently performing camera, as the Moto G (2025) produced some genuinely good images. If it could do that on a more consistent basis, it would be a no-brainer budget buy. Still, it's a reasonable option for phone buyers on a budget thanks to the longer-lasting battery in this year's version and more extensive software support from Motorola. As with any phone this cheap, you make some sacrifices, but the list of trade-offs the Moto G requires get smaller with each new edition.
