The Motorola Moto G 5G (2024) is the middle member of the 2024 Moto G lineup, replacing the 2023 model of the same name. It comes equipped with a Snapdragon 4 Gen 1 chipset, a pair of rear cameras, and a Sage Green vegan leather finish that feels as good as it looks.

When evaluating the Moto G 5G (2024), you can take one of two tacks — you can focus on what this budget phone can't do or you can appreciate what it manages to offer while keeping its starting price at $200. I lean toward the latter. No, the phone has some performance hiccups and it's not going to wow anyone with the photos it produces. I also wish the screen were a bit brighter. But for someone with a limited budget, the Moto G 5G does exactly the things you need it to, while also surprising with its long battery life and pleasing design. The only real note of caution I would have is about the limited update policy, which may prevent you from holding on to the Moto G 5G for more than a couple years. But other than that, the phone delivers good value for its price, which will satisfy budget-minded shoppers.

The Moto G 5G is a good choice for certain groups of people. There are bargain hunters who don’t need a bunch of bells and whistles, people who want an inexpensive backup phone, and people who want a starter phone for a kid. For $200, the Moto G 5G will deliver solid performance with decent battery life and knock-your-socks-off audio. It can also take passable social media pics and videos in the right lighting conditions. It doesn’t come without some major caveats in the form of a dim display and a whole lot of unnecessary bloatware. And shutterbugs looking for more premium photos should ignore this smartphone completely. Plus, I’m not too thrilled with Motorola’s short support window. But again, for those looking for an inexpensive smartphone that can do a bit more than the bare minimum, the Moto G 5G is worth a look.

The Motorola Moto G 5G looks better on paper than it does in your hands. The specs are all seemingly there, but they don't quite add up to a phone we recommend without reservations. The 6.6-inch screen is sizable and fast, but its low resolution and lack of brightness take away from the experience. Performance leaves a lot to be desired, and the camera simply isn't very good. For the same price, you’re much better off with the Samsung Galaxy A15 5G, our Editors' Choice for affordable phones, which outperforms the Moto G in just about every category.

All that is to say the Moto G 5G 2024 is not a bad phone. In fact, you'd be hard-pressed to find a better phone at this price. If you're looking for a handset that looks sleek and attractive but you don't prioritize performance, this might be your device. Should the company be able to flesh out the software bugs via updates, this could be a real winner of a budget Android phone.

Building a quality phone for $200 is difficult, as companies have to balance components that don't cost much but still offer a "good enough" experience to feel worth the purchase. For the most part, the Moto G 5G 2024 fits the bill but it has a few shortcomings to be aware of. Performance requires some patience, but it's nowhere near the disastrous level that we saw from budget Moto phones in 2022. Unfortunately, the faster performance meant Motorola had to make concessions on the camera quality. It's not awful, but it's (ironically) not as good as we saw from Moto in 2022. Thankfully, though, daily use is just fine so long as you turn off the silly RAM boost feature. The inclusion of NFC means this can be used for mobile payments and other important modern features, plus a 3.5mm headset jack, all-day battery life, and fast 18W charging means you won't get annoyed by the little things that some other phones skimp on. All in all, it's a solid $200 buy if that's the top of your budget for a new phone.

The Moto G 5G (2024) is one of the best kinds of products for reviews to look at. While drooling after the latest and greatest $1000+ beast to hit the scene, we typically turn a judgemental eye to phones that cost under $300. We write them up as cheap slabs that just get us through the day. I admit that this is what I initially thought about this phone. I got the box and said, “Well, here it is…” This was all while using the Galaxy S24+ as my daily driver. But, phones like the Moto G 5G (2024) exemplify one of the BEST skills that a smartphone OEM can have, being able to craft a solid smartphone experience on a budget. Cherry-picking and juggling compromises in order to create the most optimal experience that a person can have for not too much money. This is the driving force behind the mid-range and budget smartphone markets.

At one point, Motorola was making some pretty good Moto G phones. Unfortunately, the Moto G 5G (2024) is not one of them. While I like the overall design of the Moto G 5G (2024), with its vegan leather back, small camera bump, and curved edges, that’s not enough to redeem all of the phone’s other flaws. The low-res LCD display just feels so out of place given today’s standards. There are budget phones out there that use OLED panels, so still relying on a low-quality LCD screen is hard to accept. Combined with the low brightness tha makes its next to impossible to see outdoors, it’s a really disappointing setup. Not to mention, the performance is bad. The Snapdragon 4 Gen 1 with just 4GB RAM is barely useable, and even when it is, it’s not enjoyable with all the lagging and stuttering.

The Moto G 5G is a solid budget device for those looking for a reliable device that doesn't break the bank. At its MSRP of $199 USD, it is hard to argue with its value proposition. However, if Motorola is not your thing, there are other options out there at this same price point that may be of interest, such as the Samsung Galaxy 15 5G or the Google Pixel 6a. My experience with this device as I was testing it for this review was very positive. In fact, I was surprised at how much I enjoyed using this device over the flagships I'm used to. It may have something to do with how premium it felt in the hand or how easy it was to handle due to its smaller size (disclaimer: My hands are on the small-ish side). Either way, I found myself reaching for this device more often than my usual go-tos. I would highly recommend the Moto G 5G to others looking for a reliable and budget-friendly smartphone option that still delivers great performance. Its impressive battery life and 5G capabilities make it a solid choice for those in need of a dependable device for everyday use.
