The $250 Moto G 5G is not a bad phone. It's just that you might get more value looking around. I kept returning to that feeling throughout my weeks reviewing the phone, despite the dramatically reduced price this year's model hits compared with last year's $400 Moto G 5G. For instance, I like the phone's 6.5-inch 120Hz display. But the screen isn't dramatically better than the 90Hz displays I see in $200 phones like the Moto G Stylus or the Samsung Galaxy A14 5G. The 5G connectivity is noticeably fast compared with 4G-only phones like the Stylus, but the Moto G 5G's slower Snapdragon 480 Plus processor coupled with 4GB of RAM aren't quite enough to power resource-heavy multitasking that truly take advantage of 5G speeds. Even though the Moto G 5G's cameras are similar those on other Moto G phones, photos are hit or miss.

All told, there’s not much that the Moto G 5G (2023) offers that would make me recommend it. Its performance is slow, the cameras are middling, its screen is fine at best, and its fingerprint scanner makes for a frustrating user experience when simply trying to lock the phone. For $250, you can do far better with the likes of the Samsung Galaxy A14, which retails for just $200. If you’re able to spend just $50 more, you can even pick up the Moto G Power 5G, which does everything that the Moto G 5G does — but astronomically better. Similarly, the OnePlus Nord N30 5G is also available for $299 and is one of the best phones available at that price. Given how compromised the experience of using the Moto G 5G (2023) is, I just don’t know why anyone would pick it up over the G Power other than to save $50. At $250, the Moto G 5G doesn’t justify its price in any area that counts. When compared to other phones at this price point, you’re better off spending your money elsewhere.

Motorola knows how to make cheap phones with good value, and that extends to most of its latest offerings. The Moto G 5G (2023) offers plenty of upgrades over its predecessor while launching at a much more affordable price point that makes it hard to resist. It's a good phone with a few annoying quirks that aren't necessarily dealbreakers. That said, I can't help but feel like I've used this phone before. Having just come off reviewing the Moto G Power 5G and even the Moto G Stylus (2023), the new Moto G 5G (2023) just feels redundant, like it's being awkwardly squeezed into a space already occupied by plenty of other Motorola phones.

The Motorola Moto G 5G (2023) doesn't pick up too many upgrades, but it delivers a $150 price cut that brings new value to the budget device, even if it's still not the best in its price tier. With near-stock Android, a solid primary camera, and two-day battery life, the Moto G 5G (2023) is easy to recommend as a decent starter smartphone.

In the end, we can say that the Motorola Moto G 2023 is a combination of exciting features and appealing features. However, the phone does have its equip share of downsides. For example, the video recording photos’ quality is average. However, the phone comes with an HD-resolution display. But still, we can’t be denied that this phone is 5G supported. With this, you can surf the Internet faster than before. Aside from this, the phone will grant subtle support with sufficient enough storage. Yet, if you are looking for alternative options, you should consider Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 would be a pretty good choice that you should check out after this review. Finally, we only recommend this phone to those people who want to experience a clean UI experience on their phone.

The Motorola Moto G 5G is absolutely dirt cheap and scores well in a number of essential departments, but lags behind in others. Can it go toe to toe with one of the big boys in terms of raw performance? No, of course not. But it does enough to handle the average smartphone user's daily tasks with ease, play most if not all current mobile games, has a very large battery, and the 5G connectivity means you can get the most from the majority of phone plans currently on offer. The "night mode" camera was a bit of a letdown, mainly because it was built up so much. But you will be able to take good photos in most conditions. With that said, there are slightly pricier options that do outgun the Moto G 5G in several departments, such as RAM, biometric features, and camera quality. But those mainly show up if you're treating this as a "lower-end" phone. It's not as impressive as the original Moto G was at launch, but if we're only talking about devices that cost $250 or less, then this is a great option.
