The Moto Edge 5G UW (2021) may be a decent phone: its unusually high 144Hz refresh rate on the LCD screen works great; and it has two days of battery life, with a camera that can handle low-light photography if you can get it to focus. But that’s no longer enough to be competitive in the midrange phone race. Unless Verizon or Motorola further drop its price, I find it hard to recommend the Moto Edge over others that offer a better value. For the price of the 256GB Moto Edge, you might as well get the unlocked Google Pixel 6 instead. It features a faster processor, faster and sharper cameras, and a more energy-efficient battery. While the $599.99 Moto Edge offers double the onboard storage as the base Pixel 6, its flagship-class components and early access to Android software and security updates make it the better investment in the long run.

On many fronts, the Motorola Edge 5G UW impressed me. The phone was reliable, lasted all-day, felt good in the hand, and offers a solid camera performance. It even offers fast 30W charging speeds, which not even Samsung’s flagship phones provide, so that’s a definite win. For the most part, I have no qualms with this phone, and definitely would recommend it to anyone looking for a sub-$600 phone. Of course, that’s only if you can’t spring the extra $50 for the Pixel 6.

If you've overlooked Motorola's higher-end phones in the past, the Motorola Edge 5G UW does a very good job at trying to regain your attention. Improvements to the main camera impress, and even if this can't topple a premium camera phone like the iPhone 13, it's a vast improvement over the previous Motorola Edge. I'm also impressed by how quickly the phone recharges. The 144Hz refresh rate is probably a step too far, given the impact it has on what would have been solid battery life — especially when a 120Hz refresh rate would have been more than enough at this price point. I also think the lone speaker detracts from what would otherwise be an enjoyable gaming experience on an affordable phone. It's the affordability that ultimately wins the day for the Motorola Edge 5G UW.

The Motorola Edge (2021) and Motorola Edge 5G UW are solid phones that boast premium features and a reasonable price. The phones are part of Motorola's 2021 premium lineup. Up to this point, the Chicago-based company, which is owned by Lenovo, has spent most of 2021 launching a slew of sub-$500 phones in the US. These include the Moto G Stylus 5G, Moto G Power and Motorola One 5G Ace. The Edge (2021), announced in August, is defined by simplified improvements. The curved display is gone and replaced by a decidedly flat one with a 144Hz high refresh rate. The glass back has been swapped out for a lighter plastic one with a striking blue finish that, almost hypnotically, changes depending on how it catches the light. A new software feature called Ready For lets you wirelessly connect your phone to a TV or monitor.

The Motorola Edge 5G UW is a solid midrange handset that excels in some areas and not as much in others. It lost the fancy curved-edge OLED display that the previous model had, but the IPS LCD it does have looks fantastic and boasts a truly impressive refresh rate. Overall performance is great, battery life is exceedingly long, and the camera performance is decent enough in most lighting conditions. This is one of the best affordable 5G phones of the year, with a higher refresh rate and bigger battery than other handsets in that category. The bottom-firing speaker could use an upgrade, but Verizon Adaptive Sound adds an extra dimension if you connect Bluetooth headphones or a speaker. I’d also prefer to see wireless charging in a phone at this price point, and the camera performance does suffer in low light, all of which does hold this phone back a bit.
