So, I believe with a few quick manual adjustments from a base model of 16GB to 32 or 64GB or memory pushes the Gen 4 beyond the XPS15 at this point and allows the device to go toe to toe with Apple's ARM marvel in the M1 powered MacBook in terms of overall performance. Understanding this is a Windows machine with an Intel CPU at its heart should prep any buyer with right mindset to make the most of the occasional fan noise, heat and battery drain from really pushing this device. While much of the Lenovo computer line up can be a head scratcher with overlapping product categories, the Gen 4 is clear buy for anyone who favors a truly portable workstation. Yes, there is the P-series and its thicker cousins in the T and L lines, but when it comes to totting around relatively compact PC equivalent of MacBook Pro right now, the options are the Gen 4 and XPS 15 and the Gen 4 offers better overall CPU and GPU performance.

The Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Extreme is a nice laptop to grab going into 2022. Quirks aside, it’s an excellent, professional-looking laptop with a lot of horsepower and a portable format for its size. If you’re the type that has to do serious work in an office but you're also a closet gamer, this could be the laptop to keep up your reputation. It’s not all perfect though – no laptop is, and I'll get in-depth on all the pros and quirks of this series in the review down below.

Lenovo has finally achieved what they set out to do with the ThinkPad X1 Extreme: make a very thin and light mobile workstation with serious graphics power and displays that are perfect for content creators and consumers alike. The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 4 is the 2021 refresh with some big changes, including a new 16”, 16:10 aspect ratio display with 2K and 4K options, NVIDIA RTX graphics ranging from RTX 3050 Ti to RTX 3080 Max-Q, Intel 11th gen H series 45 watt processors, a bigger battery, improved trackpad and optional 5G. It competes with the Dell XPS 15.

Overall, the ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 4 is a nice, light 16-inch laptop. Performance, however, is somewhat below its competitive counterparts, and it commands a bit of a price premium. Some folks might still opt for the ThinkPad because of its usual best-in-class keyboard, top notch build quality and Lenovo's excellent reputation for endurance-focused workhorses like this. In the end, it may come down to brand loyalty, aesthetics, weight and deal pricing at the time of purchase. Regardless, depending on your needs, the ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 4 certainly measures up well enough to be HotHardware Approved.

The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen4 (official page) is a formidable update from a year ago. It is one of the best thin & light 16-inch business laptops for its peak performance and overall features. And keep in mind that we only tested the slower version of this computer! With faster RTX 3070 and 3080 GPU options, the graphics performance has more potential. Even though I wonder how thermal limitations could affect their peak performance, I know that peak speeds would be significantly higher. Objectively, the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme has the best configuration options in its category, making it very hard to beat in its most “extreme” version: Core i9-11950H+RTX 3080. For short and heavy compute workloads going from 20mn to 5mn is still a desirable and measurable productivity gain. You’ll have to figure this out for your use case and price it. In conclusion, as the most “extreme” ThinkPad X1, this laptop is a great product that can handle any business application and will be a great companion during times of fun as well.

One of my colleagues, who shall remain anonymous, quipped that the Microsoft Surface Studio Laptop is a machine for creatives made by people who'd never talked to any creatives. I don't completely agree, but you know who definitely talked to people who create digital art on their laptops? Lenovo. Everything my pro photographer friends complain about is solved here. A 4K screen with OK battery life? Check. The power to not just watch movies but also edit and render them? Check. How about an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 dedicated graphics card? Check. Did I mention there's a full-size SD card slot? How about HDMI 2.1 for monitoring shoots? My biggest gripe with this laptop is one that plagues all of Lenovo's laptops: the insane list price. The top-tier model has a retail price of more than $4,500. But Lenovo is selling it for what appears to be a permanent sale, about $2,600. That's still a lot of money for a laptop, but if you need the video editing power on Windows, the X1 Extreme is a good choice.

Lenovo says that the target audience for the ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 4 are professionals such as engineers, architects and designers, but I think it’s best to break down which niche would benefit the most from this 16-inch laptop. I would rule out photo editors — only because there are better options. Compared to its rivals, the ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 4’s display isn’t as colorful. If you’re a photo editor, I’d recommend the OLED-packed Dell XPS 15 or the Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio with its clever hinge. Due to its spectacular file-transfer and video-transcoding test results, I’d recommend this laptop to professionals with a “time is money” mentality who often work with a plethora of files and need an ultra-fast system that can handle them like a champ. I’d also recommend the ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 4 to music professionals, voice actors and podcast producers because the speakers are fantastic. The ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 4 doesn’t have the best battery life, but compared to its rivals with comparable internals, it can last through an 8-hour workday — its competitors can’t.

Review of the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 4 packs in some amazing performance in a small body. The upgrade to a 16:10 display is finally here but there's a few things to watch out for. The big question though should you buy this or the Dell XPS 15?
