The LG Wing is a fun example of how to pack dual-screen functionality into a phone that's only slightly larger than your average big (big) phone. But LG's Android software, and the phone's 60Hz refresh rate, make the experience less fluid and intuitive than it should be. And the software gimbal feature, with its poor low-light capabilities, seems like a missed opportunity.

The LG Wing is a one-of-a-kind smartphone that brings a completely new form factor to the market. LG's approach is unique, and the Wing stands out in a sea of similar-looking smartphones. Since this is LG's first attempt at a T-shaped folding smartphone, the Wing is a bit thick and bulky, which could make a few buyers think twice. There aren't many rough edges here, but recent reports hint that LG could quit the smartphone industry entirely, making a successor uncertain.

With smartphone design and screen innovation somewhat stagnant these past couple of years, it’s refreshing to see something totally unique from LG. The Wing’s dual-screen possibilities could prove useful for multitasking and for offering more intuitive control, with apps configured to run over two displays. Those might be limited at the moment, but with manufacturers like LG and Samsung driving multi-window or split screen displays, we could be seeing the future of smartphone design. The LG Wing is less revolutionary in our analysis of image quality, however. For the most part it’s fairly competent, with nice color rendering, accurate target exposures, and well-controlled noise its main strengths.

Yes, if you are one of those who have been contemplating a dual-screen or foldable phone. This phone is much more affordable and offers a very unique experience that can also be practical. I recommend this phone for those who record a lot of video, either for a hobby or for work. The adventurous among them will really love the gimbal mode. The extra screen is an add-on that is worthy of the price tag. And being an LG phone, the chances are the prices will drop soon, making this phone an even better buy.

The LG Wing isn’t for everyone. There are just a few out there that will want to give this smartphone a try, and those people will thoroughly enjoy it. There are also a handful of users who like to try new tech out and for those people, well, using the LG Wing is pretty fun, and it’s certainly a conversation starter. Overall, the Wing isn’t for those who aren’t really interested in trying new and unique devices. This is a phone for the more adventurous, willing to deal with a few annoyances and compatibility issues to enjoy something different. I think LG made the right choice in pricing this where they did. It’s accessible and not wallet crushing giving curious tech users a taste of a different world.

The tech-loving geek in me adores the fact that LG did something kooky with the Wing. It’s part of what the company calls its Explorer Project, focusing more on imagination than outright sales potential. The realist in me thinks that’s a good thing, because while the Wing may be fun it doesn’t really deliver functionally.

LG continues to try and bring you a different smartphone experience than the norm that we have grown accustomed too. Its welcome but will everyone else accept it? The Wing for starters is great for the multitasker allowing two apps to work simultaneously or expand on one. The problem with that 2nd part is not all apps support it and we will be lucky if they will. If you are looking to try various ways to create content the Wing will keep you occupied especially with its Gimbal features.

In the end, beyond the swivel design and matching $1000 price tag, this is a solid handset. You’re getting lovely displays, nice cameras, worthy performance, and excellent battery life. Sure, LG’s software skin could use updating, and the mono speaker is disappointing, but these aren’t deal breakers. What’s important here is that LG took a chance and made a truly special device. And we can’t wait to see what the Explorer Project delivers next.

It’s an incredibly thick phone that I think most people won’t enjoy, and you know cases will be few and far between. For this amount of money you can grab something with better cameras, longer battery life, and more features that aren’t gimped by Android apps’ lack of support, and LG doesn’t do themselves any favors with their track record on Android updates.

I’ll make this real simple: No, you shouldn’t go out and buy the Wing. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone, even those who want to be Instagram influencers and YouTubers. I’m not even going to recommend it to the commuters and gig drivers out there. The LG Wing is purely a sweet concept phone that LG decided to actually make, and at $1K, you can do better. If you really want a crazy design, I’d have you wait for LG’s next Explorer device, suggested to feature some type of rollable display. That looks much more useful in terms of everyday usage.

I thought having the main display swivel to reveal a smaller display might be more of a novelty than anything else, but I have been proven wrong. I use the LG Wing 5G in Basic Mode most of the time, like I’d use any other smartphone. But when I want to multi-task, it is so convenient to have the smaller second display available in Swivel Mode to enhance and enrich my experience. The LG Wing snuck up on me; I didn’t expect to enjoy using it as much as I do, but that is exactly what happened.

The LG Wing’s rotating display is a marvel of engineering and an incredibly fun novelty, the kind of design innovation that’s exciting to see in a world where most smartphone designs are just variations on the same identical black slabs. The LG Wing is just the kind of phone I’d feature on an episode of my “When Phones Were Fun” throwback series … if it hadn’t just debuted this month! When it comes to offering more screen real estate on a smartphone, manufacturers have two options: either go with a flexible display à la Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 2, or attach a secondary screen like the LG Velvet. While the latter is obviously the easier (and cheaper) option, both implementations have a common problem: multi-tasking only works well when both apps are in portrait orientation, due to the design of most apps.

These days, phones are either rectangular slabs with one straight screen or, in the case of the Galaxy Z Fold 2 or Motorola Razr 5G, they're slabs with flexible screens that open up. But the LG Wing is neither. Instead, it's a phone with two screens, one of which swivels on top of the other.

Turns out the swiveling LG Wing phone, which was leaked ahead of its announcement in a YouTube video, is real and as wacky as the rumors purported it to be.
