Intel 520M

O Intel Core i5-520M é um CPU dual core de alta capacidade para portáteis e apresenta uma freqüência (graças ao Modo Turbo) de 2,4 até 2,93 GHz. Cada núcleo se baseia na micro-arquitetura Nehalem (Westemere). O Hyperthreading permite que o CPU Dual Core suporte 4 threads de uma vez (para um melhor uso do pipeline). Comparado com o mais veloz Core i7-620M, o 520M somente apresenta 3 MB L3 Cache e uma freqüência mais baixa (CPU e GPU).

Uma característica do novo Core i5-520M é a placa de vídeo integrada chamada GMA HD e controlador de memória. Ambos estão em um molde separado que ainda é fabricada em 45nm enquanto o molde de CPU já é fabricado no novo processo de 32nm.

O desempenho do i5 520M é, em média, mais veloz que um Core 2 Duo T9500 e graças ao Turbo Boost, aplicativos single threaded se executam ainda melhor. Portanto, o Core i5-520M é tão veloz quanto CPUs Core 2 Duo de alta freqüência e deveriam agüentar bem a maioria de jogos e tarefas multimídia.

Os núcleos de cpu de 32nm da geração Westmere também pode processar algumas instruções novas para acelerar criptografias AES.

A placa de vídeo integrada Intel Graphics Media Accelerator HD (GMA HD) é conhecida por apresentar uma freqüência de até 500-766 MHz e deve ser claramente mais veloz que a antiga GMA 4500MHD. Uma GeForce 9400M (ION) ainda deve ser um pouco mais veloz (especialmente devido a que as placas da Nvidia e ATI possuem um melhor suporte para controladores que a Intel até agora). De acordo com os rumores, o núcleo GMA também usará o Modo Turbo para regular a freqüência.

O consumo de energia de 35 Watt TDP (máx.) conta para todo o pacote e, portanto, é claramente melhor que o TDP de 35 Watt da série-T Core 2 Duo (somente CPU). Graças ao Turbo Boost, o Core i5 provavelmente usa mais TDP sob carga que CPUs Core 2 Duo mais antigos. Sem carga alguma, o i5 usa muito menos energia.
