Intel 480M

O Intel Core i5-480M é um CPU dual core de classe média para portáteis e funciona com freqüências (graças ao Modo Turbo) de 2,66 a 2,9 GHz. Cada núcleo baseia-se na micro-arquitetura Nehalem (Westmere). O Hyperthreading habilita o CPU Dual Core para controlar 4 threads simultaneamente (para um melhor uso do pipeline). Comparada com o Core i5-540M, o 480M provavelmente não suporta funções AES, VT-d e Trusted Execution e apresenta um Turbo Boost mais lento (2,9 contra 3,06 GHz). No entanto, a freqüência básica é um pouco mais alta.

Uma característica do novo Core i5-480M é a placa de vídeo integrada chamada GMA HD e controlador de memória. Ambos estão em um molde separado que ainda é fabricado em 45nm enquanto que o molde do CPU já é fabricado no novo processo de 32nm.

O desempenho do Core i5-480M, em média, é mais rápido que um Core 2 Duo T9800 de 2,8 GHz e em alguns benchmarks ainda mais veloz que o mais veloz Core 2 Duo T9900 (como a pontuação do CPU do 3DMark 06). Portanto, o Core i5-480M é um cpu dual core de alta capacidade que deve cuidar de todo o trabalho diário e tarefas de jogos. Somente os CPUs quad core i7 podem ser notavelmente mais rápidos em tarefas que precisam de quatro ou mais threads (como rendering).

A placa de vídeo Intel Graphics Media Accelerator HD (GMA HD) integrada é conhecida por ter uma freqüência de até 500-766 MHz e deve ser notavelmente mais rápida que a antiga GMA 4500MHD. Uma GeForce 9400M (ION) ainda deve ser mais rápida (especialmente devido a que as placas Nvidia e ATI possuem um melhor suporte de controlador até agora). Segundo os rumores, o núcleo GMA também usará o Modo Turbo para regular a freqüência.

O consumo de energia de 35 Watt TDP (máx.) conta para todo o pacote e, portanto, é claramente melhor que o TDP de 35 Watt do Core 2 Duo da série T (somente CPU). Graças ao Turbo Boost, o Core i5 provavelmente use os 35 Watt do TDP sob carga e, portanto pode usar mais energia que um Core 2 Duo similar. Em modo Inativo, o i5 evidentemente usa menos energia que os CPUs Core 2 Duo.
