The Huawei P50 Pro delivers a contrasted performance in the audio department. In playback, we’d mainly recommend it for gaming thanks to its good spatial performance, and a suitable tonal balance. Music and movie playback are a little less well endowed due to a lack of clarity and strong bass resonances and distortion. As a recording device, thanks to excellent results in volume, good spatial attributes, and a harmonious frequency response in most use cases, the Huawei P50 Pro runs neck-to-neck with such skilled devices as the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra (Exynos), or the Xiaomi 12 Pro. The Huawei P50 Pro is particularly suited for recording in loud environments and makes a fairly good choice for selfie videos and meeting room recordings.

Well, there you have it; a gorgeous smartphone with a beautiful display and a camera setup to rival the best in the business. However, all that will cost you a whopping £1,100. This isn't that unusual for a premium smartphone - but there are other devices available for much less, such as the Google Pixel 6 or the OnePlus 9 Pro, both of which have very similar specs. That being said, the effort Huawei has put into building out its app ecosystem is really paying off. Both the Mate 40 Pro and the P40 Pro were almost wasted on Western Europeans because of the lack of Google services. But Huawei's P50 Pro might have that little bit more to offer.

All in all, the Huawei P50 Pro is a great phone with a lot going for it. The screen is stunning, it’s powerful and it has a good battery life. Not to mention the camera which is the focal point of this handset and manages to produce some really incredible shots. But, and it is a very big but, the Huawei P50 Pro is lacking in some very significant ways which really lets it down and makes it much more difficult to recommend. Pretty much every other recent flagship phone in 2022 has up to date connectivity, so you’re bound to feel hard done by paying such an eye-watering amount of money on a device that doesn’t have 5G support. While that will be off-putting, for the majority of people, it’ll be the lack of Google apps that would stop them splashing out on this. If you tend to to avoid the global tech giant anyway then it won’t be a problem, and well done you, but it’s hard to avoid in Europe. We all use Google in one way or another, whether that’s for email, cloud storage or smart home control.

Huawei phones aren’t a great fit for most people now that they don’t have Google apps. It isn’t just about the apps themselves, but how it limits your access to the wider Android app ecosystem. Trying to fill the gaps through third-party app stores doesn’t work, not when you’re looking at spending this much money. The problem is compounded by the Huawei P50 Pro’s outdated processor and lack of 5G, which add to the sense that you’re not getting a great deal. That said, the Huawei P50 Pro’s camera is a blast to use. The main camera is great, the 3.5x zoom is among the best around. And while there are some minor gripes about colour-tuning at times, these are overshadowed by the good stuff.

We’ve judged the P50 Pro as a 2021 flagship phone despite arriving in early 2022. Even with the leeway offered, its performance and appearance could hardly keep up with its user-friendliness, or value for money. Consumers would likely be less forgiving than we are. To us, the Huawei P50 Pro is promising, but also too little, and too late. Even for an average user who doesn’t care for processors, specs, or network types, you’d expect the flagship phone to simply work– and likely find the opposite to be true. For all its amazing photo and video capturing capabilities, the phone's overall usability leaves much to be desired. If only the Huawei P50 Pro was an imaging add-on device to a regular phone, perhaps it could still redeem itself. For those who would like to check out the phone personally, it’s available via all Huawei authorised stores, major telco partners (M1, Singtel, StarHub), authorised retailers, and Huawei official online storefronts like Lazada and Shopee.

The Huawei P50 Pro doesn't lose points for the same reasons most other phones do: underwhelming cameras, a bad display or poor performance – for the most part, those traits are all excellent here. The struggles it faces are, at this point, well-documented and uniquely Huawei; caused by circumstances beyond the reach of the company's influence but ones that deeply affect products like the P50 Pro. As such, it's these very circumstances – not any form of ineptitude – that really stop the Huawei P50 Pro from being an otherwise obvious recommendation. In 2022, a flagship based on the previous generation's hardware, underpinned by the previous version of Android (with no clear update roadmap), a painfully high price – despite the lack of expected flagship features like 5G – and the ongoing absence of Google integration (that so many users internationally rely upon), all undermine the hard work that Huawei has clearly poured into the P50 Pro, and that's a real shame.

You’d imagine that Huawei’s challenging circumstances were enough to drive itself towards making a better phone that convinces the masses of its mobile superiority and technology. But, the company chose the darker path of riddling its amazing device with ads or recommendations, on top of packing your display so full of downloadables you don’t care for or need. Folks who play with second-rate Android emulators on PC would know how frustrating such an experience is, and it’s not something we’ve expected coming out of Huawei. We’ve judged the P50 Pro as a 2021 flagship phone despite arriving in early 2022. So, a lot of words. What conclusion can be drawn from the results of testing the Huawei P50 Pro? Actually, I can repeat what I said at the very beginning — this is a 100% flagship. Gorgeous materials, IP68 protection, perfect build quality, unusual design, amazing screen in all respects (resolution, frequency, no PWM, color reproduction), impressive cameras (very clear photos, even in the dark), clear sound, good performance, beautiful and comfortable EMUI shell. You can, of course, find fault with the processor, which in 2022 is no longer at the cutting edge of technology and likes to heat up, but the phone appeared in Europe with a six-month delay.

Huawei remains an industry leader when it comes to imaging hardware and software, and the P50 Pro leaves little doubt as to that. If you’re exclusively after one of the best camera phones around, the P50 Pro is certainly up there as a contender. Much of the phone’s other hardware is decent too, provided you can overlook the slightly older processor, middling battery life, and lack of 5G networking. Unfortunately, hardware alone does not make for a best-in-class smartphone experience. EMUI 12 has more than its share of flaws. The lack of Google’s ecosystem and an old version of Android will still be an issue for most but the problems have extended to Huawei’s own apps and ecosystem too. As such, it’s a very difficult phone to recommend. Huawei’s smartphone business is clearly in a tough spot, with both software and chipset hardware clearly not where the company or its customers would like it to be. I would be prepared to cut the phone some slack on the 5G downgrade, which you might be able to overlook in exchange for the excellent camera.

So, what’s the bottom line? Is the Huawei P50 Pro worthy? I’d say so, yes, but it all depends. The Huawei P50 Pro has an excellent design, great-sounding speakers, vivid and rich display, and great performance. On top of that, it has a top-of-the-line camera setup, amongst the best in the market. There’s a big caveat here, no Google services. That is a requirement for the vast majority of users, but if you’re not one of them, and can live without Google apps, this phone is a great choice, there’s no doubt about it.

For those of us outside the US, Huawei has maintained its presence in a number of markets in which it has grown its sales over the last decade. Even without access to Google Services or TSMC, the company has been producing hardware and smartphones as it pivots to a new strategy. To lead off in 2022, that strategy starts with the Huawei P50 Pro, the next generation of flagship photography camera. The P series from Huawei has often been the lead device for new cameras and new features to attract creators, and the model we have today is a new twist in the Huawei story: our model comes with a Qualcomm flagship Snapdragon chip inside.

Huawei is yet again in a pretty tough spot, and I’m not sure what the company can really do to overcome the hurdles that it faces in software. This is the first Huawei phone I’ve ever been able to use as an actual daily driver since the sanctions, and while it was doable, it’s not convenient. If you don’t use a lot of Google services or even want to move away from Google then the Huawei P50 Pro might even be a convenient purchase, but otherwise, it’s hard to recommend this device. The Huawei P50 Pro is a fantastic smartphone in its own right, and with Google services, I could only imagine it being one of the top phones of 2022. In its current state though, I’m not really in a position to recommend it to basically anyone. I can’t use it long-term as a daily driver for the reasons that I’ve already stated, and if you’re in any way like me — a western-based user who makes use of a ton of Google apps — then you’re likely going to be in the same boat. Having said all of that, I truly believe that this is the best phone the company has ever released since sanctions were imposed.

Huawei's own ecosystem with watches, laptops, headphones, speakers, TVs and tablets has grown immensely over the last couple of years, and that's its biggest ace when selling smartphones like the P50 Pro. If you own a laptop and/or a tablet, or maybe a wearable and/or a pair of wireless earbuds, there is a good chance you will like how these go with a Huawei smartphone. The integration is nearly Apple-level good, and that's something that sells devices. There are a lot of reasons why not to choose this or any Huawei phone. But there are also quite a few compelling arguments why you should do it - be it for creativity, for a change of scenery, for the great features and outstanding camera experience with unmatched creativity, or because you own another Huawei device. One thing is sure - if you do decide in favor of P50 Pro - you will probably like it as we did, despite its setbacks.

If you’re not big on apps and games, don’t mind being fed sensationalist stories in your newsfeed every now and then, and can handle elements that feel like a work in progress, the Huawei P50 Pro gets a lot very right. It sports one of the most reliable cameras around, delivers the best multi-device collaboration experiences outside Apple’s ecosystem, and it also looks and feels sleek – from screen to design. In regions with no widespread 5G, where Google isn’t as baked into the everyday of everyone, the P50 Pro would be a relatively easy phone to recommend. In the UK, however, in a 5G area, for a working professional relies on Google Docs, Meet and Sheets, despite its highlights, Huawei’s latest phone just probably won’t measure up.

The Huawei P50 Pro highlights what a loss the ongoing US trade ban has caused. Without Google Play Services here many won't get the experience they want due to a lack of certain apps - and Huawei's App Gallery / Petal Search can't solve everything (but, in many instances, can plug most gaps). However, in terms of hardware, the P50 Pro is one of the most advanced flagships on the market - particularly on the camera side, where it's mighty impressive - and that's still the case despite its international launch being delayed a number of months. With the asking price also set above the €1000 mark in Europe, it's also a lot of money to ask for a product that won't do everything a lot of people will want. Or at least, won't do easily. That's going to be a hard pill to swallow, further making it a phone that's hard to recommend for most people.

The burning question remains: can the Huawei P50 Pro manage to stand on its own two feet without having the sort of far-reaching, comprehensive software experience we’ve come to expect from a flagship handset in 2022? To that end, I do think that top-end hardware and componentry (as impressive as it may be) still isn’t quite enough to sell a smartphone, despite what Huawei would want you to believe. In every respect, the P50 Pro is as lavish as a four-figured flagship could possibly be, but yet again the lack of Google services pulls it back from the halls of greatness. It’s a shame, too, since if it wasn’t for this particular shortcoming, there’s no doubt that Huawei would have a proper Galaxy S22 rival on its hands.

There are plenty of competitors to the Huawei P50 Pro in its flagship price range. The phone delivers some of the best main camera shots we've witnessed from a phone, and its zoom shots are right up there with periscope stalwarts like the S21 Ultra or the Pixel 6 Pro. It also has one of the most color-credible displays we've tested and very fast charging abilities with the brick in the box, unlike its direct competitors. Contrary to popular opinion, the U.S. sanctions-induced lack of a next-gen modem or Google services aren't that much of a deal breaker on a daily basis one thinks, but they do alter the value-for-money proposition of the P50 Pro enough to warrant pausing on the buy trigger and wait on a price drop. Unless you really, really want those nice True-Chroma camera shots, that is.

It's no secret that the Achilles' heel of the Huawei P50 Pro, or any recent Huawei phone, is the lack of Google services. Sure, Huawei's AppGallery push means you'd hardly be left without enough options for apps that offer navigation, mobile banking, document editing or games. But still, tech-savvy users may find it hard to commit to an expensive device that lacks Google's software and service suite - especially with the sort of choice that the competition offers at the same price. And we are not even going to touch upon the topic of the missing 5G. What's more important is that the P50 Pro arrives with a considerable delay after its Chinese launch, meaning it arrives at a time when the competition is already getting ready to launch its new family of products with next-gen chipsets. We've just started our review process, but it seems that the Huawei P50 Pro is just like every other P flagship so far - well-executed, with an excellent screen, performance, battery, but most importantly - a multi-camera setup that offers a lot of creative freedom to creators.

The Huawei P50 Pro represents an unorthodox but highly polished offering with excellent build quality, good performance and long battery life that stands out from the crowd with a fantastic True-Chroma camera array that offers superb camera quality even in dim light conditions and with chart-topping zoom capabilities. This is tempered by the fact that it lacks 5G connectivity and the lack of Google apps though the former isn’t going to be a major factor in Malaysia for the next few years and the latter can be dealt with via their Gspace app. The Huawei P50 Pro is a well built phone with smooth performance and excellent cameras though the lack of 4G and Google mobile services (which can be circumvented somewhat) are points to consider.

So, finally, the price of RM4,199. Do I recommend you to go out right now and buy the Huawei P50 Pro? Not really. You need to know what you’re getting into. By that, I mean the argument of “not having Google Mobile Services” comes back up, alongside all the troubles that come along. Banking apps don’t work, McDonald’s app doesn’t work, Lalamove doesn’t work. Also, this is the only “flagship” smartphone that purposely deleted 5G support for no reason. I mean, we’ve already tested 5G here in Malaysia – it’s ready to be used right now. And hence, the conclusion to this review is simple – the Huawei P50 Pro is actually a decent phone – just crippled by its lack of apps.

Our Huawei P50 Pro review for the Philippines clearly tells us that it’s one of the best phones you can buy if you value mobile photography. As of press time, it’s the phone that’s currently sitting at the top of DXoMark’s benchmark list, which says a lot about the phone’s camera prowess. That being said, the P50 Pro still has the same peculiarities as Huawei’s other flagships post US trade ban: it doesn’t have access to GMS, and there’s no 5G on board. However, the pros definitely outweigh the cons, if priced correctly and you can see yourself navigating through its imperfections, the Huawei P50 Pro is still an amazing smartphone to have.

This is the status quo of Huawei mobile phones today. In fact, the number of shipments is no longer the most important thing for Huawei. Even if all the inventory is emptied, it may not be able to return to the previous market share, but if it can continue to maintain its voice, it has already won. In the long run, when the industry has entered a mature stage, the disadvantages of the head “players” retiring from the venue will inevitably outweigh the benefits. Regarding whether to start with Huawei P50 Pro, there is no need to force or blame others, just be rational and just follow your own ideas. With easily visible 1B colors, the P50 Pro stimulates every type of user. Still, you can appreciate it when it comes to the brilliant processor. Although there are two different varieties of chipset and processor are available. As the Huawei P50 Pro smartphone has a completely new HarmonyOS, you may face few issues to adjust, there may be many glitches and limitations. On the other hand, where all the features are worth mentioning, the smaller battery size and 4G bandwidth don’t have the charm of this phone. It is always recommended to double-check the specs whether you like it or not. However, we also have alternatives like the ZTE nubia Red Magic 6R smartphone.

In terms of the front camera, the specifications are very close to the Mate 40 Pro from last year. A 13 MP Sony IMX688 sensor is coupled with a f/2.4-aperture lens with an 18 mm-equivalent focal length. However, the new model adds a phase-detection autofocus (PDAF) system, making it the first Huawei front camera with that technology. Like previous Huawei cameras, the P50 Pro front camera also makes use of artificial intelligence to optimize image quality. On the video side of things, staggered HDR processing improves image quality in especially challenging lighting conditions and the stabilization system benefits from new slightly wider lenses and improved EIS (electronic image stabilization) which help with cropping. Let’s see how the Huawei P50 Pro front camera performs in DXOMARK’s Selfie tests.

The Huawei P50 Pro is the Chinese manufacturer’s latest P-series high-end smartphone. The camera setup combines a large-sensor primary camera with a 13 mm ultra-wide, a 90 mm tele, a monochrome sensor, and a multispectral color temperature sensor for optimizing white balance and color rendering. It also revives the concept of using a monochrome sensor alongside the primary sensor, something last seen in the P20 Pro from 2018. The monochrome sensor improves fine detail rendering and reduces noise, especially in low light. It also helps with depth estimation for the simulated bokeh effect. Let’s see how the camera performed in our DXOMARK Camera tests.

Qualcomm Adreno 660:
