No reference. The Pixel 2 XL is visually a high-end smartphone from 2017 and has a POLED display in the 2:1 format. Visually, the relation to the LG V30 cannot be denied, but it has taken a different path in terms of the camera. Furthermore, there is ample battery power.

Another annoyance I have with the software is the lack of manual tuning on how apps work with this elongated aspect ratio. The majority of Android apps are designed for 16:9 displays, but the extra height here means you’re going to run into some dodgy-looking black bars. The isn’t really an issue with apps, since most can dynamically shift to fill the screen. However, many of the games I’ve tried don’t fit the screen. Other 18:9 phones have got round this issue by letting you manually stretch apps to fit the whole screen; this isn’t something Google offers, however.

The Pixel 2 starts at $649.99 while the Pixel 2XL is $200 more and starts at $849. Both of these include 64GB of storage or you can opt and double the space for more memory. If you think you will burn through it because of photos and video the Pixel phones have always been sweet because you can do unlimited uploads in its original quality to Google Photos. Mix this with Verizon’s Unlimited plan and you have a winner. This will be good until 2020 so you have some time to snap away. Verizon has same pricing but tends to offer BOGOs, and other incentives with trade-ins if you catch them.

The Google Pixel 2 XL is the second iteration (and third or fourth smartphone depending how you look at it) of Google’s internally developed smartphones. While it’s nothing overly special or different, it is a solid Android smartphone with the added luxury of having stock Android and timely security updates straight from Google. It’s also nice to see Google implementing some features from other OEMs into the hardware and the Android operating system as well, but there are still many more useful features they can add.

On the other hand, the Pixel 2 XL is not a cheap phone. And for the amount of cash it requires, you may find that the few compromises it does pack are too much to swallow. It all comes down to what you value above all else: if you really can't live without the headphone jack, if you are very concerned about having the absolute best display there is, if you don't want to play the Bluetooth accessory connection lottery, if you hate putting a case on your phone and can't live with accidental touches due to the curve of the screen... then you'll probably be best served by one of the Pixel 2 XL's many competitors.

Between the two, the Pixel 2 takes the cake as it is a no frills Android smartphone, which offers the basics and does them really well, while it’s at it. There’s no tap to adapt for third-party apps because there’s no nonsensical taller display, you don’t have to pinch to zoom every time you play a video either. The bezels are thin, but the grip and usability is excellent. In short, it just works! And does everything brilliantly, be it the camera, battery, display and the software.

Keeping all that aside, the Pixel 2 XL is one powerful Android smartphone. It has an excellent camera and powerful processor. The Pixel 2 XL price starts at Rs 73,000 for the 64GB model and 128GB model comes at Rs 82,000. At this price, the biggest competition it faces is from Apple iPhone 8 Plus. Those who are Android devotees might like to go for the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 or the Galaxy S8. There's little to separate the Pixel 2 XL from competition - which isn't a surprise as it's always the case with most flagships. It will come down to why you want to buy a flagship. Google struggled with hardware with its Nexus devices, but it is trying to change that with big strategic investments, in the hopes that it can one day go toe-to-toe with Apple and Samsung. With all the learnings from its first two Pixel generations, perhaps the Pixel 3 might be the perfect Android device everyone hopes for (you know, third time's the charm). But that’s in the future, and today we are dealing with a phone that costs Rs. 73,000 and has seen more issues within a few weeks of its release than most phones see in their entire lifecycles. Granted, many of these issues can be fixed with software patches, and we’re sure Google is working on them around the clock, but the experience needs to be at a certain level right from the beginning.

Google’s foray into the hardware market is still in its infant stage, but it’s becoming a more impressive journey with each passing year. The Pixel 2, or at least the Pixel 2 XL has at the very least a small cloud over it thanks to the screen used but it seems to be hit and miss as to whether it’s an issue at all. Google has systems in place, including a 15-day return option to mitigate these issues so you can order, and return the phone if it does turn out to be an issue.

So, is the Pixel 2 XL the best Android phone right no? Nope, it’s too expensive and can’t match the competition in a number of key areas. Here’s hoping some of those issues can be corrected in future updates, and maybe we’ll be more positive come our long-term review.

But if you already own an original Pixel, look closely at your bank balance, and think about your priorities in life. To wit: The Pixel XL has been my daily driver for the last year, and I don’t think I’d splurge $849 on the latest model.

Finally, the Pixel 2 phones run Android 8.0.0 Oreo, with its own Pixel Launcher to set it apart, UI-wise, from other Oreo handsets. The most obvious departure from last year’s Pixels is the removal of the “G” search pill on the new-look homescreen, which now has a full-width Google Search bar (rounded corners!) sandwiched between the dock of icons and navigation keys at the bottom. I’m ambivalent about this change, but for those who outright reject it, there’s always third-party launchers. As before, you can long-press the home button to summon Google Assistant, long-press the circular app icons to bring up shortcut items, swipe right to get to the Google app, and swipe up from the bottom of the screen to reveal the app drawer. And if you’re adamant about one-handed use, you can configure the phones to bring down the notification panel when you swipe down on the fingerprint scanner.

It's the biggest reason I find the Pixel 2 XL (well, either Pixel, really) so attractive. There's no fluff and no bloat... just Google and its myriad of services. And if there's one thing Google does really well, it's services. It just happens to have hardware now to back it up.

In the end, both phones are very solid choices. We wish they had some welcome extras like microSD expansion or wireless charging, but these features aren't going to carry equal weight with every shopper, and we imagine that for a lot of smartphone users, both the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL will easily give them everything they need.

Is it the best Android phone around? Not quite. The Galaxy S8 - and indeed the bigger S8+ - still just about pips it based on its sheer desirability, and comes a close second with camera quality. The XL easily slots in behind it, though. Google is properly in the game now, and other manufacturers are going to have to watch out.

Over the past year, Google had trouble making enough Pixel phones to meet the demand for them. Pre-orders for the the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL have already led to a waitlist, though we hope that wait times will be better than last year. In any case, opting to get one will be well worth the wait.

The only question, really, is which size you should buy. The Pixel 2 XL is probably too expensive for many people, and its 6-inch display may actually be too big as well. The Pixel 2, with a very attainable price, offers excellent value for the money — it also has a better display and more manageable size. Unless you feel like you need the extra screen size or battery of the 2 XL, pick the Pixel 2. You'll love it.

There seems to be a duality in the Pixel 2 that goes beyond its two-tone finish. It is both impressive yet, at the same time, almost nondescript. It is familiar while also feeling a tad alien. It is similar enough to its predecessor to be recognizable as a Pixel yet changes enough that it feels like a completely different beast altogether.

Rather than build two identical Pixels this year, Google decided to make its new small smartphone a little more conservative. Make no mistake: the Pixel 2 is still an incredibly fast phone, and a clean build of Android 8.0 Oreo combined with Google's intelligent features make the device incredibly capable. And its camera? Just fantastic. Because of its more traditional design and smaller battery, though, the Pixel 2 doesn't make as strong an impression as the Pixel XL. Still, if you're looking for a first-rate Android phone that won't make your hands cramp, you'd do well to start your search here.

We had a short runway with the new Pixels before launch, but we're looking forward to spending more time with them in the months ahead. This does mean that Google will be exploring the offline channel as well, which would partially explain the nearly Rs. 20,000 premium in India compared to the US pricing. It is not that the fingerprint reader has moved or is positioned differently but instead it is no longer positioned underneath the glass panel. Which if nothing else does mean that users will be less likely to leave fingerprint marks on the glass when trying to use the fingerprint reader. Speaking of which, Google claims this is a new and redesigned fingerprint reader so you can expect even faster unlocking times and more accurate readings more often.
