Maybe. It really depends on what you want to prioritize. If you care about AI features and want the flexibility of years of updates, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold focuses a lot on those things. If you want the best camera array on a phone that folds, this $1,800 one isn’t it.

The Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold has nearly everything a Pixel user could want in a foldable, from the simplistic user experience to the reliable camera system to the seven years of software support. I'm a fan of the new, slimmer, and lighter design, which earns the title of being the thinnest foldable in the US. Under a $1,800 magnifying glass, however, it's hard not to nitpick all the ways Google could've made the phone better. Having the same (if not similar) camera system as the other Pixel "Pro" phones would be a start. For the best deal on the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, I'd consider Amazon or Best Buy, both of which may offer occasional discounts.

Most of the time, it feels as though companies just ignore the pleas of their customers. However, that's not the feeling that I get with the Pixel 9 Pro Fold. Odd name notwithstanding, this is about as close as it gets to being the perfect upgrade from its predecessor. There are a few qualms here and there, but I'm hoping that this is a sign that we can expect future foldable phones from Google.

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold is yet another sign that perhaps buying a first-gen product, especially from Google, isn't the wisest choice. The Pixel 9 Pro Fold, with its more polished and practical design, feels like a big leap over the original. For a device like a foldable phone that's already inherently clunkier than a regular mobile device, design improvements are more than just superficial aesthetic changes. Making foldable phones thinner and lighter, while expanding the sizes of their screens, makes them feel more natural and enjoyable to use. And for a device that you're buying mostly for the screen, that's important. Combine that with the Pixel 9 Pro Fold's capable cameras, and there's plenty to love about Google's second-gen foldable.

In terms of advancement over its predecessor, I’d argue the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold is more of a step up than any other foldable this year. The 8in main display is the largest around, impressively bright and wonderfully colour accurate, the design is sleeker and more comfortable in general use and performance is stronger across the board. The problem is the main competitors were already working from fairly solid standings, so their small upgrades result in phones that are still superior to Google’s latest effort. The Honor Magic V3 is ludicrously slim and lightweight, while still offering great performance and solid cameras, and the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 leads the class in performance and matches Google’s excellent seven years of software support.

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold is a crème de la crème smartphone that’s not made for everyone. I think its sticker price makes that clear, and Google isn’t shying away from the fact that this device is somewhat of an early experiment with foldables. Google has done a lot of things right with this second-generation foldable smartphone but has also left some things unchanged. All of this indicates that the Pixel 9 Pro Fold will evolve in the future; the hardware is there, and Google has demonstrated that well, but it just needs the right software implementation. Pros Cons Expensive Much more fragile and costlier to repair than a regular device No dust resistance Lack of Stylus support Heavier than normal phone Launches with Android 14 Lackluster UI

Google's neatly laid out software and segment-leading AI tricks may come to the 9 Pro Fold's rescue, which finds itself in the hands of Pixel fans who have been desperately waiting for the foldable to reach Indian shores. But its dated camera system desperately needs an upgrade and does not fit the “Pro” moniker that Google's chasing for its foldable. When it comes to practical features that matter to most consumers, like smooth software, good battery life, fast charging and quality cameras, it comes up horribly short of Vivo's X Fold 3 Pro (Review), making it an antithesis to this year's Pixel 9 Pro XL (Review), which was a big step in the right direction for Google's slab-style smartphones.

Google’s 2024 folding Android phone has a new aspect ratio, an even larger 8” inner OLED Super Actua flexible display, the new Tensor G4 processor with support for Gemini AI features and improved cameras. The 6.3” outer display and thickness are very similar to the (non-folding) Pixel 9 Pro, and that’s a good thing. It’s not awkwardly narrow like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6, nor overly wide like the first gen Pixel Fold. 5G, WiFi 7, 16GB RAM and biometrics are standard.

As I mentioned at the beginning of this review, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold is expensive. However, it’s hard not to love the device. The Pixel 9 Pro Fold is a huge upgrade compared to the original Pixel Fold. Though it lacks the Pixel 9 Pro’s cameras, with 16GB of RAM, a Tensor G4 chip that keeps it chugging along smoothly, Gemini and other AI features, and that beautiful 8-inch display, there aren’t many faults with the handset. During my review, I mentioned that there could be some screen bleeding issues. Honestly, I haven’t been able to replicate them, so it could have been a user error. The Pixel 9 Pro Fold is perfect for someone who wants the best folding phone on the Canadian market. These people tend to be power users who like to work from their handsets.

Coming from someone who has never been the biggest fan of foldables, I think the Pixel 9 Pro Fold is without a doubt a device to consider buying. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with this new foldable from Google, which I can’t believe I’m actually saying out loud. I think Google really nailed this idea that a foldable of this type should be a phone first and feels like a phone in the hand when folded up, with a normal shape and resolution. That lets you use the device as you would a normal phone, but then there’s this amazing 8-inch tablet waiting for you at any moment. And that 8-inch tablet is a good tablet that showcases the major strides Google has made with Android for bigger screens, making way for simple multitasking, consuming media, editing photos, and doing anything that may require (or look better) on a larger display.

After using it for over two weeks, I feel the Pixel 9 Pro Fold is one of the most innovative and fun phones out there. It is also, for a foldable phone, incredibly practical and usable. Its design is 100 per cent premium and great-looking. Its screens are fantastic, software and features unique and top class, and camera system capable. But I also feel that like other good foldable phones out there, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold remains a marquee product, whose value is not in what it lets people do but in its exclusivity and uniqueness. That crease in the inner screen stops the perfectionist in me from fully enjoying the Pixel 9 Pro Fold. And that also holds me back from recommending it whole-heartedly.

The Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold offers a unique foldable experience with its thin, lightweight design, premium build, excellent display quality, and long-lasting battery. However, while it excels in hardware design, it falters in software and camera performance compared to other foldables in the market, especially those from Samsung and other Chinese manufacturers. I’m in love with the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold. Closed, it’s as close as I need to a “normal” phone’s shape and dimensions, and opened up, it’s a video and entertainment powerhouse. The build quality and design are superb, far better than any previous Pixel phone, and it feels substantial in your hand. It’s an expensive smartphone, but importantly, it also looks and feels like one. The software is a delight to use. The camera is versatile, fun, and takes great photos in almost all situations — plus, there’s a wealth of editing tools that are a joy to play with on the open screen. I’ve mostly forgotten that it’s a big-screen folding smartphone, by which I mean it has overcome many of the ergonomic issues that earlier models suffered from.

The Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold brings a solid experience without any major issues and holds its own in a market with limited competition. While it may not lead the pack in every area, it’s certainly a step forward compared to its predecessor. The camera performance, though competent, doesn't quite reach the heights of some competitors. Charging speeds could be faster, and the chipset, while reliable, isn't quite on par with the other top-tier devices. The design is a bit polarizing as well with the contrast strip stretching the hinge and the cover display. However, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold has several standout features. It offers an impressive 7 years of Android OS updates, one of the largest displays on the market, and both the main and cover screens are brilliantly bright.

Despite some hardware quirks, Google’s latest attempt in the foldable segment is commendable. With a bigger display, more years of OS updates, and some new AI features, it seems to be heading in the right direction. It’s safe to say that I am already excited about the next Pixel Fold iteration whenever Google decides to launch that. Based on our comparisons and my overall experience, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold excels in areas such as display, design, and software. The camera performance is also good. However, Google must consider thoughtful pricing, not just for the latest foldable, but across its products, especially in a country where rivals like Samsung and Apple have a proven record in the ultra-premium segment.

I was initially cynical about the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold, simply because the first-generation Fold it upgrades was far from a success story. But it took little time into my two-weeks of testing to conclude that Google's latest is a folding phone revelation – a total rethink and redesign that positions it among the family of Google's best Pixel phones. While a foldable still won't be for everyone, if one is on your shopping list then the clear benefit of the biggest and brightest folding display in the business, plus a Pixel 9 Pro XL-like exterior one, makes the Pixel 9 Pro Fold an obvious winner.

I’ve been clear about how much I like the Galaxy Z Fold 6 ($1899.99 at Samsung) — that’s probably still the phone I’d use if I had to stick with one book-style phone for the long haul. I chalk that up to its more advanced multitasking, seamless stylus input, and Samsung’s excellent accessories. That said, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold has a well-designed suite of foldable features. You can get more done on the Pixel 9 Pro Fold than on a flat phone, even if it’s not the most feature-packed foldable. As usual for this particular form factor, the price is the biggest problem. Foldable phones, especially those that fold out into tablets, are complicated feats of engineering, and maybe that means they won’t ever get cheaper. And in that case, most people won’t even consider buying one.

There are two ways of looking at the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, depending on which part of its name you focus on. If you focus on the Fold, you're in for a great time. Google has done an excellent job catching up with Samsung and OnePlus, even surpassing them in some crucial ways. I did not have a particularly good time using the original Pixel Fold as my daily driver, but the Pixel 9 Pro Fold might've convinced me I'm a foldable fan after all. However, if you focus on the rest of its name — Pixel 9 Pro — you might be disappointed. I think Google made a pretty big branding mistake trying to fold this into the rest of its smartphone lineup. There's a reason Samsung keeps the Galaxy Z-series separate from the Galaxy S-series: expectations.

So, are we really missing out since the phone isn’t coming to Malaysia? Not really. As it is, there’s plenty of choices when it comes to foldable smartphones in the local market, with some offering more features than Google’s own. On the flip side, the company has promised to bring the device’s successor to Malaysia, which would hopefully bring substantial upgrades along with it. The Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold is the best folding phone-tablet hybrid design yet and is a massive leap over its predecessor. It is so close to the size and shape of a regular phone it makes using it for messaging and other normal things when closed feel so natural you can easily forget the Pixel opens at all, which isn’t the case with all other rivals. Opening it reveals the great-looking inside screen, which is super bright for easier outdoor use. Its square shape makes it ideal for using two apps side by side, which is particularly handy when using AI apps alongside a web browser or messaging app. The fingerprint scanner in the power button and 2D face unlock are fast and accurate. The battery life is solid, and it feels snappy in operation.

And I get it: that’s why that screen is there. But if I’m going to continually be using the (very usable) outer display, what is the point of carrying around this mini tablet all the time at this $1799 price point? For me, I couldn’t quite get there, and I’ll be finishing the last part of my review process with my SIM card back in the Pixel 9 Pro XL. It does make me wonder if this is exactly why Samsung has stuck with the ultra-narrow outer display for so long. With that phone, it wasn’t exactly comfortable to hold with one hand while reclined, but it was 100% doable. And when I wanted a bit more width to the screen, I could just rotate it. Having a true portrait and landscape view is a good thing with many apps, and after all the hate and ridicule Samsung gets for staying with that form factor for a 6th edition, I’m starting to think they might be onto something.

It’s taken five years, but the book-type folding phone has finally gotten there. The biggest screen you can put in your pocket now collapses into something so close to the size and weight of a normal phone that you might find yourself forgetting that it even opens at all – and in a refreshing change of pace, you don’t need to import it from overseas. The Pixel 9 Pro Fold is the most capable Pixel Google has ever made, and one of the biggest generation-to-generation upgrades the smartphone world has ever seen … so why aren’t I more excited by it? Well, because it still compromises in two of the biggest categories that have kept foldables out of reach of creators and normals alike: the camera, and (to a much greater extent) the cost.

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold makes folding phones make sense to me. It’s more like a normal phone than ever, but it’s also not completely like using a normal phone. By opting for a phone that folds, you’re still making tradeoffs, particularly in the camera hardware. The phone’s long-term durability is also an unknown — literally no one has owned a Pixel folding phone for more than a year at this point. Foldable ownership isn’t for the faint of heart. But the Pixel 9 Pro Fold is the most rewarding folding phone I’ve ever used. The Pixel 9 Pro Fold is extremely expensive at $1,799, but if I were in the market for a book-style foldable, I would pick it over the Galaxy Z Fold 6 because I appreciate its wider cover display, which allows me to use the device like a normal smartphone. This fulfills the dream of having a tiny tablet in my pocket at all times, and I prefer that over a slightly more comfortable-to-use internal folding screen. Still, there are compromises, including its hefty weight and camera specs that lag behind the top-tier Pixel 9 Pro series. Does the Pixel 9 Pro Fold still snap excellent photos? Definitely. But they aren't as good as what the Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL are capable of taking. However, if the idea of carrying both a smartphone and a sizable tablet around with you at all times is appealing, there's a lot to like about Google's Pixel 9 Pro Fold.

The 9 Pro Fold is going way beyond what the original ever offered me, but I’m still curious to see how it’s going to hold up with a bit more time. And I suppose this solid battery life shouldn’t be a total shock either, given the Pixel 9 Pro XL is also such a big upgrade in this department. I was really taken with the design of the Google Pixel Fold, and was slightly irked at first that that blueprint had been ditched for something more akin to the OnePlus Open. After a few days of use, it all makes sense. As unique as its predecessor was, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold is a welcome reboot that is so much nicer to use for extended periods. Both screens are (mostly) great, the build is thinner and lighter and everything just feels more high-end. I don’t feel comfortable giving the 9 Pro Fold a score yet, but while my enjoyment will be a pretty high score out of 10, battery life might lower the overall score of the foldable. Despite this, the 9 Pro Fold is a significant upgrade from the Pixel Fold, and I’ll find it hard to switch phones after this.

The Google Pixel 9 Pro makes Google's foldable Android experience feel professional. While the average smartphone user probably won't find enough added value in the foldable display to pay the premium, the device does deliver on what it promises. Google's made the foldable I wished they'd made with the first Fold — now it's just about the most delightful smartphone I've ever used... or it will be, once I find some sort of case to keep it safe from dust and debris. While the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold feels much more robust than its predecessor, it's still using a foldable display — and there is no foldable display that's impervious to the occasional rogue rock in the pocket.

The first Pixel fold wasn’t quite a “let’s pretend it never existed” failure, but it felt rushed in ways I just didn’t expect from Google. This new, renamed successor is the course correction I was hoping for. The Pixel 9 Pro Fold is a giant leap forward on the hardware front, with design, dimensions and displays to challenge the class leaders. Photography is really rather good, performance is consistently high, and the battery does genuinely last all day – though it isn’t the outright best foldable in any of those categories. And while the new Pixel-specific software additions are great and the Gemini AI upgrades are super slick, I feel Google could do more on the multitasking front. For big-screen entertainment in a phone form factor, though, this is a superb option for Western audiences that aren’t exactly overwhelmed with foldable choice.

The Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold did very well in the DXOMARK Camera tests, particularly in terms of photo capture, and is the best device with a folding form factor in our ranking to date. Compared to its predecessor Pixel Fold, the new model comes with a new ultra-wide camera with a shorter focal length, allowing you to squeeze more scene into the frame. There is also a new macro mode for close-up photography. Our experts were particularly impressed by the Pixel 9 Pro Fold’s fast and accurate autofocus, the good exposure across all light conditions and the nice colors. Still images are now captured in HDR format by default, providing enhanced contrast and color when viewed on a compatible HDR display.

Seriously, this is exactly what the original Google Fold should’ve been from the start because the Pixel 9 Pro Fold is much more polished in every way. Its new redesign makes it look and feel like a more modern foldable, but I was expecting so much more to justify its $1,799 cost. All of the new AI features certainly elevate its worth, but it would’ve been much more satisfying to see it getting more exclusive features — just to give it a bit of distinction over the slate Pixel 9 Pro models. I’m also disappointed that the camera upgrades are minimal at best and how the overall software experience doesn’t change all that much functionally.

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold is my favorite new foldable phone, and it’s all about the way it looks and feels. It looks like a normal phone, it feels thin and not bulky, and it’s incredibly fun, whether I keep it open or closed. The AI features are powerful – maybe even too powerful – and the huge inner screen is the best canvas for the Pixel Studio image generator or the Reimagine photo editing. It falls short of the flat Pixel 9 Pro in many ways, but it makes up the difference when you open up the tablet hidden in your phone.

Last year, the Pixel Fold phone got a limited release. Besides, it isn’t easy to purchase this foldable phone from any third-party e-commerce site. Anyway, the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold has a bright future ahead. We are impressed with the extraordinary performance attributes. Innovation-wise, this foldable phone has exclusive things to offer. From advanced sensors to higher-performance hardware, everything about this phone is incredible.

The Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold extremely well-balanced display performance in readability, color, video, and touch attributes puts it among the best performers in our global ranking. Thanks to the device’s very bright and uniform screen, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold achieved a very high readability score for a foldable. The screen reached a peak luminance of 2,585 cd/m², among the highest measured today for a foldable display, and a bit higher than the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6’s peak luminance of 2,564 cd/m². The Pixel 9 Pro Fold’s better readability was particularly noticeable in its rendering of skin tones in bright sunlight conditions, when compared with its competitors. When viewing the main screen at an angle, the display’s loss of luminance was minor.

This is the biggest batch of Pixel products Google has ever graced the world with – and contained within it is one of the biggest year-over-year upgrades the company has ever shipped. The Pixel 9 Pro Fold combines the form factor of the OnePlus Open with the addictive intelligence of the Pixel to produce a sequel that eclipses last year’s Pixel Fold in almost every way. And alongside, just as you no longer have to settle for a squat foldable, nor need you make do with a miniature wearable: the Pixel Watch 3 now comes in 41- and 45mm options boasting slimmer bezels, smarter bio-tracking … and stretchy bands! (Okay the bands aren't new; I just wanted to include that fun video clip.) I’ve spent a few hours with these two biggest upgrades to the Pixel lineup … and to help put all the others into context, I flew out to San Francisco to sit down with Google’s Senior Vice President of Platforms & Devices, Rick Osterloh and Design Director Claude Zellweger at Made By Google 2024!

The iPad Pro 2024 is an exceptional tablet. Its vivid OLED display is a marvel to behold and the new thin and light design makes it more portable than ever. I’m also a fan of its speedy M4-powered performance and astonishing battery life. Sure, its peripherals are expensive, but as a device, the iPad Pro has everything you could ever want from a tablet. The only loose thread is the iPad Pro’s AI capabilities. This has been a sticking point for me whenever I review an “AI” computer since there just aren’t many applications that take advantage of a chip's NPU (Neural Processing Unit) in any appreciable way. Apple says the M4 and its onboard Neural Engine NPU is an “absolute powerhouse for AI,” but I’ve yet to see that in the beta for iPadOS 18. Even if the iPad Pro never becomes an "AI powerhouse," it’s still an incredible tablet for people who want a powerful slate with a gorgeous OLED display. The iPad Pro has set a standard for all premium tablets to follow.

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold, the follow-up to Google's first foldable phone, has arrived. And as sequels go, this one could be quite good. Unveiled at the Made by Google event alongside the Pixel 9, 9 Pro and 9 Pro XL, the new book-style foldable has been overhauled in nearly every way, including its name. Of all the companies releasing foldables, Google has the trickiest path to navigate. The 9 Pro Fold has to address and improve on the original Fold's numerous shortcomings while being competitive with Samsung, OnePlus, Honor and Xiaomi. And from what Google showed me, I think it has a good chance of doing both.

While I’ve only had a short time with it thus far, I really like what Google is doing with the Pixel 9 Pro Fold — you know, aside from its clunky new name. In a lot of ways, Google is delivering what I wanted Samsung to do for the Z line. The Pro Fold is thinner than Z Fold 6 while also having a bigger main screen. And its cameras should be better too. Oh, and priced at $1,800, it costs $100 less than the Z Fold 6 too.

Finally, Google said its Pixel Buds Pro 2 were lighter and 27 per cent smaller than the previous model, but also performed better, lasted longer and fit securely in more differently shaped ears. The buds have a round design with a stabiliser fin that you can rotate to lock them in place in your ear. Thanks to the A1 chip, Google said noise cancellation is improved, with a larger spectrum of external sound silenced, and twice as much sound in the mid-band frequencies being cancelled. They buds start at $379 and will be released on September 26.

The Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold renders the original Fold a prototype at best. The aspect ratio that didn't work for some popular apps like Instagram, too-large black bezel around the main screen (all to accommodate the selfie camera), and the phone's inability to lie completely flat when unfolded are mercifully gone. Google's new Fold is taller, much thinner, and noticeably lighter than its first attempt. Where the Pixel Fold reminded me – and not necessarily in a good way – of Microsoft's failed Duo device, the new Pixel 9 Pro Fold reminds me of a Pixel 8 flagship. In fact, the 6.3-inch cover screen is a duplicate of the one you'll find on the new Google Pixel 9.

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold price starts at $2,399, which is crazy expensive. Other foldables, like the OnePlus Open, cost $2,299 outright, and the Z Fold 6, on the other hand, is priced at $2,564 CAD, meaning the 9 Pro Fold sits directly in the middle. If you compare the 9 Pro Fold to the other foldables on the Canadian market, its $2,399 price tag doesn’t seem so bad. Still, it’s a lot of money to stomach, so keep an eye on MobileSyrup to see whether the Pixel 9 Pro Fold is worth the money.

There are certainly reasons to be concerned about Google’s second-generation folding phone, not least the lack of hardware upgrade when it comes to the cameras. However, Google appears to have improved the Fold where it needed to be improved. It’s tougher and slimmer than before with a larger inner display. It’s packed with new AI features, including improvements to the HDR capture, which should boost image quality even if the hardware can’t. If these can combine with the new Tensor G4 chip to boost performance and battery life, Google might have a contender on its hands. If only the price was a little lower.

Google's Pixel 9 Pro Fold is launching on August 13 and ahead of my unboxing and review, here's a look at those leaked specs and Gemini features. The Pixel 9 Pro Fold boasts a few upgrades vs the first Fold phone, including Tensor G4 performance and a slimmer design. However, will the camera tech and battery life be improved at all? And is it a solid rival to the Samsung Galaxy Fold 6? Well, most of this Google foldable's official specs have gone well beyond rumour now, so there's not many surprises left for launch day. We know that the Pixel 9 Pro Fold will sport different camera hardware to the other 9 series phones.
