The Fairphone 5 is not a superlative smartphone, but the company is right to question the ethics of the industry and produce a fairly made, repairable phone. Software support promised till 2033 and possibly beyond is proof other manufacturers are being wasteful.

I would have given the Fairphone 5 a 4.5/5 rating if its battery had been better. The improvements over the Fairphone 4 are undeniable. The screen is better. The camera module has been improved. Performance has increased, and the modularity is even greater now. Only its weak battery life caused it to shed some points, as does the uncertainty about its SoC's ability to remain competitive 8 years down the road. Despite this, I'm going to use it very seriously as a daily driver, and I'm also considering installing Murena's /e/OS for a while, just to push the Zadist 3.0 delirium to the limit. I really want to see if my user experience will be seriously undermined by a “limited” spec sheet for a $700 smartphone or not.

The Fairphone 5 is a premium step up for the eco-friendly smartphone maker, with an improved main camera, a more modern design and a quicker chipset compared to its predecessor. That’s in addition to all the usual Fairphone charm, like its sturdy build, easily repairable design and impressive software update promise. However, the price hike accompanying this premium shift could put off some buyers, and several recurring Fairphone issues return, too.

Fairphone 5’s overall battery performance landed in the bottom half of our database, despite showing an impressive charging efficiency. Powered by a 4200 mAh battery, the device’s autonomy lasted more than a day and half after being used moderately, a result that was at the lower end of our database. When evaluated in individual test cases, the Fairphone 5 was behind most other devices in our database. But its autonomy was relatively decent when idling with the screen off, or when streaming music or video in 4G and music streaming, compared to other test cases. In outdoor testing, the Fairphone 5’s autonomy put in a commendable performance in the calling use case, even though it still ranked toward the bottom half of our database. Other outdoor use cases were also behind other devices’ performances.

Fairphone’s latest smartphone is a big jump over the Fairphone 4, and has an approach to the materials it’s made from, its repairability and its software support that’s refreshing for an industry that often treats these high-tech pocket marvels as disposable items. However, there’s a huge question over whether it does enough to attract buyers to a phone that doesn’t otherwise stand out from other, often cheaper, mid-range offerings.

The Fairphone 5 is a special phone. It shows the industry how repairable and fairly sourced handsets can be created without compromising too much on design and only a little bit on price. At the same time, these are exactly the points that make it hard to recommend for many people. When you buy the Fairphone, you pay a high price for a phone that should last you for a long time, all while it’s unclear how well the hardware will hold up over the next eight years. For our planet and for the sake of social responsibility, the Fairphone 5 is still the best smartphone choice you can make. You'll just have to consider how committed to the cause you really are before you pull the trigger on your purchase.

Hold the phone still while taking photos, and it’s possible to get shots that are sharp, clear, and colorful, but the Fairphone 5 can struggle to deal with less ideal shooting situations. If light drops, then detail quickly drops with it, and despite the optical image stabilization, I ended up with several blurry shots where I’d clearly not made enough of an effort to hold the camera still. In low light, the phone produces superficially nice shots, but peer a little closer, and it looks like this is the work of aggressive processing, with a lot of fine detail smoothed out and colors artificially boosted. And despite offering the same 50 megapixels of resolution, shots from the phone’s ultrawide camera end up lacking in detail. But the most overprocessed shots I got out of the Fairphone 5 came from its 50-megapixel selfie camera, which almost had me thinking I had some kind of AI or beautification mode turned on.

Yes, I agree that the Fairphone 5 isn't worth its €699 price tag in terms of sheer specifications-to-price ratio.

The Fairphone 5 doesn't surprise or stand out with anything except its sustainable and easy-to-repair design. The 5-year support for major Android versions and 8-year security support are also nice bonuses, especially for enterprise purposes. Moreover, since it's easy to repair, ownership costs go down rapidly for a small business or a big company that needs to maintain tens or hundreds of office smartphones. But for anyone in the market for a new smartphone in the given price range, the Fairphone 5 may not be the best choice. It's cool to have a removable back cover and swap out your battery on the fly, yet having a nice set of cameras, bright and HDR-compliant display, long battery life and fast charging is cooler.

The Fairphone 5’s display experience showed improvement in some areas over its predecessor, the Fairphone 4, which was released two years ago. The main difference is that the Fairphone 5 is now equipped with a higher-resolution OLED screen as opposed to the LCD screen on the Fairphone 4. The device’s screen brightness was well-managed in indoor as well as outdoor conditions, allowing for better readability. When testing touch, the Fairphone 5’s entire screen, notably the edges of the display, responded accurately to the touch, except when it came to gaming. In addition, the gaming experience was affected by many frame drops and aliasing. The area in which the Fairphone 5 fell significantly short was in the video-watching experience. The screen lacked brightness when watching HDR10 videos, and as a result, dark tones showed no details. In addition, the screen displayed a green color cast.

Fairphone’s devices are designed with longevity, reduction of e-waste, fairer sourcing of materials and the welfare of workers in mind. The latest model Fairphone 5 5G comes with only slightly improved camera specifications but major improvements in the software department when compared to its predecessor Fairphone 4. As a result, the Fairphone 5 5G outperformed the 4 by almost 40 points in the DXOMARK Camera tests. The improvements were most noticeable in photo and video, where the new device performed better across most test categories, including exposure, color, texture, noise, artifacts, and video stabilization. Thanks to good detail and well-controlled image noise, the camera did well in bright light conditions, making it a good option for landscape photography and similar photographic genres. In addition, photos and videos were generally exposed nicely.

If you’re going to buy the Fairphone 5, you should be doing so with the intention of keeping it for many years, and far longer than you may consider doing with a different phone. Otherwise, you’re not taking advantage of all of Fairphone’s efforts or exploiting its main selling point. If you’re willing to do this, the good news is the Fairphone 5 looks, feels, and performs like a phone you’ll want to use for a while, but only if you don’t care about the camera and buy a second battery. The camera is a problem. Everything aside from the main and selfie camera is bad, with the wide-angle being one of the worst I’ve seen in a while. And if it’s rubbish today, it’ll be really rubbish in a few years. But the Fairphone 5 isn’t being sold as a camera superstar, and its appeal lies elsewhere, so it’s unfair to really judge it harshly.

The other point to consider before buying is that I can only assess the phone today. I know from experience that many other current smartphones, especially expensive flagships, will operate in a similar way and be just as capable two or three years into ownership. It’s extremely hard to say if the Fairphone 5 will still be as good (camera aside) as it is today, that all the promised software updates will arrive, and if the device will still satisfy your mobile requirements in eight or even 10 years’ time. But this is the time frame Fairphone expects (hopes?) you to commit to after buying it. Whether you’re prepared to will ultimately come down to your own personal feelings, but based on using it in 2023, the Fairphone 5 is a good everyday smartphone provided you’re not a photographer, and it should represent incredible value for money if you keep it for years.

Fairphone continues its worthy goal of making a more environmentally conscious phone for the average shopper. While not as powerful as a Pixel or as sleek as any Samsung, the outstanding repairability and promise of lengthy software support make it a whole lot more sustainable than any rival. It’s not a total tech minnow either, with clean looks, respectable performance and a sharp screen to justify the dent it’ll leave in your wallet. At a not-insubstantial £649 (there’s no word on a US release just yet) you do pay a premium for a clean eco-conscience, and those cameras are merely OK – but we still feel there’s enough here to convince plenty of people to buy into Fairphone’s commendable philosophy.

The Fairphone 5 is another big step forward in addressing the waste of the smartphone industry, with the Dutch outfit showing other manufacturers that long-term support is possible. Up to 10 years of software updates is simply unheard of, gaining it an extra star. And the Fairphone is simple enough to repair that the hardware should be able to last just as long with an occasional quick and cheap battery swap. It also comes with a five-year warranty and is made with as many recycled and ethically sourced materials as possible. Other than a slightly bulkier design and plastic back, it doesn’t look out of the ordinary. My main worry is how the chip at the heart of the Fairphone will fare: something that is fine now may be achingly slow in a decade. Only time will tell. The camera is also a weak point.

Fairphone 5 is a step forward in modern looks for the sustainability-focused brands but it isn’t all rosy. However, its repairability and replaceability features are more versatile and inviting than ever for those who want a phone that can be with them a long time. Fairphone thinks you’ll still be using this in 2031, with 8-year software support being one of this phone’s more attention-grabbing features.

The Fairphone 5 is a really hard one to judge. If I was being totally dispassionate, on the hardware front it's overpriced for what you're getting compared to the competition, with slightly more middling cameras and a merely okay camera. That it's had its price hiked even further over the Fairphone 4 makes this even more the case, which is a shame. That's so far from the whole story, though - Fairphone is presenting a different consumer offering, one that leaves you with a way, way cleaner conscience and still offers most of what you expect from a good phone nowadays. The work it's done to ensure that its supply chain is cleaner and fairer is laudable, and if you're searching for a way to get some modern tech without contributing to depressing norms, then this is a great choice, and one that truly puts your money where your mouth is.

Fairphone is not a company focused on the latest and greatest smartphone specs. Instead, it is known for producing one of the most environmentally friendly phones on the market. The Fairphone 5 is built to last as long as possible. While some may view it as more of an entry-level phone with a mid-range price tag, we know that sustainability comes at a price, and paying it might not be a bad idea in the long run. Fairphone proudly states that 70 percent of the materials used to make the Fairphone 5 are either recycled or sourced through ethical mining. So, if you're a nature enthusiast and desire a phone with replaceable components like screen, battery, camera modules, loudspeakers, and USB-C port, it might be worth taking a second look at this more eco-friendly option.

The Fairphone 5 can’t, and maybe shouldn’t, be compared directly to other Android phones that cost about as much as its not-insubstantial £649. It’s not quite as sleek or powerful as a Pixel 7, is a lot chunkier than a Samsung Galaxy S23. But this isn’t a total tech minnow either, with quality Sony camera sensors, and a Qualcomm processor, even if it is a mid-tier one we’ve never used in a phone before. You have to take the whole picture into account: it’s better for the environment, and Fairphone says its production methods do their best to mitigate the other ethical issues involved in smartphone manufacture. It’s not hard to picture plenty of people buying into the Fairphone 5 idea.

During my brief time with the Fairphone 5, I couldn’t help but think that this is exactly what the company’s audience wants. It’s a well-designed, easily repairable, fully-featured Android smartphone that keeps the environment in mind and fairly supports the people who created it. There’s even stock Android onboard! It’s everything the Fairphone 4 was, but better in tangible and vital ways. The problem, of course, is how small Fairphone’s audience is. I asked a Fairphone rep about whether or not he thinks current Fairphone 4 users will upgrade to this (which would, of course, kind of go against the whole idea of owning a Fairphone). The rep said the company doesn’t design phones with current users in mind. It focuses instead on enticing new users who might not be on board with buying a phone in 2023 that was launched in 2021 (and looks like it came from the 2017 design room).

Sustainable phone-maker Fairphone wants its new Fairphone 5 to save the planet. From its recycled materials, fair-trade components, easy repairability and epic security support, Fairphone has worked hard to minimize the environmental impact of its newest socially conscious phone. It's a noble cause and while I enthusiastically applaud the work that Fairphone has done here, as a phone, the Fairphone 5 itself is a bit of a letdown. The battery life and the cameras are the two biggest problems here, with disappointing results from both. But that's made worse by a relatively high £620 price that puts it at least £200 more expensive than the Google Pixel 7A. And the Pixel 7A outperforms the Fairphone 5 in several ways. The Fairphone 5 is due to hit shelves in the UK and Europe in mid-September, but a US launch isn't on the cards, and its website doesn't ship to the US or Australia. (Its European price, 699 euros, converts to around $765 or AU$1,175.)
