For such a small laptop, the M1330 also packs in a surprisingly good screen. It’s one of the best small panels we’ve seen in the Labs this month, offering accurate colours and fine detail. It’s this, coupled with the M1330’s numerous other qualities – power, portability, battery life and build quality – that make the Dell an ideal portable laptop with features that trump many more luxurious models this month. Add in the tempting price, and it’s clear that it’s well worth its Recommended award.

If you're after a small laptop, but are willing to sacrifice slightly on portability to get better performance and a larger screen, then the Dell XPS M1330 is a great option. With an asking price under £800 it also represents good value for money too.

So let’s review: top-notch screen, keyboard, performance, design, portability, and features, all for under $2,000. Sure, it’s not as thin as the MacBook Air or ThinkPad X300, but the XPS M1330 has more features than the former and a much lower price than the latter. This is the ultimate sweet-spot notebook for consumers.

We recently reviewed the largest system in Dell's XPS range, the huge desktop 720 H2C. Now meet the smallest; the stylish M1330, Dell's latest ultraportable notebook which replaces the XPS M1210. Just calling it stylish is really doing it an injustice, as it's Dells most desirable notebook to date. Stylish and feature-rich, the XPS M1330 is Dell's best ultraportable to date. No, make that the best 13.3-inch notebook you can currently buy that doesn't have an apple as a logo.

Although XPS fans may lament the death of the brand as an indicator of single-minded gaming machines, the introduction of the XPS M1330 is a welcome one. This stylish laptop shows you can indeed have your cake and happily devour it, offering a great compromise between performance, features and portability. Only those seeking the very smallest and lightest of laptops will find problems with the Dell, as it’s definitely at the larger end of the ultra-portable market. It’s because of this, however, that it can offer such a comprehensive specification. What’s more, spec-for-spec, it’s considerably cheaper than its most obvious rival, the Sony VAIO SZ6.

The XPS M1330 is one of the best Windows-based ultra-portable laptops on the market. The 13.3-inch glossy widescreen display is lush (though we’d like it a little brighter), in-built connectivity is second to none, and there’s a raft of support options to make sure downtime is kept to a minimum. If you’re looking for combination of quality features, performance and design, put the XPS M1330 at the top of your list. An almost perfect ultra-portable laptop.

If cutting-edge tech is what you're after, consider the Dell XPS M1330, which performed near the top of its class. Our sub-5-pound test unit came with an extra-cost red lid, an optional LED-backlit display, and integrated mobile broadband. All of those trimmings add up, however: At $2179 (as of 9/12/07), a tricked-out M1330 is expensive. At a 4.7-pound minimum weight, the M1330 is one of the lightest 13.3-inch laptops I've seen. The design is satisfying overall. This complete overhaul of the 12-inch XPS M1210 has a bigger screen yet weighs less, and it's no taller than its predecessor because of new dropped hinges. One of the nicest features is its edge-to-edge keyboard; though the keys don't depress far, their large size makes typing comfortable.

Dell may offer notebooks at amazingly aggressive prices but one thing you can never accuse the company of, is designing good looking machines. Even the XPS range of gaming notebooks, while having a nod to the stylish with the coloured lights and gaming touches, are still rather boxy and plain. This all makes the arrival of the XPS M1330 all the more surprising. Before Dell bought Alienware, the XPS line was seen as its gaming line. Now, though, it has been re-imagined as Dell’s Premium line and the M1330 certainly lives up to expectations. This 2.1kg notebook is an amazingly lightweight machine made from brushed magnesium-alloy with glossy black highlights. What’s more, you can choose from a range of eight different coloured lids to add a hint of personalisation to your notebook. Once you get over the good looks of the machine, the M1330 is just as impressive when it comes to performance.

Boasting a new PhysX card and plenty of other perks for gamers, Dell's latest rig is fast, fun, and ready for the next generation of eye candy. Dell goes full-throttle with its latest XPS notebook, the M1730, which packs an Intel Core 2 Extreme X7900 processor, dual Nvidia graphics processors in an SLI configuration, and Ageia's PhysX controller, which theoretically makes games look more realistic than before. Although the whole experience is still a work in progress, at $3,824, the XPS M1730 is ready for whatever you can throw at it, and then some (view photo gallery). Our tested configuration features Smoke accents on the lid, but you can opt for Red, Blue, or White inserts instead. The cross-hatched gray top is more demure than some designs we've seen from Dell, though the lit lid accents still scream gaming rig, which isn't ideal for all users. Speakers in the front bezel sport red backlights, and the lid's Dell logo and the mousepad's XPS logo are lit as well.

Dell may be one of the top PC brands in the market today, but ask anyone about Dell notebooks and some of the most common replies you'll get will probably be "dull", "bland", "blocky" and "uninspiring". This has nothing to do with specifications or performance, but Dell has been using the same designs generation after generation and with the rise of lifestyle computing products from the likes of Apple, HP, Samsung and Sony, Dell's notebooks really do look archaic in comparison. Even Dell's acquisition of Alienware, a boutique PC brand, early last year did not seem to add any zest into their product line up. Instead, Dell has been experiencing a sluggish year, resulting in HP overtaking them in worldwide PC shipment numbers for the last quarter of 2006. Perhaps this has been a rude awakening for Dell, which has been languishing off their OEM-like approach to the consumer market for too long, but they've finally taken themselves to task with an overhaul of their Inspiron series into a younger, hipper and more attractive range.

Dell launched the new line of Inspiron laptops and desktops with much fanfare on June 26th, 2007 at a Macy's department store in New York. The flagship laptop, the XPS M1330, garnered a lot of press coverage. The launch coincided with a revamping of Dell's marketing efforts in an attempt to lose the 'beige-box' manufacturer cachet and move more upstream by making the brand more appealing to a wider demographic. I bet I know the big question you're asking - was the Dell XPS M1330 worth the wait? I'd like to answer that with a resounding YES. While it's unacceptable that there has been a relatively high proportion of build faults with the laptop, Dell is dedicated to correcting these issues. It's far from an ideal situation, but I get to use this system while a new one is built and shipped to me. Everything else just screams quality. The design is absolutely fantastic and rivals the most aesthetically pleasing designs out there.

I really love the XPS M1330 in terms of its looks, portability and just overall cool factor. The performance for this sized notebook is absolutely amazing as well. This notebook is great for those that want to be portable and have power on the go, plus be fashionable at the same time. If you're just sitting at a desk all day doing work, this notebook is overpriced and does not make sense for you. Overall there's a lot to love about the M1330 and it's easy to recommend.

What more could you ask for from a thin and light notebook? Not much. If any single notebook can bring Dell out of its recent slump, the XPS M1330 is it. This portable's combination of light weight, stylish design, powerful performance, and built-in mobile broadband makes it a top choice for business travelers and hipsters alike (view photo gallery). Add in a stellar screen and keyboard and long battery life, and you have one of the top contenders for notebook of the year. The M1330's soft-touch, crimson exterior is a new look for Dell, but the round logo on the lid is reminiscent of the one on the XPS M1210, this system's predecessor. Only 4.8 pounds (or as light as 4 pounds, depending on the battery), our configuration came with a built-in webcam, nine-cell battery, and travel remote. Although the VGA webcam no longer swivels as it did on the M1210, this one comes with tons of capabilities via software, including pan and zoom, face tracking, and special effects.

The Dell XPS M1330 is designed for those that want power on the go. If you're also fashion conscious and like to standout in a crowd, the looks of the XPS M1330 will help you in that area too. Sleek design coupled with a portable form factor and powerful components come together to make for a compelling notebook. The design of the XPS M1330 really sets it apart. The design is, in a word, striking. The sloping look and stunning lid, available in three different colors, are immediately attention grabbing. The slope is akin to a fast car tear drop look. And while the XPS M1330 isn't designed to go fast in the physical sense, it looks like it could if you just put wheels on it. Once opened the M1330 provides more eye candy in terms of design. The buttons along the top edge are touch sensitive and light up with a soft glow when pressed. They look very stylish. The LED buttons are a bright blue and also eye-catching in their appearance. The silver colored keyboard and brushed aluminum casing on the inside give a slightly industrial look that would tell you there's some muscle to this machine.

While a worthwhile vendor of mass-market mainstream laptops and desktops, Dell has never been known as an innovator in consumer product design. In fact, the company's stodgy, boxy products have been blamed for a loss of market share to the bolder design strokes of competitors such as HP and Gateway. That's what makes the new 13-inch XPS M1330 such a pleasant surprise. From our first behind-closed-doors peek at it last month, we've been impressed with the emphasis on the user experience in this superthin, high-end laptop, from the slot-loading DVD drive to the touch-sensitive media buttons and HDMI-output jack. At $2,000 and up, it's definitely a premium product, but worth it if head-turning design is as important to you as specs and performance. Unlike the bulky, unattractive 12-inch Dell XPS m1210, the M1330 has clearly been built with an emphasis on good looks and clean lines, ditching the earlier model's cumbersome, rotating Web cam and thick chassis.

Dell XPS laptops have been known to pull off performance feats usually associated with desktops. The Dell XPS M1210 (Vista), for instance, has embodied what performance should be like in an ultraportable. But what started off as a stylish design two years ago is now quickly losing ground to trendsetters such as Apple, HP, and Sony. Clearly, it was time for Dell to spice things up. The Dell XPS M1330 ($2,200 direct) is both refreshing and really quite amazing once you factor in both design and performance. Dell slips all the latest technology trends into a very sleek crimson unit while keeping its performance ahead of the competition. It's a breakthrough improvement, which is why I'm giving it the Editors' Choice in the ultraportable category. The two-year-old XPS design was in dire need of a refresh. Considering how the competition has already embraced thinner form factors, the latest LCD technologies, and Intel's latest Centrino Duo offering, Dell took its time in upgrading.
