O HP EliteBook 1040 G4 aloja componentes poderosos em um belo chassi. A opção para uma CPU quad-core de 45 W pode ser uma benção para os profissionais que precisam de mais energia do que o oferecido pelos chips dual-core de 15 W tipicamente usados em portáteis empresariais. Os alto-falantes são fantásticos e perfeitamente ajustados para teleconferências, e a bateria pode literalmente durar o dia inteiro e carregar muito rapidamente. A HP se propus fazer o portátil "guerreiro da estrada" e conseguiu... quase.
É desconcertante que um portátil voltado para chamadas e videoconferências de Skype tenha uma webcam tão medíocre, por exemplo. Além disso, a luz de fundo da tela é desigual nas configurações mais altas; os cantos inferiores são mais escuros do que os cantos superiores, o que pode ser uma distração para os usuários mais exigentes. O teclado também é apenas médio e está aquém das ofertas mais satisfatórias no mercado. Finalmente, a ausência de uma GPU dedicada, mesmo uma de baixa potência, é uma oportunidade perdida. O Core i7-7820HQ parece um pouco desperdiçado sem mais potência gráfica para apoiá-lo.
A outra coisa ruim é o Kaby Lake-R. Os novos chips da 8ª geração trazem quatro núcleos para a linha de CPU de 15 W, oferecendo potência similar em um design muito mais energeticamente eficiente. A arquitetura ainda é muito nova para uma comparação definitiva, mas o Kaby Lake-R provavelmente poderá atingir um nível de desempenho similar com muito menos produção de calor e ainda menos pressão sobre a duração da bateria.
Então, como o Elitebook Folio 1040 G4 se compara a outros portáteis empresariais de 14 polegadas como o X1 Carbon e linhas Latitude ? Não há dúvida de que a HP atualmente traz o aparelho mais potente neste mercado. O quad-core i7-7820HQ está a milhas de vantagem dos concorrentes. No entanto, esta liderança provavelmente terminará quando a Dell e a Lenovo lançarem versões atualizadas de suas máquinas com o quad-cores silicon de 8va geração da Intel. O 1040 G4 provavelmente ainda será mais poderoso, mas esta potência virá a um custo de duração de bateria comparativamente mais baixa.
Além disso, os concorrentes da Lenovo e Dell oferecem opções de manutenção muito melhores e os melhores teclados da classe. Estas são duas áreas em que o 1040 G4 se compromete. Os potenciais compradores terão de considerar quanto poder de processamento eles realmente precisam e determinar se esse empurrão extra vale algumas falhas em outras áreas. Dito isto, o 1040 G4 não é uma má máquina nestes aspectos; simplesmente fica aquém da sua concorrência.
