Assim como a MSI GS65 e Asus ROG GL504 sinalizaram o início dos portáteis de jogos de 15 polegadas de marcos estreitos, o GL704 sinaliza o início de portáteis de jogos de 17 polegadas de marcos mais estreitos a vir. Ele estabelece um precedente para os fabricantes concorrentes tentarem inevitavelmente ultrapassar os painéis de 7 mm e adotar a noção de que os portáteis de jogos de 17 polegadas têm que ser grossos e grandes.
Como o primeiro portátil premier de 17 polegadas da Asus com marcos estreitos, ele faz a maioria das coisas certas. A qualidade de construção e rigidez deve sempre ser prioridade e o GL704 é mais forte em torno da tampa quando comparado com oGS73 e inclusive o Zephyrus GX501, apesar do design de marcos estreitos. As teclas do teclado e o trackpad têm excelente resposta e a qualidade da tela é excelente para provar que os marcos grossos não são necessários para uma ótima tela IPS com todos os recursos mais recentes de tempo de resposta de 5 ms e 144 Hz. A Asus ainda conseguiu extrair mais desempenho da CPU i7-8750H em 10 a 12 por cento, em relação ao GL703GM.
Há uma pequena lista de desvantagens com algumas notáveis. Em primeiro lugar, o ruído do ventilador é mais alto do que o esperado durante os jogos ou quando no perfil de alto desempenho. Não é realista esperar um portátil de jogos silencioso, de alta potência, mas, ao mesmo tempo, o ruído e a pulsação do ventilador devem estar em níveis mais razoáveis para não impactar a experiência de jogo. Em segundo lugar, a falta do Thunderbolt 3, a iluminação RGB por tecla e as opções de GPU mais altas são difíceis de engolir pelo alto preço inicial. A GTX 1070 Max-Q, por exemplo, seria ainda melhor em combinação com a tela de 144 Hz, e tal opção é limitada para a linha Zephyrus por enquanto. Alternativas com o mesmo desempenho de jogo do nosso GL704GM podem ser encontradas por centenas de dólares mais baratas em portáteis como o MSI GF72, HP Omen 17, ou Acer Predator Helios 300. Um preço premium para o design de marcos estreitos do GL704 está muito ativo.
Os jogadores não ficarão desapontados com a estética, design compacto e tela de alta qualidade do ROG GL704GM. O ruído do ventilador deixa muito a desejar e os jogadores hardcore vão desejar opções de GPU mais poderosas, como a GTX 1070, como encontrada na série Zephyrus.
