Besides the Touch ID fingerprint feature, the screen assembly and uprated processor are the headline features. New cameras are a bonus too. Overall the Apple iPad Air 2 is the best tablet you can buy, even though it's been discontinued by Apple. Its performance, attention to detail, quality of build and sheer usability still mean it's a great buy.

Each of the iPad Air 2’s new features seem minor on paper, but taken together they all add up to help make it one of the best tablets available – it’s simply a joy to use. If you want the longest possible battery life though or if you want waterproofing then the Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet is a better pick despite its inferior screen and camera.

The iPad Pro 9.7 is considerably more expensive than the Air 2 (direct comparisons aren't possible any more, because there are no overlaps between the two devices' storage offerings, but the Pro is £60 more at each point than the Air 2 was at launch), yet there are so many significant improvements that we reckon it's worth it. As usual, however, this depends on your individual needs and tastes.

There are some subtle differences like the Rose Gold option, "Hey Siri" and the camera bump but if you're going to spend £150 on the new iPad Pro instead of the iPad Air 2 it's got to be because you will make use of the better screen, extra processing power, more storage and the way it's setup for productivity. And that's with the additional cost of the Smart Keyboard and/or Apple Pencil. If you're just looking for a decent tablet for pleasure, the iPad Air 2 will suffice.

We can't offer a full verdict on which iPad is better until we've spent more time with the iPad Pro, but we think that the more powerful tablet is going to appeal to a reasonably small number of people who are willing to pay the extra for the additional screen space and more powerful processor. We'll be bringing you a full, in-depth review of the iPad Pro soon and a more detailed comparison between the two flagship Apple tablets will be right here when the iPad Pro launches in November.

Although we've only had hands-on time with the Galaxy Tab S2 it's clear to see that it's a great tablet – even if it has suddenly matched the iPad on screen size, aspect ratio and resolution. The S2 wins on dimensions but it's so close that this is really just bragging rights and both tablets have top-notch specs. Aside from the choice between iOS and Android storage and price are the big differences here with that potentially deal breaking Micro-SD card slot found on Samsung's tablet only.

Battery life, too, remains high. While the actual capacity on the Air 2 is smaller than the original Air, improvements with the motion coprocessor mean the battery life is just as good in real terms. It should last 2 days comfortably, and at least a day under heavy loads. The iPad Air 2 is undoubtedly a quality device. It does have a premium price tag, however, as it will cost you at least £399. Overall, the Surface 3 and iPad Air 2 are very different devices, and deciding between the two is all going to depend on what you plan on using your tablet for. It's difficult to beat the iPad Air 2 when it comes to design, portability and its user interface, but there's no split-screen mode, and you won't be able to get full versions of desktop applications to help with your work. That's where the small but powerful Surface 3 comes in, offering full apps, split screen, an excellent keyboard and pen (though they come at an extra cost) and lots of power that'll mean working on presentations, essays, designs and more while out and about has been made possible without needing to lug around a laptop.

If you're looking for a work device first and foremost, the MacBook is the better option. There's a better range of work software on OS X, the hardware keyboard and Force Touch touchpad will be a crucial advantage over a touchscreen, and the extra screen space will be a boon. If you're mostly going to be using email, web surfing and light gaming, the iPad is more appealing.

The iPad Air was one of our favourite tablets of 2013 and its follow-up, the iPad Air 2, is even better. However, if you're an iPad Air user and happy, we don't really see too much point in updating just yet. This is for those that have never owned an iPad and those using older iPad hardware like the iPad 4 or iPad 2.

For first time iPad buyers, the iPad Air 2 is the best bet but we'd suggest skipping the 16GB storage variant of the iPad Air 2, since it is quite possible to run out of space soon. Although, if you are an owner of anything before the iPad Air, we think that if you upgrade, the performance boost will shock you.

As with most Apple products, the iPad Air 2 is evolution, not revolution. There is very little to fault with this device. If you are dedicated fan of the iPad, the new iPad Air 2 effectively combines design with functionality thanks to the thin profile, improved processing performance, and sharper iSight camera. The abundance of apps included with the iPad Air 2 are also what sets it apart from its predecessors.

The iPad Air 2 is impressive and brings a lot of improvement but does so in a mature way. It's not the bold, drastic change its predecessor was. The iPad Air 2 has a Touch ID home button, A8X chipset, higher-res camera and a Gold option. At least those are the changes marked in bold. There are more subtle changes in the iPad Air 2. There's an additional microphone in the place of the mute switch. The FaceTime camera has been updated, the display is now fully laminated and has an anti-reflective layer. All good but quite subtle changes.

Separated by only $100, it’s really tough for us to recommend going with the iPad mini 3 – even though it’s the cheaper of the two models, at $399. It’s even tougher to swallow knowing that it doesn’t see any major improvements, or differences, with its own predecessor. Flipping it around, the $500 cost of the iPad Air 2 makes plenty of sense, since it’s boasting the better internals and performance. At the same time, we have to point out that the iPad Air 2’s larger size makes it more ideal for certain things – such as typing up documents, surfing the web, and watching videos. And best of all, it’s incredibly thin with its construction!

Overall, there’s a lot to go over on the iPad Air 2. While the name suggests that it’s an iterative update in nature, in practice these updates add a lot of compelling hardware to the high-end iPad line. One of the first areas worth looking at here is the design. While not a radical shift from the iPad Air, the differences in design and the even thinner build helps to set the iPad Air 2 apart.

These two couldn’t be any more different on the outside, as one impressively stands out for its premium design and svelte construction – while the other follows a more humble and modest path. Mainly due to that disparity, it makes perfect sense why the iPad Air 2 costs $500, versus the $400 price tag of the Nexus 9. Obviously, the difference in that chunk of change is profound, one that favors Apple’s achievement in producing its tablet.

iPads are typically not the most surprising tablets, and this edition is no exception. Iteration is never as exciting as revolution, but this an iteration on a tablet that was already near –if not at– the top of the pile for quality and capability. Again, if you want to save money you won’t be missing too much by opting for last year’s iPad Air over this one (and there’s even something to be said for going the supersized smartphone route if you’re trying to consolidate), but if it’s a true tablet you’re looking for, it’s tough to find one better than this. The iPad Air 2 is undoubtedly an improvement on last year's model, owing to its A8X chip, new anti-reflective screen and, of course, its slimmer design, which makes the iPad extremely comfortable to use for a tablet of its size. Owners of the iPad Air might want to think twice about upgrading, however, as we're not sure the tweaks and improvements warrant £400 being spent on an upgrade. Existing iPad Air owners won’t find enough here to make the upgrade worthwhile, but for everyone else looking for the best and most powerful tablet, you can't get better than the iPad Air 2. The only downside is that it's becoming increasingly hard to recommend the 16GB version of the iPad, as the operating system and apps become bigger and bigger, plus it now has a good camera you'll likely want to use, all this makes the £479 64GB version a more sensible choice for most users.

Apple certainly hits it on the mark with the iPad Air 2, seeing that it receives all the incremental upgrades we’d commonly expect to find on any successive device. That might sound harsh, but you can't help feeling that the if you already own an iPad, then there's little here. The design is incrementally slimmer, there's a boost in the power, but it's not going to dramatically redefine the iPad experience. The addition of TouchID makes sense for some, but for those who share the iPad with kids, might not be able to make use of it.
