The MacBook Pro 2021 is a wonderful, expensive and hard-to-ignore laptop. After a few years of MacBook Pros with hefty sacrifices, this feels like the most complete Apple product I’ve ever reviewed. From the reintroduction of some vital ports to the stunning Mini LED display and the wide array of powerful internals on offer, this is a fantastic machine for all those who are willing to part with the cash. It isn’t for everyone, though – and that’s absolutely fine. For those who want a laptop for word processing, browsing, Netflix and emailing, this machine is overkill; the MacBook Air M1 is far better choice. It also remains a poor choice for gamers, not because of what’s on offer, but due to MacOS. Simply put, this is the best laptop I have ever used.

What I'm finding particularly appealing is that all this power fits into the 14-inch chassis. Previously, I was carrying a 16-inch MacBook Pro, with a high-end Intel processor. The big screen was nice, but it was heavy and battery life would drop precipitously if challenged with anything more serious than casual browsing and typing up documents. This time around, Apple is offering parity between both the 14-inch and 16-inch versions. You can, if your pockets are deep enough and your ambitions sufficiently grand, have either screen size with the top-tier M1 Max chip. Both can be outfitted with up to 64GB of memory, too: it's the same unified memory approach that we saw with the MacBook Air M1 and Mac mini M1, where CPU and GPU flexibly share the same pool of RAM. What lingers after several months on the road and at home is how reliable this new MacBook Pro is. Yes, there's a whole architectural change inside, but most of the time the user-experience is "it just works."

Where would Apple go from here was the thought that I had when I reviewed the 13-inch M1 MacBook Pro last year. That was a fantastic product and it’s hard to imagine how Apple could add more performance, retain efficiency, and create an overall better notebook. But it turns out that they have. And not only are the new M1 Pro and M1 Max chips are significantly powerful, but they also do so while at little cost to battery life. For regular day-to-day tasks, battery life hasn’t really changed. The amazing chips aside, props to Apple for listening to their customers and walking back on some of the recent MacBook Pro changes. Gone is the questionable Touch Bar and making a much welcome return are the SD card reader, HDMI port, and MagSafe connector. And the icing on the cake is that brilliant Liquid Retina XDR display.

My verdict on the MacBook Pro 14in, then, is very much the same as it was for the MacBook Pro 16in. It’s a stupendous laptop and, if you have the cash and need a powerful portable for demanding creative work, then it’s a no brainer. Just go out and buy one. If the cost isn’t a deal-breaker, then the only decision you’ll have to make is whether to buy the 14in model or the larger, heavier 16in one. My preference would be to opt for this smaller machine as it’s cheaper, lighter and more portable, yet still just as powerful as the larger laptop. Plus you still get great battery life. By all means, go for the larger 16in MacBook Pro if money is no object and you see yourself using it principally at home, or if you require a larger screen to make video and photo editing more comfortable; for me, however, the 14in just edges the battle between the two as the best all-round laptop in the land.

The call from the courier came just as I was done with my morning cuppa. The man at the end of the line said I could expect the 14-inch MacBook Pro to arrive within the next two hours and asked if anyone would be around to sign for it. What a ridiculous question. Who is going to leave the house on the day he expects Apple’s newest MacBook Pro to arrive? I said, yes, and asked if he could please hurry up. He laughed a little and said he will try his very best. I take his word for it. My doorbell rang an hour later. He really did try his best. Very quickly, I took the machine out of its box and fired it up. More time will be required to properly evaluate the notebook, but a few things stand out from my first 24 hours with Apple’s latest and eagerly anticipated MacBook Pro.

From a distance, the new 14-inch MacBook Pro looks a lot like the 13-inch MacBook Air or 13-inch MacBook Pro you might already be using. Look again and the differences pop out. It has a bigger screen (obviously), slimmer bezels and a new keyboard color scheme. Get close enough to pick it up, and that's when it hits you: This thing is actually pretty heavy. It's 3.5 pounds, compared to 3 pounds for the current 13-inch Pro and 2.8 pounds for the MacBook Air. A half-pound may not sound like much, but in the arms race toward ever slimmer and lighter laptops, we're now definitely moving in the opposite direction. For the creative pros and other power users who have been waiting for a post-Intel Mac with the graphics processing power they need for their work, that will hardly matter. For casual users who just want the latest and greatest MacBook, you'll have to calculate if the portability trade-off is worth it for the new features, which include a better webcam and more ports.

Inside this particular 14-inch MacBook Pro is Apple’s full-fat M1 Max chip with 10 CPU cores and 32 GPU cores. It also has the maximum 64GB of unified memory. Storage is 2TB. Essentially, it’s a scaled-up version of the M1 chip that made its debut last year. I ran a quick test using Geekbench 5 and found that while its single-core score was roughly the same as an M1 MacBook Pro or iMac, its multi-core score was a staggering 70% higher. In fact, its score of 12,756 is better than even powerful desktop-class CPUs from Intel like the Core i9-11900K. So far so good, but then you are probably not expecting anything less from a notebook that starts at S$2,999. As for this particular unit, it is – get ready – an eye-watering S$6,149. The fully-loaded M1 Max chip, 64GB unified memory, and 2TB storage add S$1,050, S$1,200, and S$900 respectively to the starting price. As is the case for most modern notebooks, the new MacBook Pros are not user-upgradeable so you have to be really sure of what you want when placing your order.

That's the million-dollar question -- or at least the $2,500-and-up question. Every video editor and creative pro I've spoken to is either excited to get or has already preordered one. For that audience, the decision comes down more to screen size and a small, medium or large number of GPU cores. If you're not specifically going to use these new hardware capabilities and just want the latest, coolest MacBook, know that you're making what is essentially a vanity purchase. The plain old $999 MacBook Air, with its own M1 Chip, is still the most universally useful laptop most people can buy. You do, however, lose out on the new 1080p webcam, which is frankly fantastic. We will continue to update this review with additional test scores and analysis, including battery test scores (my initial video streaming battery test ran for 16.5 hours), in the coming weeks.
