Pocket Gamer. A few manufacturers have already tried themselves in the ultra-mobile gaming notebook division – but none of them were really successful so far. Now Alienware is taking a shot at creating a gaming suitable subnotebook in a 11.1 inch size. An overclocked Intel Core C2D UL energy savings CPU and the strong Geforce GT 335M are to provide for the necessary frame rates. Read here about this combination's performance.
The Midget amongst the Gamers. Until now, Alienware has rather been known for its big and powerful gaming notebooks at a premium price. Now the manufacturer tries itself on a small 11.6 inch performance midget that is already available for less than 1000 euro, and which would like to show off with a Core 2 Duo SU7300 and a GeForce GT 335M. We've checked if the given performance can keep up with the full fledged gamers, even to a part, in our review.

The Alienware m11x also has cool features such as a backlit keyboard for easy night time viewing and of course the Alien head on the lid to let others know this isn't just your ordinary laptop.

Alienware has taken the compact M11x ultraportable gaming platform and boosted its performance by including the new Core i5 processor. Also added is the NVIDIA Optimus technology that will auto switch the graphics on and off which was a sorely lacking feature in the initial release. This is the must have ultraportable for anyone who even wants to consider doing any sort of gaming on the go.

One of 2010's laptop surprises, the Alienware M11x offered something new to challenge the divide between gaming PCs and regular computers. Equipped with Nvidia Optimus technology and new Core i5 and i7 processors, the updated 11.6-inch Alienware M11x has improved performance, but it takes a small step forward, not a quantum leap.

When we first clapped eyes on the Alienware M11x back in March, it blew our tiny minds. We were hugely impressed by what was a high-spec gaming laptop squeezed into the body of a portable netbook. Now the M11x is back, and it's been kitted out with Intel's Core i series processors, as well as Nvidia's Optimus graphics technology. Alienware's updated M11x gaming netbook is just as portable as before, but its gaming performance will melt your mind even more.

We were excited to test out the Alienware M11x with Optimus, and the system really satisfies. Coupled with a Core i7 processor, the Nvidia graphics produced the highest frame rates we've seen in a system this size--not to mention more than 5 hours of battery life. Not bad for a notebook with a current street price under $1,200. While we were dismayed by the fact that our first review sample froze, the second system sent to us by Alienware allayed our concerns. Overall, the M11x is an ultra-powerful and ultra-stylish PC you can take anywhere.

It takes guts to make a gaming rig out of a laptop the size of a netbook, but Alienware seem to have found a good recipe. A drop-dead gorgeous design and impressive lighting effects are the foundations of this gaming laptop. Though the processor isn't best of breed and the keyboard is cramped, Alienware channeled its resources into the one part that mattered most to gamersa powerful Nvidia chip (now powered by Optimus). Mind you, it won't trump the performance of an Alienware M15x (Core i7) (though it can still run multimedia tasks well) and caters to a different audience than an Asus U30Jc-1A. But the Alienware M11x (Core i7) will get a nod from me every time gaming and travel are used in the same sentence.

This laptop targets a very specific set of audience, it’s only for someone who wants a gaming laptop that’s extremely easy to carry around and can handle demanding games too. But this is also only when you’re opting for the Rs 70,000 variant. The Rs 98,000 machine which we tested is completely over the top, and you obviously have some very good options.

Alienware has managed to pull off the combination of stamina and performance in an attractive, comfortable ultra-portable laptop. The M11x mostly does well, but its main weakness is a glossy screen without much contrast, which loses it its fifth star. It's still a great choice for mobile gamers who don't want a huge 4 kg machine and who fancy having the extra battery life for doing other things with their laptop.

Considering this is a gaming-centric netbook, the lack of an optical drive serves as a hindrance if you want to install games or software from physical discs. Gamers however can still puchase and download games from online game distribution services like Steam, which comes pre-installed on the M11X.

Regardless of the cost, the Alienware m11x is still in a class composed of, well, itself. The new chips are definitely faster - the Core i7 especially - and even though they're cost more in terms of money and battery life, they do make a noticeable difference. The Core i7-based Alienware m11x felt extremely snappy, with zero menu lag and quick dialog boxes; the extra CPU power will also likely come in handy in smoothing out CPU-intensive games like Shattered Horizon.

The Alienware M11x is difficult to score comparatively. Significantly cheaper ultra-portables perform better at everyday tasks, and most 15in+ dedicated gaming notebooks perform better at gaming. But the M11x deserves the niche it's carving for itself with the forthcoming Core i5 and i7 models adding to its appeal. Considering its weight and dimensions, this is, indeed, a truly mobile gaming notebook with an excellent battery life for such a capable machine.

Aesthetically, the M11x sports touches befitting a gaming notebook: an Alienware-esque contoured body and LED backlighting behind the keyboard, power button, and front grills. It also comes fairly well-equipped with ports, including both HDMI and DisplayPort outputs. It lacks an Express Card slot, but mobile broadband is possible via the internal WWAN option (an extra $125).Frankly, were amazed at Alienwares accomplishment. Are there sacrifices? Sure. The biggest being the lack of an optical drive. But all things considered, that seems a fair trade for an otherwise thoroughly outfitted ultraportable that can actually play todays games.

The Alienware M11X comes with a fixed configuration in India for around Rs.65,900. If you want an SSD and a complimentary stroke, then that'll set you back by Rs.87000. Even the standard pricing is quite excessive and a 50K price tag would have been reasonable.

The final stumbling block is that price. At £1,208 inc VAT, this money-no-object Alienware M11x treads perilously close to the likes of Sony's mighty Z-series, a laptop that bests it in most areas without breaking a sweat. Do away with the SSD in favour of a bog-standard mechanical drive, however, and the M11x is an entirely different prospect.

While that might sound brief, the Alienware M11x delivers a gaming experience that was previously unavailable at the lightweight end of the laptop market – and hey, it’s still a London to Manchester train trip, or European flight. Gamers missing the genuine, Triple-A title experience from their travels will relish those two and a half hours, in spite of the £749 price tag. A pricey revolution in ultra portable PC gaming.

Arguably the Alienware M11x is the first true gaming laptop. Not only can it play games well, it can be used on the move just like any normal laptop - more so than most, in fact, as its battery life is among the best in the market. We'd probably wait for it to be updated with Nvidia's improved Optimus graphics switching tech, but nonetheless this is an outstanding (and unique) machine.

Alienware’s M11x is a pretty incredible computer. It’s not the perfect gaming machine or the only computer that you’ll ever need, but what Alienware was able to do with this sub-4.5 pound computer is surprising. It’s small, it’s portable, and it plays games. The battery isn’t removable, making for one of the computer’s few flaws, but on the other hand it’s quite powerful, enough so that you can leave the (tiny) charger at home and work for the day or game for two hours.

We really like the Alienware M11x. While it doesn't excel in any one category versus true ultra-portable or dedicated gaming notebooks, it's combination of an ultra-portable form factor and gaming-class components make the M11x appealing on a number of different levels. It's not the fastest notebook, nor does it offer the best battery life, but it is good enough in so many categories that the M11x can almost be considered a jack-of-all-trades type machine.

The Alienware M11x is certainly heavy for an ultraportable laptop. It's thicker than many of its contemporaries, too. As a gaming laptop, it's downright svelte. Even 13- or 15-inch models that offer this kind of performance typically weigh more, and are physically larger. If you've been torn between a bulky laptop that's powerful enough to handle games but gets mediocre battery life, or a more easily portable laptop with great battery life that doesn't perform well, worry no longer.

I have to say that this is a worthwhile purchase for anybody looking for portability without sacrificing performance as you would with a netbook. Not only does it play back Blu-Rays, but it games rather well, and it's lightweight enough to haul around just about anywhere. The debate over whether or not it should have had the low voltage Core i5/i7 processors is not an issue for me as the M11x does everything I want it to and then some. I've been waiting for such a laptop for a long time now, and Alienware has hit a 'home run' in my opinion.

If you're a PC gamer sick of lugging around an 8- to 10-pound monster with awful battery life just to play games, Alienware's M11x is your salvation. This 11.6-inch ultraportable laptop has enough power to play all the latest titles while making only modest compromises, yet it's considerably more portable than typical gaming notebooks in the 15-inch range, let alone giant desktop-replacement notebooks. In the M11x, gamers finally have a fully capable notebook that's easily portable and offers great battery life.

Question: Why would gamers, who typically lug 15- or 17-inch notebooks to LAN parties, even consider an 11.6-inch portable for play? Answer: For the same reason everyone else buys light laptops. In the olden days (that is, circa 2009), laptops with high-end graphics needed lots of space for cooling, and small screens meant low resolution. This ultraportable gaming laptop offers good 3D performance, long battery life, and a dose of Alienware bling.

This isn’t the be-all and end-all in mobile gaming; while the overclocked processor is certainly capable, it’s ULV roots mean it’s not on a par with the latest Core i5 and Core i7 chips you’ll find in bigger notebooks. That’s the payoff for longer runtimes when you’re on integrated graphics. Still, we’ve a feeling that’s a compromise those people keen on an 11.6-inch machine will be willing to make.

It's barely bigger than a large netbook like the Asus 1101HA or Sony Vaio X, but Alienware's latest laptop is anything but a lightweight. Packed underneath its H.R Giger-inspired shell are enough electronics to make this a tiny gaming marvel. The M11x looks exactly like a shrunken version of the desktop replacement systems the Alienware is more famous for. The screen isn't perfect, but in every other way this is the laptop sore-shouldered gamers have been waiting for.

The Alienware M11x is a very intriguing machine. For $1,099, you’re essentially getting two systems: a thin-and-light ULV laptop that’s fairly portable, and can last nearly a full day on a charge, and a gaming rig that lets you play graphics-intensive games at more than comfortable frame rates. While we wish the M11x possessed Nvidia’s Optimus technology to let you switch between integrated and discrete graphics instantaneously, we can put up with the minor inconvenience of having to press a button.

The M11x is a premium machine that you'll pay a premium price for. It offers astounding performance for its size, but the cramped keyboard, gaudy design (which might be to your taste, but isn't to ours) and slightly iffy viewing angles on the display mean that we can't give it full marks. It's hard not to love the M11x after spending some time with it. It takes the traditional laptop and netbook formula and tilts the balance in unconventional ways, resulting in novel tradeoffs. It's sized like a netbook but it costs as much as many mainstream laptops -- and weighs as much as some of them. It has a slow CPU but a fast GPU that eats battery power voraciously enough that we'd probably just leave switched off until it was time to game -- otherwise known as "most of the time" for us. It purposefully looks like a cross between a muscle car and spaceship. Whether or not these particular choices appeal to you probably depends on how much GPU-dependent gaming you do on the go, and how much you're willing to spend on a machine with a smaller screen. We're pretty sure those of you who run out to buy one right this second won't be disappointed, but we're going to hold out for NVIDIA Optimus, and maybe a slightly faster processor -- all the while dreaming of keyboards backlit in Engadget blue.

Like the M15x and M17x before it the M11x begins to impress as soon as it is removed from the packaging. The overall design of the chassis is good, drawing great attention wherever the laptop is being used and the finish is perfect throughout. Alienware have also succeeded in making the M11x feel sturdy and robust, something which most laptops of a similar size fail to do. Upon turning the machine on we are presented with some great touches like the backlit keyboard, which is both responsive and comfortable to use.

A Alienware faz parte do Grupo Dell desde 2006.
