Little brother. Acer's tablet family has a new, little member. The Iconia Tab A100 offers you a 7 inch touchscreen and can be taken along everywhere thanks to its compact build. The Honeycomb tablet (Android 3.2) is price-tagged at 299€ in the wifi-only version and 399€ in the wifi + 3G version.

Acer’s Iconia Tab A500 was one of the first tablets we tested early last year, which came with the then brand new Honeycomb OS. And while the Tab’s 10.1-inch size was considerable, and the innards equally decent, its overall performance left much to be desired. Today I’ll be looking at the Iconia Tab A100 to see how well the little brother performs in the popular 7-inch tablets market.

The Acer Iconia A100 aims to provide all the features and benefits of an Android tablet in a compact design focussing on portability. However, despite the Iconia A100's decent performance, it's ultimately crippled by a poor quality display, mediocre battery life and a chunky design. If you're looking for the ideal 7in Android tablet, the Acer Iconia A100 is not it. Keep looking.

Despite the tablet’s display and battery life failing to reach my high expectations, I enjoyed using it during my week-long test. Sure, the 7in screen’s resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels is barely more than an iPhone 4’s 960 x 640, but the Iconia Tab A100’s physical size makes just about everything easier to do, especially typing, without the dinner-plate juggling demanded by 10in tablets.

On paper the Acer Iconia A100 sounds great. It's a sub-£300 Android Honeycomb tablet using the still-fairly-rare 7in form factor that has all the power of the top tabs in town. But a few serious problems blow its chances. The display quality is poor, battery life is half of what an iPad achieves and the design inspires indifference rather than desire.

Where the Acer lets itself down is the viewing angles of the screen. Place it on a table, spin it round and you'll notice it has one good side, one unviewable side and two portrait views that will just about do. Not ideal, and depending on how you use it this can be incredibly annoying. Hand-held it's fine, but problems can arise if you prop it up beside you. So hardware connections and viewing angles aside, this is a great tablet, and for this sort of money it's just about unbeatable.

With an initial retail price around £300, the Acer A100 represents reasonable value for money. The device is cheaper than the entry-level HTC Flyer (£330) and BlackBerry PlayBook (£340), but more expensive than the Wi-Fi Galaxy Tab (£250). Despite offering reasonably good performance and some unique connectivity, the battery life on the A100 is a major letdown and makes it very difficult to recommend.

Somewhere, there's a niche for this tablet. It's mostly for folks who want a smaller tablet, but then they could just select a smartphone with a large screen, such as the HTC Evo 3D. Ebook reading worked well, if you can live with the somewhat glossy screen. To say the Acer Iconia Tab A100 is the best 7-inch Android tablet is a bit misleading. But we do prefer it over the HTC Flyer, due to the included Android 3.2 operating system. In some ways, the BlackBerry PlayBook is better in a technical sense – at least it does real multitasking – but it has too few apps. We like the A100 for an express purpose: greater mobility and book reading. For most tasks, a 10-inch tablet is a wiser bet.

This isn’t the perfect tablet, then, not by a long chalk. And with average screen quality, below par battery life and a poor camera, you’d think we’d be ready to stick the boot in. But the Acer A100 is actually a rather likeable device. It’s nice to use, snappy and responsive, and looks even more attractive when you put it in context of the immediate competition. It costs £300 inc VAT, the same as the ageing 7in Samsung Galaxy Tab, and a massive £180 cheaper than the 16GB HTC Flyer. If a 10in tablet doesn’t appeal, this little alternative just might.

This tablet is good for a lot of things. Wrapping up the awesome power of the NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual-core processor in a medium-sized package, one that’s not a smartphone yet not quite a full-sized tablet makes this device good for some slightly more hardcore on-the-go games than you’re used to on your Motorola ATRIX 4G or Motorola Photon 4G. On the other hand, it’s thicker than the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, a 10-inch tablet, yet just about the same size as the original Galaxy Tab 7-inch, a tablet which does not yet feature the tablet-centric Google mobile OS Android 3.2 Honeycomb – this tablet has the right to boast itself up as the first and only tablet to currently be featuring Android 3.2 Honeycomb, again the first tablet-based Google-made mobile OS to be optimized for tablets smaller than 10-inches.

One thing falls flat here: The Iconia A100 doesn't have a traditional USB mass storage mode, and it's totally incompatible with Macs. To plug it into a Windows PC, you have to download Acer's clunky Acer Sync software, after which the Tab appears as a drive you can drag and drop to. Acer Sync also purports to sync your Outlook data with your tablet, but I couldn't get that part of the software to find my tablet.

The Iconia 100 is the smaller of the family with a seven inch (1024 x 600 resolution) screen. It runs Nvidia’s Tegra 2 dual-core processor and has a mini HDMI output, along with its mini USB port. The Iconia A500 comes in at a much more sizeable 10.1in with a 1280 x 800 resolution screen. It does make it heftier though, weighing in at 700g. It runs on the same Nvidia Tegra 2 dual core chip as its little brother, the A100, and has the same sized cameras. However, the incorporation of a full size HDMI to stream content to your TV is a definite improvement.

Android Honeycomb 3.1 and subsequent updates will likely bring innovative features to the Iconia Tab and potentially to the tablet world, something Google must do to overcome the iPad's dominance. For now though, if you are going after the best possible tablet experience I would likely spend the extra $100 and get an iPad 2. Despite the inclusion of Flash and more flexibility in the OS and expansion options, today iOS is definitely more polished and smooth. The difference in weight doesn’t sound like much but after handling both tabs extensively, it will eventually catch up to you and you’ll appreciate having the slimmer iPad.

Of course in the current market one cannot discuss tablets without mentioning the iPad 2. The A500 is 5.3mm thicker and 160g heavier, which will be a deal breaker for many users, although the price is certainly right. But Acer has definitely produced an alternative, if not a killer, that Android fans will appreciate.

Still, for the price the Iconia is a lot of tablet for your money. You’re getting the features of a laptop – minus the keyboard – on a device that can fit in a satchel. If the device we had was 3G-capable, the Iconia could have been our top Android tablet.

The Acer Iconia A500 feels similar to every other Android Honeycomb tablet once you get past its design. However, we're not crazy about some of the bits that Acer is responsible for. The look lacks confidence and the bold strokes of a real designer, it's also missing any cool extras like the keyboard dock of the Eee Pad Transformer and the screen falls short of IPS alternatives. What's more, the overall Android tablet experience still doesn't match that of the iPad when it comes to apps. We'd be happy to use this device as our everyday tablet companion, but would we splash out £450 on it? Probably not, given the other options out there.

Acer has produced a fine product with the Iconia Tab A500. Its performance closely matches that of the Motorola Xoom but it is lighter, offers more connectivity and has a working microSD slot to expand the storage capacity. There was no 3G support in the model I tested but I thoroughly enjoyed using it just the same. It is, however, almost as expensive as the Xoom, so those on tighter budgets should consider the 16GB version which costs around £380.

There are many good points. The speakers are better than Asus’ Transformer. Battery life, at over ten hours, is brilliant. Uniquely, the Iconia A500 also comes with the same kind of haptic feedback we're familiar with from Android phones, which makes typing on the touch screen more reliable.?And the price is right. At £450 this 32GB model might seem expensive, but there's a 16GB version on the way which will cost £70 less. But for all its pro points, the question remains. Why would you buy the Iconia A500 over any other Android tablet? We think probably not.

In conclusion all I’ll say is that the Acer Iconia Tab is nothing remarkable in the state it’s in right now. Hardware wise it’s pretty solid, especially with the inclusion of the full-sized USB port, but it cannot reach its full potential until Google improves functionality with the next Honeycomb update. The Iconia tab is just good enough, not great. The only other thing working in its favor right now is its low price tag. Certainly, anybody who’s looking to get a new tablet should probably have a look at the Acer Iconia Tab, but right now the tablets market is still in it’s infancy to provide an experience rich enough to replace netbooks.

If you're set on buying an Android tablet today, the Iconia Tab is one of the best bets at this writing--it tops the Xoom in functionality, and its $450 price is significantly cheaper than the $750 no-contract price of the G-Slate. The Iconia Tab is no iPad-killer, but it does give hints of the power of Android's more open and flexible platform. While I found faults with the Iconia Tab itself, many of my gripes lie with Android 3.0; if Google could only fix that OS's issues and get the native app ecosystem jump-started, Android tablets might be on to something.

In all, our impressions of the Iconia A500 are mixed. It feels a little slicker than the Motorola Xoom in use, and there are some useful bits of software included. It’s nicely designed too, with cameras that do a passable job of shooting the odd picture and video clip. Battery life, however, isn’t quite up there with the Xoom’s, and the screen isn’t as attractive as the Transformer’s. And at £447 for the Wi-Fi only version, it's hardly any cheaper than the iPad 2. As with the other Android 3 tablets we've seen so far, it’s almost there, but it still doesn't feel quite like the finished article.

But if a consumer had both an Acer A500 and an iPad 2 (or heck a, iPad 1,) and wanted to avoid appearing to have the same technology as everyone else, what then? Acer’s made a tablet that looks like none other, and it’s got a nice sound system on it, and it’s mostly metal, and it’s light. And it feels nice to hold, and there’s a USB port in it. And the SDcard port works. What other reason do you need?

Acer’s made a tablet that looks like none other, and it’s got a nice sound system on it, and it’s mostly metal, and it’s light. And it feels nice to hold, and there’s a USB port in it. And the SDcard port works. What other reason do you need?

The Acer Iconia Tab W500 is great for someone who wants the familiarity of Windows, or who wants to do Windows-based work occasionally. It excels at audio and video playback, but you'll need an SD Card to store that media on because it has limited built-in storage. This tablet is faster than an average netbook, and you can remove the screen and use it as a responsive touch tablet. The main drawbacks are the bulk that comes with the hardware requirements of Windows, and the battery life that is more in line with a regular laptop than with what we've come to expect from ARM-based tablets.

With a large proportion of corporate customers, we can see why Acer decided to take a punt on a Windows-based tablet. Unfortunately, a desktop OS just doesn’t cut the mustard here, and bolting on a keyboard only makes matters worse. Look to an Android tablet instead or choose a low-cost laptop if Windows is what you need.

The Iconia Tab W500 wants to be the best of both worlds; in the end it's one of the nicest Windows tablets we've seen so far (barring the small size of the on-screen keyboard) and that's both praise and complaint. Windows 7 does do touch pretty well, but it's always going to be an afterthought for all but a few apps. There's a lot you can do well with touch on Windows, from browsing to playing all of your media (especially in Windows Media Center which works as well for fingers as it does for a remote control). It's the other apps that you want Windows for in the first place that don't always work well enough with touch. You have the keyboard as a fallback, but that's not quite ergonomic enough to really make this the perfect combo. But if you have a tablet PC with a swivelling keyboard that you long to be able to rip off (and you already know what compromises you'll be making), you'll love the Tab.

The Acer Iconia W500 is a device that does the tablet cause no good. The keyboard dock is clumsily implemented but without it, using Windows 7 becomes a chore. After a few more passes from Acer's design bods it could have been closer to a winner, but as is it's too bulky to beat rival Android tablets and not convenient enough to worry ultra-portable laptops.

We could put up with the W500's numerous shortcomings if the battery life was long, but even here the W500 is disappointing. In our light usage web browsing test it lasted just under seven hours. This is long compared to 15in laptops, but most netbooks and some ultra-portable laptops can last as long as ten hours. When playing H.264 video, the battery ran for just under five hours. This might seem impressive at first glance, but it pales in comparison to the iPad 2 which lasted 17 hours in the same test. The bottom line is that you'd need to keep the charger close by when using the W500 just so it doesn't ran out of battery power when you need it most.

Is this the tablet for you? Are you an ACER fan and just love the brushed aluminum design, or have you been waiting for a 3G/4G tablet that wont break the bank like the Xoom? While there is many tablets on the Android market that are thinner, prettier and even have 4G LTE the ACER Iconia Tab A501 is a complete package. ACER has spared nothing and offers outputs and connectivity, performance, portability and more all in a decently sleek package that is highly affordable. The ACER Iconia Tab A501 with AT&T 4G is priced at $329 with a new, two-year data agreement, or offered at $479 for the 16GB contract-free version. I don’t know about you but the HTC Jetstream and it’s $600+ price tag seems a bit much right about now.

The bottom line with the A501 is no different than the A500: It’s a good, solid tablet, with better-than-average support for media consumption, but there’s nothing spectacular about it—including its “4G” speeds. If you need a tablet with an always-on Internet connection, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 is the way to go, but if you can wait, you should; carriers are likely to offer more and more tablets in the coming months, hopefully with faster speeds than the A501.

Modern couch surfer. The new Acer Iconia Tab A200 brings the latest technology to the private living room. In addition to a 10.1 inch screen, it features a 16 GB memory capacity, wifi module and Google's Android 4.0.3 ICS. The lack of a UMTS module won't be a decisive factor in view of a price of EUR 349, as our test report shows.

If you’re buying a tablet because you’re looking for nifty software and want to keep your costs down, you’re still better off with iPad 2. But the Android platform has its advantages, also, and the Transformer Pad TF300 remains the best value choice today—especially if you opt for the 32GB version at $400. Not only will you get a lot of bang for your buck at that price, but the Transformer Pad’s Tegra 3-optimized graphics are capable of some impressive tricks over the iPad 2, if the handful of games optimized for the platform appeal to you.

Expectations should be tempered with the Acer Iconia Tab A200. It's a beast of a tablet, physically, and was a bit uncomfortable to hold for long periods due to its size and weight. However, with that girth comes useful features, like a full-sized USB 2.0 port. It is very much the bigger sibling to the Acer Iconia Tab A100 ($329.99, 4 stars), which was one of the first tablets to get Android 3.2 Honeycomb. The smaller A100 was a clunker when it came to looks, but it performed admirably when compared with the competition at the time. A lot has changed since we reviewed the A100, though. While it's still a decent tablet, it would likely score lower by today's standards.

The Acer Iconia Tab A200 is a budget 10.1in Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich tablet that will go on sale for £279, significantly undercutting top tabs like the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. Although it side-steps the most serious issues that cut-price tablets often suffer from, areas where the money has been saved are apparent. Without any stand-out features, we're not yet convinced it's necessarily a better buy than a first-wave Android Honeycomb device.

The Acer Iconia Tab A200 isn't designed to be cutting edge. It's a tablet that hits the sweet spot in terms of price and features. For $349, consumers get solid performance, a full USB 2.0 port and long battery life. We also like the Acer Ring interface and the useful lock-screen shortcuts. For $150 less than the iPad 2 and the highest-end Android slates, you're giving up a rear-facing camera and a thinner and lighter chassis, something you can get with the 16GB Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 ($431). Others may prefer the original ASUS Eee Pad Transformer ($399), which sports an IPS display with better viewing angles and plugs into an optional keyboard dock. Overall, though, the A200 delivers the best bang for your buck among 10-inch Android tablets.

A 32GB A510 will set you back £130 more than a 16GB Nexus 7. For the extra you get a larger screen, twice the storage, an expansion slot, an HDMI port and that handy USB adapter. On the downside the screen isn’t as good as the latest AMOLED and IPS devices and it’s a bit plain and heavy. Still, until a Nexus 10 arrives – if it ever does – the Acer makes a lot of sense and represents good value for money.

Unfortunately for the A510, you can get more capable tablets for less. The Asus TF300T, at $399 for a similar 32GB model, gives you 95 percent of the A510's speed, along with a better camera and slimmer form factor, for less money. The Apple iPad 2, currently running $399, is another prime competitor—it isn't as fast as the Iconia 510, but it has far, far more tablet-optimized apps. I'd also keep an eye out for Toshiba's upcoming tablet line, which we did a recent hands-on with. It promises Tegra 3 power and Android 4.0 with USB host mode in a sleeker body.

Unfortunately, the A510 is shoehorned between the 32GB ASUS Transformer Pad TF300, which offers quad-core power for $50 less, and the 16GB new iPad, which is $50 more, but offers a much sleeker design, superb screen and a larger selection of apps. And even though it's not quad-core, we also prefer the $448 Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 to the A510 because its slimmer and has a better screen.

The Acer Iconia Tab A700 is an appropriate upgrade to Acer's earlier efforts, but it doesn't really go far enough to make it a viable choice for new tablet buyers. Its sluggish performance and cheap feel make it hard to recommend against the Asus Transformer Pad Infinity or the Apple iPad.

It’s a little behind its rivals when it comes to performance and battery life, but the Iconia Tab A700 is a cracking all-round package. The display is gorgeous, there's enough power for games and apps, and it’s vastly cheaper than the only other Full HD tablet on the market, Asus’ Transformer Pad Infinity 700. For those after a premium experience without spending a fortune, the Acer Iconia Tab A700 is an affordable taste of Android tablet luxury.

This tablet will cost you $449.99 at any of a variety of outlets, this ringing in just at or below the rest of the market offering similar solutions. You’ve got the most advanced options in an Android tablet included here, and Acer’s unique vision for Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich will not leave you wanting for multi-tasking and for standing out in the software crowd. We recommend picking up the Iconia Tab A700 especially if you’ve already got Acer notebooks or towers in your home – their software connects quite fluidly and makes your whole personal cloud experience all the richer.

When it comes to tablets, we’d wager that most Maximum PC readers lean toward the x86 variety—in theory, at least. In the final tally, though, we’re not convinced that this is the ultimate dual-purpose device. Instead it seems like it’s trying to be too much, and falling short in both of its purposes in the process.

The Acer Iconia W700 is not a bad product, but it makes more promises than it keeps. It's neither a great tablet, nor a great laptop replacement as its battery life is too short and the supplied accessories too cumbersome. The only genuine bright spot is the screen, but it's not enough on its own to convince us.

The Iconia W700 is a hybrid, and hybrids usually come off as either an enlightened merger of technology, or an unsatisfying compromise. Unfortunately, the W700 represents too much of the latter. The tablet itself is workable, and the accoutrements show the germ of a good idea, but the idea of a hybrid PC can (and should) be better realized.

The Acer Iconia W700-6465 lies somewhere between slate tablets with mobile operating systems, like the iPad, and Windows 8 convertible ultrabooks, like the Dell XPS 12 or Sony VAIO Duo 11. The W700 is certainly more capable than less Windows RT tablets like the Microsoft Surface with Windows RT or the Asus Vivo Tab RT$579.99 at TigerDirect.com. The W700 is sure to appeal to businesses that already use Windows XP or Windows 7 tablets, like retail, healthcare, and information gathering organizations, but it will also appeal to end users who want a really portable PC that can do more work than the Android-based or iOS-based tablet they've been carting around. It's also an effective laptop replacement for people that retrieve information around the house or on the road. It's a great place to start and a benchmark to compare against, so the Acer Iconia W700-6465 is our first Editors' Choice winner in the category of Windows 8 slate tablets.

As a powerful Windows 8 tablet, the 11.6-inch Iconia W700 has every ingredient for success. It sports a beautiful, Full HD IPS screen, a stylish and strong unibody aluminium chassis, decent connectivity, and reasonably powerful specs. However, there is no mobile keyboard dock available for it, meaning it will have a hard time replacing your laptop for productivity. Combined with other niggles like the lack of an SD card reader, this would seriously dent the W700’s chances were it not also the cheapest full-fledged Windows 8 tablet we’ve seen, offering truly superb value by including a USB 3.0 dock and Bluetooth keyboard by default. Either way, we’ll be sure to give you our final verdict in the full review coming soon.

Windows 8 has been slammed, but not all of the criticisms are fair, nor do they necessarily apply to the tablet side of Microsoft's OS. As the Acer W700 demonstrates, Windows 8 offers a winning tablet experience, and its productivity features show remarkable potential. A tweak here, an iteration there, and the Acer/Microsoft partnership might turn into a perfect Windows 8 marriage.

Were it not for the subpar screen and battery life, the Acer Iconia Tab A110 would have made an interesting alternative to the Nexus 7, as many people have complained about the lack of microSD expansion and micro HDMI out capability. Unfortunately, the screen is a significant downgrade, the overall design feels cheap, and the A110 is more expensive than the Nexus 7 even though it offers half the internal storage. On top of that, Google has moved onto its next version of Android, 4.2, and though it's more of an incremental upgrade, there's no telling if or when the A110 might see that update. If you absolutely must have microSD and HDMI out on your tablet, the A110 could make a suitable option, but otherwise, just spend less and get more with the Nexus 7.

The Acer Iconia Tab A110 doesn't stand up to the obvious competition from the Nexus 7, let down by a chunky design and low-grade screen. It's more expensive than Google's tablet, with less storage, so unless you need a microSD card slot or micro HDMI port, you’ll find a better all-round device in Google’s subsidised Nexus 7.

The A110 has a less impressive screen than the Nexus 7 and a lower capacity battery. On the other side of the mattress, it has a Micro SD card slot and an HDMI port. In my book that makes it a close call, although Android updates will roll out to the Nexus 7 faster than to the Acer. If display quality is your main desire, buy the Nexus 7 but if it’s storage flexibility that floats your boat, then the Acer is definitely worth a look.

This is a tricky conclusion to write, because as always there’s a lot of concluding that has to be done. On the one hand, we have Intel’s Clover Trail platform. On the other we have Acer’s Iconia W510 tablet itself. And on a magical third hand we have to conclude on behalf of Microsoft’s Windows 8. Clover Trail is good. I only have NVIDIA’s Tegra 3 to compare it to at this point, and there Intel wins hands down.

We’ve been eagerly awaiting the arrival of the Atom-powered Windows 8 tablets, and, despite a patchy performance, the Acer demonstrates exactly why. The OS is the big issue here: while Windows RT is hamstrung by its lack of apps and inability to run x86 software, Acer’s Iconia W510 is limited only by the power of its Atom processor. Within reason, you can run whatever Windows applications you like. It’s sorely lacking in premium appeal – the plasticky hardware is uninspiring at best – but, for those hoping for a halfway house between a Windows netbook and Android or iOS tablet, the Acer Iconia W510 may prove just the ticket.

The Acer Iconia W510-1422 may not be the fastest tablet—it's pretty slow for anything beyond Web browsing and document editing—but it does offer portability and unparalleled battery life. This machine is ready for the 2013 season of Windows 8 action, but it’s not going to replace your MacBook Air. It’s not meant to – if you’re a Windows user and want a mobile device ready for everyday action and a relatively large amount of battery time, that’s where you’ll find the greatness in the Iconia W5. The whole setup is solid, the presentation is ready to take on the top competition in the market today, and it’s easily one of our top choices for convertible tablets running full Windows 8 today – and not just because there aren’t many of them out there!

In our tablet tests, the system fared far better. Performance was on par with its Atom-based peers, though battery life dropped to only about 8 hours in our continual video rundown test. Subjectively, the W510-1422 unit feels nimble enough, and 1080p video played fine in the Windows 8 video player. The popular VLC player had issues using its own internal codecs, so if that's your preferred player, you'll need to set it to use the system codecs.

None of the variations on this theme is as elegant as the best clamshell or convertible laptops, and some of the prices we've seen will be hard for consumers to swallow. The 10-inch Acer Iconia W510 comes very close to being our favourite Windows 8 convertible tablet/laptop with Atom inside. It’s smaller and lighter than 11.6-inch rivals, but doesn’t compromise on resolution, connectivity or battery life to get there. It also sports a unique (at least for a detachable convertible) rotating hinge that genuinely expands it usability, while its screen and speakers more than hold their own. Unfortunately, the keyboard won’t be for everyone due to its poor layout, and the touchpad is rather stiff. If you can live with these flaws and don’t mind the absence of a Wacom stylus, this hybrid comes recommended.

Acer’s Iconia W700 is a reasonable attempt at a consumer Windows 8 tablet, and it’s keenly priced. It has serious weaknesses, however. On the move, the lack of a docking keyboard makes it far less usable than many rival tablets or hybrid devices, and the absence of active stylus support hinders its appeal as a dedicated tablet. Factor in the modest performance and, although the price may be right, this tablet doesn’t quite make the grade.

And the Acer Iconia W3 is only the first such device to hit the market. As other vendors follow suit, it will be interesting to see if they can produce small Windows 8 devices that feel a little more high-end than what Acer has delivered. But even if they do, most users will probably find Windows 8 simply too frustrating on a tiny screen for such small devices to reach a mass audience. If Microsoft is hoping that smaller displays would reverse Windows' fortunes in the tablet market, I strongly suspect it's in for another disappointment.

At best, the Iconia W3 proves Windows 8.1 can run smoothly and for a respectable duration on a compact tablet. We can only hope there’s more attractive hardware to come, though, because the W3 doesn’t have anything like the quality to justify its premium £330 price tag.

It’s difficult to judge this tablet as a competitor with any other similar solution since it basically stands alone in the field right this minute. While Acer has brought forth a relatively decent effort in the 10.1-inch space for tablets with the transforming Acer Iconia W510, it’s here that the company goes all-in with a stand-alone mini-tablet effort for Windows 8 at last. While we’ve yet to see any company bring the full-powered mini-tablet with high-definition display to Windows 8 that we desire – or at least desire to see – Acer currently leads the pack with this machine.

With the Iconia W3, its new 8.1-inch Windows 8 tablet, Acer is hoping to put a fully-functioning desktop in the palm of your hand and wipe out the need for the iPad mini or Nexus 7 at the same time. It seems it might well have achieved exactly that. The Iconia W3 comes pre-installed with Microsoft Office Home & Student, boasts 2GB of RAM on the Intel Clovertrail architecture and offers either 32 or 64GB of storage.

It is 20x14x1cm and weights 372grams. The screen surrounds are creamy grey and the back is silver. A not so small Android Tablet that is advertised as useable in one hand. Certainly for those with smaller hands this maybe a slight problem. It is however a near 8inch screen and means normal web pages display without any problems.

Acer's attempt at a low cost Android tablet does a decent job but falls short due to the highly competitive market. It does cost less than $200, offers a decently lag free experience and features an HDMI connector and MicroSD slot most of its competitors do not. The problem is that the tablet it bigger, heavier and features a display that feels like a first generation tablet when compared to those released in the past couple of months.

We got our hands on Acer’s 7.9-inch Iconia A1 recently and were quietly impressed with a budget tablet that appeared to be punching above its weight yet keeping its feet on the canvas. Useful budget device that, while not as good as the more expensive iPad mini, punches above its weight impressively.

The price might look attractive initially, but the Iconia A1 is a damp squib. Its screen is grainy and dim; it isn’t the smoothest or slickest tablet; the battery life is average; and we’re not sold on the physical design. Ultimately, you’re better off opting for a smaller-screened device.

Overall we are pretty impressed with what the Acer Iconia A1-810 has to offer. Let’s be clear, this tablet is designed to offer great value for money and isn’t comparable to a lot of tablets on the market such as the iPad Mini in terms of specification because it’s around £100 cheaper. The main selling point of the Acer Iconia A1-810 is it’s price. At around £160 from Pixmania for the 16 GB version, we feel it offers excellent value for money as there isn’t much competition at this price point without compromising with 8 GB of capacity or a dated version of Android (or both). The RRP of the 8 GB version of the tablet is £150, but we couldn’t find it available for sale at the time of writing. At this price, we would be inclined to opt for the 16 GB anyway as a £10 premium for double the memory capacity is great value.

It may look like one, but the Acer A1 is no iPad Mini. For a lot of folk, though, that in itself is a benefit. Android buffs seeking an eight-inch tablet have few other choices than the A1, and the iPad Mini is obviously not among them. And, it has to be said, the Acer offers much better expansion and connectivity than the Apple product. It’s clearly less expensive to manufacture than the Mini, but then it costs a whole lot less too.

The budget Android tablet market is a brilliant arms race. The Acer Iconia A1 is right in the mix as one of the best tablets in terms of value for money. If you're looking for something to surf the web, use social networks and watch videos on the A1 merits consideration. The fact that it has a microSD card slot makes it a really attractive tablet for £149.

It may be low in price, but the Acer Iconia A3 feels cheap and has a mediocre screen. However, if you really want a 10in tablet for well under £200 than you'll be hard pushed to find much on offer. At this price you'll have to make sacrifices and the Iconia A3 isn't a bad tablet, although it's also worth considering the smarter-looking Lenovo Yoga Tablet 10, which has a great design but is saddled with an unusual Android interface. While you can still get the excellent Asus MemoPad FHD 10 for as little as £200 from Expansys.

The Acer Iconia B1-720 is a basic tablet, and it doesn't pretend to be anything else. However, you can get a significantly better tablet if you spend just a little more – from the Asus MeMo Pad HD 7 or an old Nexus 7 – making this something of an also-ran.

Pocket Windows II.

The Acer Iconia W4 is a huge improvement on its predecessor, largely thanks to the inclusion of an IPS screen and faster processor. It also narrowly beats the VivoTab Note 8 thanks to eMMC storage, improved battery life and additional video output. The Acer Iconia W4 certainly makes a better impression than Acer’s first attempt at an 8-inch Windows 8 tablet. While we prefer the look of the Dell Venue Pro 8, it’s a still a well-built tablet with a slightly slimmer and lighter body. The screen might not be class-leading, but it is a big improvement on the W3 and like its rivals, it has the capacity to keep you working throughout the day. The Acer Iconia W4 is another 8-inch Windows 8 tablet that offers a solid all-round performance, but the combination of full Windows on a small tablet still isn't one we'd recommend to everyone.

The Acer Iconia W4 is a good tablet, but so are all the other options in the 8-inch Windows 8 realm. If HDMI is an important feature, we’ve seen the 64GB model selling online for $300 (that’s $50 less than Toshiba’s Encore 8). If battery life is more important, Lenovo’s 64GB Miix 2 is selling online for about $329, and Dell’s 64GB Venue 8 Pro is also going for about $300.

The Acer Iconia W4-820-2466 is a vast improvement over last year's Acer Iconia W3, mainly due to a much nicer screen. However, Asus VivoTab Note 8 remains our Editors' Choice for entry-level Windows 8 slate tablets, as it includes more features, such as a pressure-sensitive digitizing stylus with built-in storage, GPS capabilities, an included carrying case, and a price tag that's $50 lower. The only thing the Iconia W4-820-2466 has over the Asus Note 8 is a large 64GB SSD, though the Asus tablet does have a microSD card slot for adding storage. If you don't think you'll ever need to take handwritten notes or draw on your tablet, the W4-820-2466 is a good alternative.

Good battery life should keep the Iconia W4 going through the working day, so long as you're not taxing it with over-strenuous workloads. With an external Bluetooth keyboard and mouse it could probably cope with more serious work than web browsing, email and light document editing/creation. However, as you ramp up the usage, you may find yourself squinting at the small screen and becoming hampered by limited storage capacity and processing power. The £208.33 (ex. VAT) Iconia W4 could be a useful adjunct to your workhorse notebook, but it's never going to replace it.

The Acer Iconia W4 is, first, a big improvement over the mediocre original W3 from 2013. Compared to other current Windows 8 tablets, it's thick, heavy, and a bit ugly, but if you can work with that, for a reasonably $299 it has a big 64GB SSD, all the requisite ports and connections, and most importantly, the best battery life in its category.

The Acer Iconia W4 is cheap enough to make Windows RT devices feel totally pointless. There's just no reason now to buy a Windows RT tablet and restrict yourself to the Modern UI and Windows Store apps. You might find yourself spending less and less time in the Windows desktop, but it's really good to know it's there, and that all familiar Windows software is just a few taps away.

Eight-inch Windows 8.1 tablets simply aren't a great proposition right now. If you're dead set on the platform and form factor, and waiting is not an option, it boils down to what compromises you're willing to make. Performance-wise we've seen pretty much the same from the trio of tablets tested. Overall Lenovo's Miix 2 8 would be our go to pick if it weren't for an annoying touchscreen responsiveness issue. Between the Encore and Iconia W4, Acer's tablet will save you $50, but Toshiba's uses a much better camera -- if that's important to you.

If you pick up the Acer Iconia W4 tomorrow, you're unlikely to be disappointed. It can perform a far wider range of tasks than your average iPad or Android tablet thanks to the inclusion of Windows 8.1 and the ability to install legacy Windows programs. However, you would be better off with one of the aforementioned platforms if you're looking for a more 'classic' app-driven tablet experience. If that's the case, a sharper screen and beefier processor can be found in Apple's iPad Mini with Retina.

Acer's Iconia W4 is a very capable Windows 8.1 tablet that packs a beautiful display into a sturdy frame. We also like that the Iconia W4 offers a micro HDMI port, which lets you easily share content on a big screen. However, while the W4 is sleeker than its predecessor, it's heftier than competing 8-inch Windows 8 slates.

So, is it worth a look? A lot will depend on what you think of Windows 8.1. If you're happy using it, and are after a cheap but relatively cheerful tablet with a decent camera bolted on, the Acer Iconia W4 is maybe worth a look. But a low-powered processor and underwhelming screen mean most of us will be better off elsewhere.

The Acer Iconia W4 is a huge improvement on its predecessor, largely thanks to the inclusion of an IPS screen and faster processor. It also narrowly bests the VivoTab Note 8 thanks to its faster eMMC storage, improved battery life and additional video output. At £250, it’s a good £50 cheaper, too. It might be lacking in premium appeal, but the Iconia W4 is one of the most promising Windows 8 tablets we’ve seen yet.

Set to go on sale in February for around £250-£260, the Acer W4 addresses some of the issues that blighted its predecessor, notably the sub-standard screen. However, it's not the massive jump up in quality we had hoped for. It does run nice and quick and makes a better first impression than the Toshiba Encore did so it's one of the better options to get that full Windows experience on a smaller slate. Whether the W4 is a better alternative to the iPad Mini 2 retina or the Nexus 7 is something we are not entirely convinced about so the search for a great portable Windows 8 tablet still goes on.

8-inches of metal. You're looking for an affordable tablet that is compact and stylish? Then you should look at Acer's Iconia A1-830 that wants to convince with a metal back and Intel Atom processor for a price of 170 Euros (~$233).

Like the Iconia A1 before it, the Acer Iconia A1-830’s price is good. However, unlike its predecessor, the A1-830 delivers passable performance and screen quality, plus a more solid build. In the overall scheme of things, the Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire HDX 7in are better-quality devices, with superior displays, quicker performance and longer battery life.

At a price of $249, it’s hard to see the A1 830 as good value, even if it does compete on price quite well with Apple’s own iPad Mini, which Acer is drawing heavy inspiration of. The problem is there are better options for a little bit more out there, and if you had to pick, we’d probably tell you to shell out that little extra or wait for this to drop even more before considering pulling out that wallet.

The Iconia improves on older Acer tablets with better build quality, and it's got enough power under the hood to handle day-to-day Android usage. The screen isn't good, though, and the lack of the latest Android software means this device misses out on a long list of features. The £140 price is tempting, though, and the Iconia is good enough to use on a daily basis - something we couldn't say about most budget Android tablets.

For $180, the Acer Iconia A1 is a solid Android tablet that could be good for kids or as your first budget tablet, but there are more options that can give you more bang for your buck in either price or features. The Nexus 7, Kindle Fire HDX, Tegra Note, and the Galaxy Tab 3 7-inch can be yours for just a few more greenbacks, so the A1 certainly isn’t an affordable tablet in a desolate space. Possibly the most interesting part of the Acer Iconia A1 is the fact that it ships with an Intel processor, but that’s just a curiosity that won’t impress those who are actually going to buy it.

For $179, the Iconia A1-830 is an affordable tablet that offers a fairly big screen for a low price. We also like the metal back, which gives this slate a sturdier feel than some other low-cost slates. Unfortunately, the somewhat dim screen and below-average battery life may give some pause.

Acer has really come out swinging with this device. Not unlike what Motorola did with the Moto G, here Acer creates a tablet that looks great and works great at its price point. At $180 USD, this device is ready to take on the rest of the market at that point without a doubt.

People expecting the Acer Iconia A1-830 to be a cheap iPad mini will likely be disappointed. It looks like an iPad mini, but the Android OS means it's nothing like an Apple tablet. It's also not particularly remarkable in terms of the specs it offers, thanks to a low-resolution screen and middleweight processor. However, it looks and feels pretty good for the price.

Seven times the charm. The time has come for Acer to update their Iconia One 7 budget tablet with new technology. The new machine once again runs on an Intel Atom processor, and the 7-inch IPS display offers HD resolution. Beyond that, the tablet also houses 8 GB of flash memory, a microSD slot and WLAN b/g/n. At a price of about 100 Euros (~$135), Acer's new Iconia One is a good deal.

A fairly average contender within the 7″ tablet category this. There were a few too many creaks from the chassis and it twisted all too easily – making the screen produce some strange colours. My main gripes are the sheer amount of apps pre-installed. Sure, I can understand one or two apps, but the entire Amazon suite? This isn’t a Kindle, why is it all here? And why do I need all the other additions too?

This is a 7inch Android Tablet, from the same range as the A1 I reviewed in June. This looks and feels quite different and I have not really worked out why the only thing I noticed – remember I am a man – is this this was black and the A1 was cream.

The Acer Iconia One 7 is a basic tablet that offers pretty good value given you can get one for as little as £90. If you can afford a bit more, the extra expense is worth it, but as a basic family tablet this is a decent buy.

There's no glaring flaw with the Acer Iconia One 7, and many of its shortcomings can be forgiven considering the low price. Still, the low-end Android market is as competitive as ever, and better, equally affordable options are in abundant supply. The Hisense Sero 7 Pro matches the One 7's price, but offers a better display, longer battery life, and HDMI out for mirroring media content on the big screen. The Nexus 7 is better still, but the $100 price gulf is substantial, especially in this price tier.

The $129 Acer Aspire One 7 provides a solid Android experience in an attractive and affordable package. However, to achieve this price, Acer cut some big corners, with a dull screen, subpar battery life and poor cameras. For $10 more, the ASUS MeMO Pad HD 7 offers a brighter, more colorful screen, superior cameras, much longer battery life and a slew of helpful software.

If you're in the market for a budget tablet you can share with children, I'm sorry to say it, but Acer has missed the mark with the Iconia One 7. Yes, the processor is speedy, but almost everything else I can think to say about the tablet is no better than average. The Tesco Hudl 2 may have an equally poor camera, but with a better and bigger screen, it's still the tablet of choice at this end of the market.

In the 7 inch budget tablet world, the Acer Iconia Tab 7 does nothing out of the ordinary or different than its competition. It just settles for identical specs of what other manufacturers have to offer and also suffers from many shortcomings. Acer could have tried for a slimmer build or matte back panel, but they haven’t. Acer has stuck to the orthodox and therefore missed a good opportunity.

Priced at Rs. 12,999, the Acer A1-713 is characterised by sluggish performance, a terrible screen and unexciting software. Those wanting a great tablet experience are bound to be disappointed. The only redeeming factor is its solid voice-calling capability. All things considered, we think the Asus Fonepad 7 Dual SIM (Review | Pictures), Flipkart Digiflip Pro XT712 (Review | Pictures) and HP Slate 7 are much better options. More importantly, they are cheaper. We might have been okay with this tablet if it had been priced below Rs. 10,000.

There is no doubt that the Acer Iconia Tab 8 has a lot to offer in terms of hardware and performance. The main advantages are the quad-core Intel Atom processor and the full high definition display. Additionally, the quality of the construction is also quite decent with an okay camera that is not designed for professional use but will adequately suit the needs of most users.

At $199, the Iconia Tab 8 looks, on paper, like it would be a decent deal for an 8-inch Android tablet. However, it doesn't last long enough on a charge, and the screen is too dim. While not as powerful, the Dell Venue 8 offers a brighter display and much longer battery life for the same price. If you can live with a lower-resolution screen, try the ASUS MeMO Pad 8, which lasts even longer on a charge.

It seems like you can't have it all when it comes to inexpensive full HD 8-inch tablets. The Acer Iconia Tab 8 has impressive multitasking performance for its $200 price, and its premium looks and feel sets it apart from the generic plastic exteriors that dress countless inexpensive tablets on the market. But we still recommend Dell's Venue 8 (2014)$149.99 at Dell for its better display and more reliable performance.

Acer's new more premium Iconia Tab 8 or A1-840 FHD tablet does bring a much better design and feel to their tablet lineup while carrying a very reasonable price. It is nice to see them upgrade the display and processor for a better experience and higher performance but it still falls a bit short from the competition.

Surfboard. Acer's Iconia Tab 8 W is an 8-inch Windows 8.1 tablet available for around 150 Euros (~$169). The tablet features the same hardware as the competition: a bright IPS screen, a Bay Trail processor, 1 GB of working memory, and 32 GB of storage capacity. Does the Iconia have a unique selling point at all?

The Iconia One 8 isn't as good value as the Tesco Hudl 2, but its Precision Plus touchscreen does give it a fun, extra feature to make it stand out. Its snappy internals are also great for its price, and its excellent build quality and wide range of colours give it more personality than other £150 tablets. If you're not fussed about its sketching capabilities and want a longer-lasting battery, though, the £150 Asus MeMO Pad 7 ME572C is a much better buy.

With a budget device like the Acer Iconia One 8, it all comes down to price. The UK pricing for the old version was £120, and the European pricing for this new version is €179, which puts it at around £130. For that price, you’re getting a fair cop from Acer. It runs Android 5.0 with ease, the touchscreen is receptive, there are two cameras, and you’re getting a HD display.

It’s the classic case of a low price tag absolving this tablet of its many flaws and weaknesses, but whilst it’s certainly not the worst slate on the market, there are better offerings that don’t require that you fork out hundreds more in cash; namely the 2013 Nexus 7 or the MeMO Pad 7, both from Asus.

It's true that I didn't expect much from a $130 tablet not that long ago. Times have changed. For just $50, I can pick up an OK tablet like the 7-inch Amazon Fire that does what I need it to do, albeit slowly. The Acer Iconia Tab 8 is faster and has a bigger HD screen, but with below-average battery life and poor cameras.

With its solid battery life and useful multitasking apps, the Acer Iconia One 10 tablet is a pretty good deal at only $150. However, it's not the speediest tablet in its class, and the audio doesn't sound great, even for a budget slate. For $30 more, we prefer the Lenovo Tab 2 A10 ($180), which offers better performance, 3 more hours of battery life, excellent sound and a brighter full-HD screen.

On features, the Acer Iconia One 8 beats the Lenovo and Samsung tablets by offering 16GB of storage, which you really need on an Android tablet. The Amazon Fire HD 8 is better for multimedia enjoyment and playback thanks to its screen coating and far better speakers, but if you want the rich array of third-party apps available in Google's store, the Iconia 8 gets you there. Our Editors' Choice for budget tablets, meanwhile, remains the Amazon Fire. The 7-inch Fire delivers most of the performance you get from these $99 tablets for half the price, it's just a bit smaller.

The Acer Iconia One 10 (2017) has entered the tablet ring with a great display and powerful speakers, making for a strong first impression. But with a budget chipset and average battery life, it doesn't do enough to be essential.

The respectable battery life of the Iconia One 10 B3-A30 is one of this bargain tablet’s biggest assets. The running time we saw was long enough to get through several states' worth of driving in many parts of the United States, or a day’s outing to Grandma’s and back—all while keeping the little ones entertained. That enticing battery life, coupled with the tablet’s solid, if unspectacular, build quality, make this a good, low-cost option for kids, cars, and secondary locations like a den or kitchen.

The Iconia One 10 goes up against various low-cost tablets in the $150 range from Asus, Lenovo, and RCA. For broad Android app usage, I prefer the Asus ZenPad Z300M, which has less onboard storage (16GB) but more RAM (2GB). The reason is that you can add storage with a microSD card (and even make it look like internal storage), but you can't do anything about a tablet's RAM, which caused various crashes and out-of-memory errors on the Iconia One 10. As I said at the beginning of this review, though, it's all about what you want to do with your tablet. The ZenPad and other options in this price range generally lack front-facing speakers. If you're looking to keep your kids occupied on a long car ride, the Iconia One 10 is a solid choice. If you don't mind a smaller screen, the 7-inch Amazon Fire$49.99 at Amazon is less than half the price and our Editors' Choice for low-cost tablets.

At the beginning of this review, I asked if the Acer Iconia Tab10 was worth its asking price to be a multimedia tool. If that is what you are buying this tablet for then yes it certainly is. The screen is nice and clear and the colours pop well. The sound is very good due to the four front-facing speakers and the DTS audio gives it some real “oompf”. Add in the fact that this has a very handy Kids Mode built in and this could very well be a great tablet for the upcoming holidays as a family tablet.

On the face of it, The Acer Iconia Tab 10 looks like a pretty good tablet then. I have been using the device for a few days now, mainly for its multimedia functionality. In this role, it is performing admirably. The battery will last long enough for at least two feature-length films with room to spare. There are some pretty neat little features that have been stacked on top of a relatively spartan installation of Android 6.0. One of these is the use of multi-finger inputs. For instance, when the screen is locked, you can use 5 fingers to unlock the screen and go to an app of your choice. This is a really nice touch when you’re using the tablet in conjunction with an HD TV via the inbuilt HDMI port.

The $80 Acer Iconia One 7 is an affordable multimedia tablet that tries to take on offerings from Amazon, but falls short. Despite its fairly nice screen and ability to download apps from Google Play, the One 7 is held back by lackluster performance. The Amazon Fire HD 8 has more RAM and better Wi-Fi range. The Amazon Fire 7, meanwhile, isn't much faster, but costs $30 less. Neither has access to Google Play, but both are better values overall.
